| The doom and gloom on here is unreal.
For me, rather stupidly I don't care when we play at home, as a supporter I do my damnedest to get there.
Why do we have to be the whiniest set of fans?
I completely agree with Jake's comment.
Either go and support the club or don't but don't come on here and whinge with a million reasons why you don't go.
I'm sure if the onfield product was good people wouldn't care when we play and those reasons why they don't go would disappear.
It's easier to make excuses not to go when we are as poor as we are.
I suppose that's the difference between supporters and fans.

The definition of a supporter is one who supports their team financially, the definition of a fan which is short for fanatic is one who actually goes to games whatever it takes. Some who come on the board whingeing and whining do neither so should not be classed as either. Put up or shut up is my response.

I'm not convinced it's as easy as that anymore. You're right in that, ultimately, a winning team is the best selling point any club could have, but we have been so average/poor for so long now that I think a sizable portion of ex-attendees would need more than a few wins to tempt them back.
It's now essentially seven years since we were last a decent proposition, seven years in which we have continued to go backwards year on year. That is a lot of downhill travel to turn around. For those people who, for whatever reason, are now choosing not to attend in person, I reckon it will take a period of sustained success to bring them back and that will not be easy given our current position.
The worst part is that we have dug this hole for ourselves, all of our own doing, without any help from outside sources. From a position of some strength to being a club merely making up the numbers. It will take an awful lot of hard graft to convince some people that we are once more a serious contender, and not just another brief flash in the pan.

| My opinion is, you have to regularly put money into the club to be a supporter, I know some struggle to afford passes, but the club often do great ticket deals and buying merchandise at Christmas etc helps.
Anyone who doesn't can call them self a supporter, but they (IMO) font have the right to critise the club if they don't contribute and help.

| Know we always see a dip during school holidays but quite clear crowds are down, ive also noticed passholders who rarely missed games are missing a few this season.
While we should still be above the 7.5k IMG threshold my understanding is IMG are going to review figures from stadium safety reports as thst confirms who is actually in the ground not passholders not attending, corporate freebies etc

| Quote ="ComeOnYouUll"I honestly don't know what the answer is with match days. The club have tried Saturday afternoons for a while now. I actually quite like them, although I get many don't. The problem with playing on a Sunday is that we'd regularly be giving a two day advantage to opposition by then playing away on the following Friday.
The match day has no real affect on attendances, it's all about form.
I do agree about all games being televised being a bad idea.'"
I have heard the SMC prefer Saturdays as it makes hiring staff easier, some of the staff work there as a 2nd job so if games are on different days they cant get the same people and then new staff need training.
Another thought on the staidum, should they shut the North stand section? I dont see the point in having a couple of hundred fans there when the South is now so empty.

| Despite the usual bit of vitriol one to another on here, (lets face ot it wouldn’t be this board without it ) this set off as a really interesting thread about something that is endemic across our game and from what I hear from loads of my FC pals is particularly relevant at our club. For me, we have a lot of fans at different places on the scale of ‘adoration' for their club. Whatever some say for me at least, going to every game home and away isn't the only 'badge' that dictates that you’re a true fan supporter or whatever for over the years we have all been through the wringer and again looking round the terraces its plain to see that days like today certainly focus the mind a bit about exactly what we are doing here.
Life is a moving feast and People relocate change their circumstances, get ill, and lose their incomes they might not attend, but they still passionately care for the club they and often generations of their family support. While others drift away for one reason or another and are amazed and I guess often bemused by how easy it is after decades to do other things rather than religiously treking around the north chasing a dream. Like it or not for many of those folks 27th August 2016 changed things forever maybe because that was the dream the holy grail or the gold at the end of their particular rainbow and on that sunny London afternoon it all became a reality. Generations and generations never saw it but we were the chosen ones and we did, we were all that afternoon supporters till we die but in reality for many what else was there to top that moment!!
I’ve learned that fandom for your club comes out in so many different ways. We are all on here (by and large) because we love our club, and I would never dream of setting a scale of behaviour that dictates who is a better fan or supporter than anyone else anyone who has the slightest inclination towards my club is a kindred spirit.
On a personal note for a minute, I’ve been to every final we have played in since 1960 had a pass for over 60 years written three books about the club, chaired the supporter’s group for 7 years spent 13 years week in week out writing a blog about them (with enough words to fill three bibles), yet now through family circumstances and changes in my health although I'm a season ticket holder and always will be, (so apparently I’m a supporter at least) I don't get to every game anymore and haven't been away for around three years. So, I’m not a fan then?
I’m not being billy big balls about all that but after my life changed, I'm still passionate about the club and I guess l always will be. There’s another guy who is now in hospital who probably won’t come out whose bed is surrounded by FC pictures and who idolises the club and hangs on every word on Radio Humberside in the Mail and on sky TV. he’s still paying for his pass but I won’t be telling him he’s not a fan anymore. You just can’t put people into nice tidy ‘niches because our circumstances and motivations are all so different yet we all love the club they are part of our lives they run through our families, our colleagues, our friends networks and indeed our very DNA and no one will take that away from us.
But as I said I’ve really enjoyed most of this thread and its certainly good to hear of folks feelings rationale’s and demeanours and how their love of the club or indeed their distancing themselves from it manifests itself. It’s our club it belongs to us all if we care and, if you like, really love them then were all stakeholders and fans and we will all in our separate ways continue to ‘support’ it. And should the day ever come when we have to rally round it to make it survive, just as we did in 1999, I’m sure we’ll all be there to do just that again.

Cracking post….i explained my reasons and got shot down so expect a bit of flack……things changed massively for me halfway through 2016 but I still managed to see the holy grail be achieved and I felt what else is there…people say the GF but I’m 58 and was brought up on the CCup and I cried that day…..My reason for stopping…I was selfish and had to choose and I had to choose my marriage and kids and never regretted it as I have done so much without saying we are coming bk early from weekend away, kids being poorly and going to matches…Fc is in my blood and heart but my love is my family…I still but the odd bit of merchandise and it hurts when we lose but will I go back..even with a successful team..doubt it as part of my life is over

That includes me today but it was by accident not design. I cycle to every home game from Sutton Park as I did today. I set off late as I like to get there as late as possible to avoid the pre-match entertainment. Tragically half way there I got a flat tyre. Massive dilemma, what do I do? I thought I'll chain my bike up and get the bus in to town and walk from station. Waited no buses so and I thought feck it and "bouled" my bike home and watched it on telly. I think I made the right decision.

| I've had health problems, my parents are unwell, I have a wife and kids and have been hit financially by covid and brexit. I still buy my pass and go to games though so unfortunately no sob story from me guys.
I did stop going to away games a few years back though because we invariably lost

| The amazing thing is that I got a puncture cycling to the last home game as well!! incredibly that's the first one I've ever had cycling to home games and I've done it for years. Fortunately I got it when I was already in town so apart from the ball-ache of "bouling" it back home I got to see the game. Good job I did it was a cracker. It's a bit odd it's almost as if my bike doesn't want me to go to the games!!
As you say luckily I avoided the "patriots" in town. Nothing says "we want our country back" more than smashing shop windows and looting it's contents... All filmed so lets hope they get their day in the dock.
Thanks for the inner tube offer mate but I've just ordered a stack of them from ebay with a puncture resistant tyre as well!!
