Are you serious?
Everybody I know who's gone on to higher education has had a job.
30 hrs a week? Fuck me I'm surprised he can get to the rl he should be in bed.

Nobody, including you, has given any reason as to why students shouldn't get a subsidy on season passes, considering they can't work a full time job due to college/Uni commitments.
Again, people want to punish people that want to better themselves. And again people who haven't even been to Uni wish to pass judgement on every single student. Pathetic.

| Quote ="Hutchie"That is complete bollox. There are people with quals as long as your arms working in industries that they shouldnt be in , just because of the way the whole jobs market works and many other factors. Some people come out of work and have to grab any job they can, then get stuck on the treadmill and can never find a way off.
You then also get a whole bunch of graduates who get the degrees but cant handle the jobs they go into.
[uAnd what percentage of grads go into the health sector?? probably a very low one[/u'"
NHS is the 4th highest employer in the world..(Chinese Army, Indian Railway, Walmart are the ones above). Nurses have had to be University educated for several years most going to University to do a diploma, from 2015 nurses have to have a degree, answering your question how many grads go into health sector, if you take a University which has a health school (Hull for example) there will be approximatley 300 graduates studying nursing each cohort, no other degree course has anywhere near these figures, plus medical students find it difficult to find part-time work to subsidise their money as they spend 50% of their time on placement working long hours without pay.So I would say a very high percentage of grads go into healthcare.

| Always amuses me when people talk of 'having to do a job they don't like to support a family' etc, as if they had no choice about having children in the first place.
Fair play to MM for furthering her education, whatever people say, degrees are no walk in the park and if she's in a position to do another one then good luck to her!

Thanks Gary....I did my first degree whilst I worked full-time and had all 3 of my children to support, plus I paid for it with no subsidy, I managed to do my first degree whilst working full time as I would get up for work at 4.30am and work until 13.00, I also did that degree over 5 yrs, so it was a long hard slog! As this degree is if funded by the NHS I do not have to pay, however I walked away from a 23k a year job so saving a few quid on a season pass will help, although 2 of my children are now independent we support our youngest through college and we will also support him through Uni...Hubby will be stressed the year after next when he has 2 of us at Uni to support

Who said anything about a ft job? Mine was a response to someone who's kid didn't qualify for a discount anymore.
A season pass/beer/holidays/designer clothes are luxury items, if you want one earn more money or spend less on other luxaries.
I don't even think students 'should' get a discount but can see why they do.
And sorry about the late response I was at uni after a hard days work, but as I'm a international student not only do I not get subsidies I have tuition fees that have to be paid up front! So un fair, boo hoo.

It's that easy to get a job for a student is it? I went to Uni in Leeds were there are over 80,000 students. Surprisingly, there are not that many job vacancies.

Then cut your cloth accordingly.
If you can't work or can't get big enough loans you can't afford to do everything you want.
Amazingly everybody I knew who went to Leeds found adequate work, must be the sign of the times.

It wasn't a problem for myself, I worked on bars for my 3 years I was at Uni. But to say 'get a job then' is either ignorant or stupid.

If a person needs more money to afford a luxury item what else would you suggest? Sell a kidney?

Still cant just go and 'get a job', so was a ridiculous thing to say. And it's not even about luxuries, it's about living costs as well. If students can't get a job how else can they get their money? I agree that many students have it far too easy in the money department, but this is far from the case for many others who really do struggle. Especially post-grad students who get little or no support.

Isn't that the point of the subsidy? To make it easier for students to attend who can't afford a full pass!
Just out of interest, how much do you think a student gets? Or how many hours do you think a student attends Uni? Then how many hours should they work on top of that? And how much do you think that will realistically pay?
It's a shame the government don't think students should just 'get a job', they'd be entitled to Jobseekers allowance while they searched.

As for getting a job,if you know anything of this area nowadays you should realize there aren't any jobs.

| Got to say I kind of agree with Sheldon here...
I'm all for people furthering their education but that is the choice they are making. Student seem to get everything a the working class expense.
Without going into the ins and outs of student life I think it comes down to: "If I can't afford it, I can't have it"
I've had 3 pay cuts in 18 months and have had to cut back on alot but have so far managed to keep buying my pass. If it gets to the point were I cannot afford it, will the club give me a discounted price?? I think not!!

Tuition fees are now £9000 per year, plus a maintenance LOAN of up to £5000. All repayable with interest.
Now, lets compare that to somebody who decided not to go into further education and went to work in a factory, earning minimum wage, who will be able to claim Housing/Council tax benefit 'subsidy' plus they can claim working tax credit if earning under £16,000 and when they then have there tribe of kids is entitled to child benefit and working tax credit.
Now, who's the leach on the state?

More than likely the student who goes onto benefits after his course finishes because he can't find a job

BOTH!!
You get a loan to cover all of those fees which you don't pay back until you are earning a healthy wage and even then it is technically interest free, just covers inflation does it not. Nothing to stop them getting a job which only pays £20k p/a and the don't repay a penny. Or if they do get a well paid job and then lose for any reason thay, again, don't repay...
My loan which I have must be paid back no matter what, If i can't pay it it goes against my credit file and affects my credit rating and I still have to pay full price for everything. Students get a much easier life.
And to compare it to a benefit cheat is a little laughable. I've never claimed a single benifit in my full adult life, i've always paid in full for everything and just struggle along like everyone else when times are hard.. Maybe i'll just quit my job, declare bankruptcy and let the public foot the bill on my oustanding debts and living allowances!!

Your argument doesn't make sense, why would you go through uni to just accept £20k per year?
So now they shouldn't even get a loan from the government for their tuition fees? Maybe Ocean finance then eh? Silly argument.
Who mentioned anything about benefit cheats? I'm saying there's a lot of help available to low income families that aren't to students, to 'subsidise' them.
Oh and congratulations on never having claimed a benefit.
