Putting covers on the pitch would not have made it playable.

Its been sub zero during the day and dropping to near double digit sub zero at night.
At that sort of temperatures even under soil heating would be having a job to keep a pitch playable.

The real issue is why are the RFL starting the season at the beginning of February, when there is a good chance that weather will be as bad as it has been.
The season should be kicking off no earlier than March and finishing no later than the back end of October.
Unfortunately the RFL sticks in silly fixtures like the magic Magic weekend and the Exiles game, necessitating the need to start the season in the first week of February.

Starting early has pretty much wrecked Saints pitch, parts of it have been burnt due to the air blowers needed to keep the game on. I'm sure if Saints knew Summer rugby would be reverting to a Winter start we would have installed under soil heating, however if its supposed to be a summer game you should not need such fancy bits of kit.

the catalan club watered the pitch and failed to cover the pith! conspiracy theories will come into it! more could and should have been done!

I know it's harsh on the travelling fans, but realistically there are championship football matches that have been called off - and they have undersoil heating, more money to spend on sorting their pitch out etc.

Completely agree. It's madness starting the season in early February. It's a so called summer sport yet Hull play a third of our home games before the end of March.

I just feel so sorry for the fans who have travelled, it wouldnt be so bad if the weather was Ok of course. But then the game would be on!

Personally I think Hull FC should at least complain about the circumstances around the cancellation. Watering the pitch before freezing conditions? Not good at all.

Doesnt matter if it was called off at 2pm or 2pm last week. You can't get your money. And who is going to refund. I guess Catalan have no need normally for pitch covers and wont have access to any. Loads of footie matches in France have been called off and even tonight kick-a-thon is still in doubt.

If this is the case then they shouldn't be in SL.

Word on another thread is Hull fans are being offered free tickets to St Esteve v Montpellier. Scant consolation but a nice gesture from those responsible (Catalans Tours I believe).

it was -10 in Hull last night and -2 now with 4 inch's of snow on the ground.It has not stopped Hull City playing today and it never stopped Hull's game against Warrington last weekend in similar weather conditions.If clubs put the effort in to get a game on then there is always a chance to get the game on.It seems Catalan never even tried to get the game on.

Why would I have gone to freezing France for a weekend? It's been colder there then it has here.

Why are people so surprised its been called off today? In what way is it different to any number of football games called off? If anything they maybe knew it was going to be off yesterday but may as well have made a late call - or are we claiming that hundreds of the fans over there only made travel plans yesterday? As far as I am aware nobody was going to get money back on flights I doubt insurance covers cancelled rugby games. Hopefully they are not acting like typical moaning Brits abroad with nobody to blame but the weather and make something of the time they have down there.

You must be loaded if you can just write off several hundred quid with nothing to show for it.

But like you say, it's already paid and you can't get it back. So what matters if you go or not? Try telling some of the fans who went this weekend before they departed that the match wasn't going to be on, I'm not so sure all would have been willing to go. And I guarantee some of the fans there will just wish they were home now and not having to go through all the travel back for nothing. If anything you save money by staying, by not buying food/beer etc.

its more like dissapointment and anger, money wasted if you are here for 3 days, we fly home monday night so we are planning a trip up the pyrenees on the train

Someone else had said anger etc. Feel for you but good luck sounds like you are at least making something of it - the skiing and snowboarding is pretty good in that area if anyone is into that.
