| Quote ="Airlie the Cat"Cookey says that Agar is 'one of the best coaches he ever played under'. Bizarre really since he only played under him when he was the assistant coach.[u I also don't buy all this stuff about the board not backing him. Ask Peter Sharp if he had that kind of backing and four years to try and get the job done!'"
It is true, although the board brought in the likes of players you mention, Agar targeted other players and the board refused, believe it or not Agar worked on a tight budget for a club our size.

| Dear Paul Cooke - I have just been on Leeds Forum and they are even quoting Richard Agars abysmal record. Get over your self -Hull Supporters have as much opinion as you have. Next weeks instalment should tell us how long your old buddies were going to carry on before we saw something to excite us. Let the good times roll.

| One thing does appear to be consistent, though, the players - past and present - unanimously seem to give him great raps. Even Briscoe's article in the Mail tonight lauded Agar and - to my eyes - seemed a bit sniffy about "the new coach":
Quote ="The Mail"Preparing to make his mark on the play-offs, Briscoe's selection to the Dream Team came on the day Hull officially announced Peter Gentle as Agar's successor.
Having been brought to the Black and Whites by Agar and handed his debut by the soon-to-be Wakefield coach, Briscoe took the opportunity to thank Agar for his part in his rise from junior to Dream Team player.
"Rich Agar gave me my Super League chance and I cannot praise him highly enough for what he has done for me," explained Briscoe.
"Personally, I don't know much about the new coach coming in, but that's next year. We'll see in pre-season what he wants, but that's next year and this year we have plenty to play for and focus on."'"
As for Crooke - the audacity! Claiming McRae had a cheek by being in the stands at Friday's match and taking notes!!!

| Hands tied behind his back by the old regime? The same regime that oversaw coaches finishing 7th, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 3rd, 5th, 2nd and 4th in the 8 full seasons before he took over. Winning a challenge cup and appearing in a Grand Final.
Also, if the board were messing him about regarding recruitment and retention it only shows weakness on his part and adds credence to the notion he's a yes man tbh.

to be fair you very rarely see a current player slag his current coach, even former players seem to operate a code of conduct of respect for thier former coach. for example i can't even remember too many players current or ex slagging walsh at the time and he was garbage

True. But you can tell if they didn't rate their former coaches by their dignified silence. In Agar's case, everyone who has spoken has spoken for him. I truly wonder what they see with all the evidence against.

| Sorry lads maybe got carried away with the "hilt" comment but at least 8,000 of us bought passes and believed things would improve (which they did last season). He had every chance, but for me lacked motivational skills.

Last straw for me with Agar was the MM game against Quins in 2010, strangely the time when Expro/Icecreamman showed up.

| I remember going to Caravan Park after Saints at Wembley and i know we were suffering from the cup loss but the team were awful that day and totally unmotivated, the rot started to set in then for me. But still no unrest or boos till around a couple of seasons later, so for Cooke to say we never backed him is not true.

| If Cooke ever wants to get back into the game in some capacity, it's a fair bit more likely at Wakey with Agar than FC with Pearson. His stated opinion is therefore unsurprising.
Briscoe's effectively had his rugby league "dad" move out. Not surprising he's a bit unimpressed.

I don't think it's that,at least not with the bulk of them. They'll have been comfortable with Agar in all aspects of their day to day life, for a new boss to come in takes you out of that comfort zone and you're heading into the unknown. I think it's human nature to be apprehensive about that. The ones who don't want to put the effort in and carry on taking it easy will be shown the door, those that want it and embrace it will go from strength to strength. Once they build up some trust and the players start enjoying doing different things and learning via new methods i think a few of those that have only ever worked with Agar will see him for what he is.

Not necessarily. Can't think that Ogre, for instance, has that kind of mentality.
Agar has been at the club for a long time and many of these player have known him for either his entire tenure or for theirs. Players like continuity and stability. Coupled to his general popularity and reported ability as a [icoach[/i it's no real surprise that there's a degree of upset/trepidation about the change. They will also be focussed on what remains of this season and not thinking ahead to next just yet.
Let's see what their reaction is once Agar has left and Gentle is actually here. That will tell us a lot more about whether they'll embrace the opportunity or waste time looking backwards.

| It really grinds my gears when I here this Agar's been hard done too bull$hit. It's a results based business and since he's been head coach the results have been poor to say the least. You can't say he hasn't had the chance to turn it around when he took over in 2007 and here we are in 2011 just about getting in the 8. Time for him to go along with anybody else who's willing to accept mediocrity.
