Just talking to a mate and he reckons we couldn't afford him.

So he reckons Myler is on more than Berrigan was? Is he a dobbin by any chance?

As for players - Obst and as a couple of other posters have mentioned Sammut may fit the bill.
Whether they are available I can't say , but both the clubs involved may look favourably on receiving a transfer fee.'"
Fair enough. Would be OK with either. Obst generally has a really good game against us and Sammut is an off-the-cuff player that would be entertaining at worst. Would be aiming higher if it's just one player we're targetting, but sounds to me like Phelps + a cheapish HB cover from wherever we can find one.

If we sign Phelps Tansey will be half back/hooker cover.

I'm obviously hoping 'you' stuff this up.
But Phelps (still only 25, can play 1-5) and somebody like Gareth Moore as an extra body now and a (genuine medium-term) project, would be adequate.
Tansey'd get the hooker-utility role.

No he's not a dobbin he just took into account that behind Tomkins myler is probably one of the hottest prospects in the country and a full england international, but FWIW i don't think he'd be on anything near berrigans wage either.

Maybe. Still a genuine quality centre short, but that's been the case for 3 seasons now.

My concern with him is attitude. For all he's in the last chance saloon (again), he knows we're short of numbers. Hope he doesn't take the pi$$.

| We were very close to getting Ben Jones-Bishop in on a season long loan deal not too long after the 2010 season ended. Maybe that'll happen now, putting Jones-Bishop to full-back and Tansey into the half-back equation.
I'd still go for one of Moore/Briggs too.

Was named in a very strong Leeds line-up against Wakey. I reckon the new cheese at Leeds has plans for him to be in and around their 17 next season. If they are loaning out I would expect it to be Hardaker.

| The problem we have is that, even if we're willing to pay a fee, we would ideally only want someone for 12 months. This makes paying a fee a silly idea.
Also, any "free agents" or players available would be aware of our situation and would maybe stay where they are, knowing that after a year they're binned.
We need someone who is not first choice, probably entering the last year of their current deal and wants to put themselves in the shop window. I can't think of any such player off hand, and would they be good enough anyway?
All points to either a couple of loan signing or taking a gamble on an NL 1 player, or one of each. Which, to me anyway, sets the mind set of a "stop gap" year.

Think I read he was named in the squad for Wakey with a likely debut on the wing. I could be way off, though.

| it sounds like the club have known about berro's position for quite a while, and surely they would have made provisions? someone like leuluai would be perfect,as he can play 7 or 9,and if we bring in a 7 for 2012,he could still cover that position,as well as rotating with houghton.

| Quote ="east hull FC fan" even if we're willing to pay a fee, we would ideally only want someone for 12 months. '"
Why? The quicker Hull fans forget about this ridiculous idea and obsession with bringing in a stop gap halfback and then signing a world class or one of the very best halfbacks in the NRL a year later the better, it wont happen, we have said the same every year since 2003 and Stacey Jones. I know thats maybe not what your getting at but I have seen it a few times on this board, The NRLs best 7s as a rule stay there because they can still command the wages, until they are past there past there best at least, the closest thing to a top class aussie halfback coming over in his prime in recent years is Monaghan, who is on a ridiculous contract and he couldnt get a game at 7 at Manly anyways. Even in the unlikely event that Thurston or Cronk etc headed to SL what would stop Warrington outbidding us.
For me the sensible approach would be to go for a quality mid to long term halfback, if not quite world class, the likes of Rovers signing Dobson, Crusaders signing Samutt and Quins signing Leuluai originally shows that these players are around on the fringes of the NRL if you look hard enough, I also remember Peter Sharp trying to sign Jamie Soward when he couldnt get a game at the Roosters what a signing that would have been. The other option would be players playing at SL level for smaller clubs, Hudds made a shrewd move buying Brough as did Wigan signing Leuluai. I know we have other weak areas for 2011 like in the centres, but Berrigans wages could easily be spent on a good halfback option, and if one became available we would be stupid to turn down the opportunity to sort this position were we have struggled for years.
