But that beneficiary puts themselves in the position to be beneficiary by choice somewhere along the line. Things do happen which may be out of a person's control at a given point in time but the concept of luck is laughable

Well, not really because that is the whole concept of luck - it's not a concept which says there is no reason for a set of events to occur, it's the concept that an unlikely event occurs outside of ones control. To be lucky does not indicate some magic occurred which defies the laws of physics. For example I once found a tenner on the floor as I was walking down the street - yes I had decided to walk down the street and yes there was some reason that the note was there (another persons actions and some complicated formula of the motions due to the wind/weather etc), but ive walked down lots of streets in my life, lots of people have lost money before, but only once have events conspired for me to have found the money on that occasion.
I understand where you are coming from but it depends on how you define the concept of luck. It is not a mystical force which makes things happen at random junctures - I agree with causality and that nothing happens without a preceding event, but 'luck' is simply a matter of probability where the improbable happens, and although is technically possible it is highly unlikely.

That does not have to mean ‘luck’ or randomness exists.
It may be seen as luck and randomness, simply because it is way beyond man’s inability to understand and/or explain.

There then must be at least two actions for there to be a beneficiary.
You might not be able to control action 'a' but you may be able to predict action 'a'
You can control action 'b', so then the consequence for the beneficiary would be different.

What you're describing is purely an unlikely event happening. No matter how unlikely the event, if you are put in the scenario enough times then it will happen. it's probability, not luck. If it is probable that something may happen, no matter how low that probability is, then how can it possibly be luck when it does? it's just a possible outcome happening

It's quite a simple concept. Every decision we make, either consciously or subconsciously has a number of potential outcomes. Sometimes a small number which is easy for people to understand, or possibly a near infinite number, which is a more difficult thing to get your head around.
The fact is that if you do something which has even a tiny chance of happening (say 1 in a billion), then it may still happen and no matter how improbable that outcome is then when it happens it has nothing to do with luck, but is merely an improbable event occuring

| What seems to be confusing people is the definition of luck and it's relation to probability.
I am in no way suggesting that luck replaces mathematical probability and if you're arguing against a belief in luck as a force which makes thing happen then I am on your side because that's simply not true.
However in the context of luck simply being an expression of an occurrence of an unlikely event or sequence of events then it is certainly valid and someone encountering an improbable event can be classed as lucky (or unlucky) to have encountered them.
If it makes you feel nice superior then feel free to replace the phrase "luck" with "having an unlikely even out of their control benefit/hamper them" if you like, it's up to you but I'll keep using the abbreviated term in common usage, safe in the knowledge that I understand the luck fairy had nothing to do with the extreme edges of the normal distribution curve
