| I thought getting rid of Sharpy was a mistake we made a GF and 4th place year after 2 games from another GF and for me it has got a lot worse under Agar.
We had no halves last season due to injury and 2007 we had a half-fit at best Matty Head who did a decent job considering and as we saw having no halves has a massive effect on the team couple that with a lot of other injuries.
Yes he did play a saftey first game a fair amount of the time but we were struggling for numbers in the backs our strength and experience was in the forwards.
We lost at Rovers by 1 Saints by 1 drew with Catalans which we nearly scored on the hooter thats a 5 point swing a bit of luck and we'd have won those games which at the time may have had us in the play-offs IIRC with an injury depelted team.
His signings were ok Berrigan,Cusack,Byrne,Tickle ok there was Hutch the least said the better and Dykes was just unfortunate and depending what you want to believe the board didnt back him with his targets true or not I dont know.
A lot worse under Agar than Sharp for me worse rugby, tatics, the use of interchanges a joke.
The Craig Hall situation is disgusting bringing Broughton in on loan and leaving him out ok if we've got knowone else ok bring him in but we've got Hall.Shapry gave the kid confidence and he was doing well since Agar has come in how far has he gone backwards talk about outsatnding manmanagement

Think you are being unfair to Sharp....Proved what he could do with a bloody good squad then was let down by players leaving, being released and just leaving to fill a childhood dream(and his pockets)...his signings were poor but he put a lot of emphasis on youth as well....look how that has gone down the pan since he has gone.

| Quote ="Kosh"His tactics were far better than Agar's - particularly when we actually had any halfbacks on the pitch. His main fault was an over-emphasis on defence and safety which was more like the way they used to play in the NRL than today's SL.'"
Indeed, he had a very basic approach which had a big emphasis on completing sets, it didnt really work out and was the start of the terrible rugby we see today, but he managed to get much better results out of it.
The biggest factor to contribute to Sharps downfall was losing Cooke, he paid the price for the team being so realiant on one one player for three years, which has still be sorted in my opinion becuase I dont expect Long to get the amount of assists that Cooke did.

couldnt of put it better myself, what amazes me is that agar has lost control of the current team and the board hasnt give him the chop, where as i feel kear and sharpy did less to lose there jobs, that said i think thats why he hasnt had the chop because the board has paniced before and it hasnt got them anywhere

Whats even more amazing is that the board saw it fit to be very ruthless with Sharp and Kear, yet they appoint a man who should have had a big influence and impact on both regimes what they deemed a failure, and have seemed to have given him there full backing regardless of results and performances.

Just as a matter of interest, who would these be?
Tickle?
Berrigan?
Manu?
Or perhaps you are referring to the development of Tom Briscoe?
Most of Hull FC's deadwood has been at Hull FC for many years, long before Peter Sharp turned up.
I can't understand why people thought Sharp was a poor coach. As has been mentioned, he turned a mis-firing squad in 2006 into Grand Finalists.
He was hindered by things beyond his control (Like Plummer etal, not getting Cooke to sign on the dotted line). It was Sharp who rescued 2007 with the signing of Matt Head. Does anyone really think that there will be a mid season signing to use the Croker cap money this season? I very much doubt Agar has the contacts that Sharp had.
2008 was virtually over before it becan due to injury, which is hardly Sharps fault. But yet more board room blunders made Sharps job harder (not offering the right contract to Shaun Briscoe has to go down as one of the biggest cock ups in RL let alone just for Hull FC).
Sharp was a typical Aussie coach. He got the best out of what he had to work with (which at times was threadbare) by playing percentage rugby. It aint pretty to watch but with a full fit squad its effective. Its no different to what Nathan Brown is doing at Huddersfield.
It does make me chuckle when some fans cry out of free flowing, harlem globtrotter rugby. It proves they have only been about for the past 6-7 years. Hull FC were never renowned for expansive play. With the exception of a couple of small periods of time, Hull FC were known for having a domineering pack which beat the opposition into submission.
In short, the board were far too trigger happy to get rid of Sharp, when their replacement has done more to damage the chances of us competing in a much shorter space of time.

Correct - but in fairness to the Board many 'experts' on here were putting pressure on them to act. Better coach than Agar without doubt.

| I believe agar deserved his chance at the job. He had served his apprenticeship under previous coaches, so its only fair hes getting a crack. who else could we have attracted to the job anyway that would have been any better than we had with sharp? We can only judge agar fairly once hes assembled his own team.

I knew someone would come back with that one
It was a good pack but certainly wasn't head and shoulders above anyone else at the time. More to do with having a world class coach who got the best out of his players and made the most of opposition weaknesses.
We also had a great 1/2 back pairing to run the show

Then maybe someone should send a video of the team from around 1989 to 1991. How one coach can turn a group of average players into full international trophy winning players.

Early 80's pack with Skerritt, Stone, Rose and Crooks used to bully the opposition.
As mentioned, Dannett, Harrison, Jackson, 89-91
Early 2000's With Felcsh (spelling) Mahar, King (before he became too emotionally attached to a bar), Grimaldi, Jason Smith.

Oh for a Grimaldi now!!!!
Even in thre disasterous 70's we had Mick Harrison and a few others who really got stuck into the opposition and win or lose theoppositions pack came off really knowing they had been in a game, not now though!
