It ain't talking about the opinions of the forum posters, I'm talking about the attendance figure increase since moving to Friday rugby despite been in a recession and with poor forum on the field.
We moved to exclusively Friday night games for the 2009 season and saw an average increase of 1,104 fans, the year after a further 345. The year before we lost on average 385 from the year before, we had gained 1,569 before that but we were also in a Grand Final in 2006. Personally, I don't think it is a huge leap to draw a clear line between those figures and move to Fridays - not least since we were not exactly playing show piece RL at the time.
This year attendances have dropped a shocking 1,798 on average apparently (according to SLStats.org), but personally I think that is due to people have less money and the Rugby League we've been playing been frankly dull over a long period of time.

I don't think the very poor form and performances at the start of the season helped the attendances.
In any event we didn't have any Friday home games between April 22 (Rovers) and July 8 (Salford).

| Sunday rugby is b*llocks, why people keep banging on about it I don't know. Atmosphere is worse and work the next day, hope they never bring them back. Shame Cas and Bratfut have changed to Sundays as those nights always used to be good crack.

I think that's more to do with what's (not) happening on the pitch; I've been going for 30 years and I have found it harder and harder to get myself motivated to go to the game, never mind actually singing or chanting.
Fridays for me, it leaves the weekend free for me to do what I/we like.

| Just to be consistent I will say the sooner game day is back to Sunday the better. Weekends are c rap when we have been beaten. I only have so much cash to spend so all this talk of it leaving the weekend free to be with family etc is b olloxs as rugby is my choice of leisure with the family as it was for my parents and I can't afford to take family to both every other week. It also does exclude kids from going in a lot of cases school night or not. I also feel Friday nights restrict the match day experience. If done correctly we could generate a great experience utilising the Park and the ground facilities similar to in Australia if we played at 3pm on a sunday. The day could build from mid morning onwards. The SMC would be pleased as additional sales would come in etc. There are massive opportunities which cannot be explored at 7pm on a Friday night.
The players rest argument is b olloxs. If you actually go through the fixtures there is enough variation in the playing dates to show this actually balances out. It was an argument used at the time of the change which does not stand up to scrutiny.
The away support is diminished on a Friday night and also it restricts the home support to a parochial crowd who are simply local at the exclusion of those who have flown the nest as it where.
I appreciate it doesn't work for all, but a mix would be far better as it was thus allowing everyone to be included. I do suspect though that it will stay the same as Jimmy will always fall back on his scientific survey.

How many people do you think will be up for getting to West Park at mid morning on a Sunday?
Summer era crowds on Sundays have generally speaking been below that of Friday games. People have far more things to do on a Sunday than, say, twenty years ago.
Personally I'd go anyway regardless of the day but I maintain that Fridays are more popular. The posts on here back that up as does the fact that Wigan and Leeds choose to play on Fridays and I imagine Saints will also do so next season.
I sympathise with people like yourself and Kosh who live away and cannot get to the KC on Fridays but I guess you cannot please everyone all the time.

| Sunday please,
Chance of a bigger 'Away fan' attendance, creates more of a 'buzz'.
Always seemed to have a bit more atmosphere as well, or was that because the team were performing better then?

| For all Rugby League fans it's simple. Super League is generally broadcast on Friday and Saturday evenings. Being a Rugby League fan, I like to watch these games, preferably live. There is generally no Rugby League broadcast on a Sunday.
Whatever merits playing on a Friday night has, and I agree there are some, it doesn't compensate for having to miss the live game. Especially when all the big mouths around you can't keep the result to themselves.

The last season we played predominantly on a Sunday was 2005 when our average was 10,639 and there were five Sunday attendances below 10,000. The two highest crowds that season were both Friday night games live on Sky.
I don't recall many sides bringing big away followings on a Sunday.

| There are so many contraditions on this thread its astounding.
Some want it to me more intimidating for the opposition, some want more away fans for the buzz?
Isn't it up to the home fans to create a bit of noise to intimidate the opposition? Please no one mention the bad old days of the Boulevard when the oppistion were effectively attacked with coins / spital.
Leeds and Wigan, who have the highest average attendances have played their games on Fridays for years.
Now Pearson is on board and the corporate sponsorship should get a shot in the arm with his commercial background, they prefer Fridays for taking their client to the games.
If their has to be a compromise, then the Catalans, Quins and Crusaders games could be played on Sunday as their travelling support has the furthest to come.

The only drawback there being if each of those clubs brought their fans combined they still would not fill a quarter of the North Stand.

Firstly I don't need your sympathy.
Next. Its insular thinking which holds businesses back. West Park has massive potential for attracting new fans and old. Look what happened at the derby match this year. So yes with imagination you can attract people to a park. We have corporate sponsors who can assist, a very supportive city council and a thriving amateur league who may help as well. Broaden your mind. BBQs and hog roasts etc and outside bars and before you know it you attract many people. All in nice environment which might actual assist the local community as well. You certainly can't do that on Friday nights. Give people a "match day experience" to remember aside from a crappy pre match cover versions only singer, a bouncy castle for two people and a short video on a small screen. We have been asked about the "experience" in questioners so the club are interested in developing it but they certainly fail to deliver it. It might just mask a losing team if the whole experience was worth while and family orientated.
I am also sure that Sky (I speak generally like you) would rather have all RL fans watching games live as it adds to sponsorship. If we all played Friday nights viewing figures (live) will suffer.
I would also add that Salford have always played Friday night just by way of a counter balance to you with Leeds (central to most clubs and easier to get to on Friday night) and Wigan.
Finally what additional things do people have to do on a Sunday that they didn't 20 yrs ago. I am certainly struggling with that one. Certainly nothing that relegates rugby (leisure activity) to Friday nights for a couple of hours.
I know I am a minority voice on here but I suspect that its easier to have an attitude of "I can't be arrised to go" when the club is in a rut like now, when you have to rush to get to a game on a Friday night after a days work. Hence the REDUCTION in crowds this season. Please don't quote 2005 and the crowds then as that was the start of us believing we might actually develop our potential, thus crowds improved. The struggle will be convincing folk to come back now and I strongly feel that a complete match day experience package might make it easier.

the reduction in crowds isn't anything to do with the day the game is played, it's hte product on the pitch and the cost of attendance.
You say have games on a Sunday, corporates don't like that, it's better for them to have ameeting late Friday afternoon and then go on to the KC for a meal and an evening of Rugby.
You make reference to a hog roast, outside bars etc, but you don't factor in the cost of doing such things, you may put 1 or 2 thousand on the gate, but at what cost.
IF the product on the field gets sorted out then the attendance will recover, I've chosen a number of times not to leave work early and get myself to Hull (from Birmingham), simply because I know I wont be entertained, if I felt it was worth my while then I would start work (or finish) and hour earlier from Monday to Thursday and be perfectly able to leave work at 3pm to get to Hull for 6:30pm, as it is, I'd rather work until 4pm on Friday and have Monday off work, giving me a 3 day weekend every other week.
