6:42 - what a gateway to sustained success that was

To be fair, in relative terms, it was. The next year we had our highest finish since 1987. The year after that our best since being champions in 1985. The year after that we won a first top-flight play-off since... well I suppose it depends whether you count the old Premiership or not, but for a long time, either way.

Although things started to drift after that, coming in 8th-10th isn’t that bad compared to what Rovers fans have faced in the past. Excluding the War League, we didn’t finish higher than 12th between 1931 and 1961. We only finished above 8th twice in the 60s, and were relegated in 1974. They were mostly bigger leagues, so we were still sometimes winning a reasonable proportion of games, admittedly.

Basically, between golden eras in the mid-1920s and the late-1970s to mid-1980s, it was more rain than sun. With the occasional Yorkshire Cup along the way. And then there was the tumult of the 90s, with the two likely paths seeming to be managed decline and catastrophic decline.

Compared to most of that, I think 6-42 was one signal of the start of a little silver era.

The six consecutive derby wins is a small but rather lovely cherry on the icing on the cake.

Exactly - this is, in absolute terms, a historically good time to be a Hull fan. I’m sure a fan of Leeds, Saints or Wigan might arch a brow at ‘supremely’, when you are still using a final you lost 12 years ago to proclaim the wonder of it all, but they are your successes and they are beautiful to you. Similarly, your put downs don’t diminish our own fond memories.

Snide backhanded praise aside, I know people complain about the faults of Super League, and even Eddie has stopped saying it just keeps on getting better every year, but it is a much more even competition now than in its first decade. Fair enough Leeds seem to win the Grand Final more often than not, but Hull and Wire’s cup wins, and Wire, Hudds and Cas winning the LLS make this the most interesting era since the switch to summer, IMO. The glass ceiling is cracking.

This is a great time to be a Hull fan, particularly when you're an eternal pessimist like me and have been confounded for the two solid years since Kirk Yeaman slipped the ball to Shaul in front of your open-mouthed East stand and lit the blue touchpaper. I still feel, like Gary Barlow, that this is someone else's dream. The only downside is that I don't think the sheer exhilaration of Tackle 52 can be eclipsed. Even if our moment in the sun is over there are enough special moments at the highest level over the last couple of seasons to keep us warm for a good while.

You have been blessed really like MR said some clubs fans wait a lifetime to win something my first ever game was the 1980 cup final so you could say my time supporting peaked in my first ever game and since then I have seen league championship wins and various cup wins but they all came between 80-86 so from 14 to now I've seen very little success really

This is right really, we have been blessed as supporters in recent times. A kid who is a hull fan of Say 10-12 years old now may have seen the best times in the next 30 years. But I hope not and that we as a club can build on the recent successes and kick on.

So doesn't this say some fans including yourself are in exactly the same mould as the 10-5 and 6-42 Rovers fans?
Winning at Wembley in 2016 wasn't for me anywhere near as meaningful or emotional as it was for most, I just think as I always did that the not winning at Wembley thing was a load of toss, utterly meaningless. Cardiff in 2005 as indeed did 1982 mean far more to me than the wins in '16 & '17. My pinnacle I guess was the 1983 season, 2005 was very special because of where we were as a team and how we played on the day.
For you and others the '16 win, Houghton's tackle are the pinnacle as you've said, so don't you think that in exactly the same way some/most Rovers fans will be in exactly the same boat with the 10-5 derby final win being the pinnacle and difficult to eclipse?

for me and others of a certain age, 2016 was an emotional day imo never to be beaten, that's not to say I still don't get wound up every game, on fri I was frantic, but the feeling of 2016 will never be beaten for me, but its gone and I enjoyed 2017 more tbh, for me id love to get to Wembley and get the treble for others its the grand final,i guess it depends a lot on age group as well,

Maybe. As you say I think you’re in a minority of believing winning twice at Wembley was completely meaningless. I guess we could still be harking back to it in 40 years (well, not me personally as I’m unlikely to be around then!) but it would be disappointing to think it would signal we’d essentially done nothing since other than oscillate between the first and second tiers.

If you lose 50-0 at Wembley can you both lose and be beaten ?

The win at Wembley in 2016 was everything. Not winning at Wembley was a monkey on our back which we had no guarantee of ever being rid of.
Winning in 2005 was amazing but in now way compared to the sheer outpouring of emotion in 2016. How many of us came away from the game in 2005 elated but cursing the fact we hadn't won the game at Wembley Stadium?!
Then to go back a year later and right some wrongs of previous final defeats was too good to be true.

Visited the 10-5 bar only once in 2010 after a Catalans match and saw a clock stopped at 10:05 but never knew about the 6:42 one.

For me as a long time Hull FC supporter periods of solid success have come in roughly 30 year cycles with lean/ average times between. So 1950's, 1980's and 2010's. Also 1920's was good for my dad.

Really, why, because you placed a lot of emotion in to the fact we had not won at wembley, I didn't, it was a great day, a win we snatched from defeat by heroic efforts but an average performance on the day, I wasn't washed away with emotion like some because winning at Wembley wasn't a big deal for me.
For me it isn't the pinnacle of following Hull FC (for me) but it is for Mrs B and others. Read again why that is relevant to what is being discussed regarding hanging on to what fans do as their own pinnacle, like Rovers 10-5 win against us in 1980.

You're changing what I said, nowhere did I say winning the CC was meaningless, I said not having won at Wembley didn't mean anything, the location of the win is what you and others invested a lot of feeling/emotion in to that fact, for me it didn't matter one jot if we had won at wembley, simply winning wherever is enough.

I understand why and I'm not saying it's wrong to have felt that way I'm just exploring why fans hang on to a certain pinnacle as you said you would with 2016 as you don't think it can be bettered, just as the 10-5 victory for some Rovers fans is the pinnacle for them and will continue to hang on to that pinnacle just like yourself and others.

It makes you and other FC fans no different to the KR fans in that respect.

I was Lee's biggest critic, but I have happily had to eat that humble pie, Wembley was a BIG deal, maybe not to you, but I care more about what my cat thinks of his Dreamies than the diatribe you constantantly post.

ALL the Cup wins mean a lot to me. In 153 years we've only won it five times and I've been there for four of them, so I consider myself very fortunate.

2005 was an amazing feeling 23 years since the last Cup win. There was a tinge of regret that it wasn't at Wembley but it's still the same trophy. That said to finally get that monkey off our back in 2016 was for me the greatest day in the club's history.
