I'd also be launching a major review of the way Universities are run and the courses on offer. There are large sums of money wasted by University administrations and any number of courses of poor standard and/or limited value either academically or practically. Coupled with a review of how many graduates we actually need.

I agree, the value of a degree has been degraded by the insistence that 50% of the population get one, along side a fall in the quality and number of tradesmen, this balance needs to be addressed

and this is where my point about how it affects you changes people's opinion on how things are paid for, I have chosen not to have kids, I chose to leave University, by my own efforts I am a higher rate tax payer, I see no reason why I should pay even more to subsidise people who chose to have kids. Many will argue I am wrong, but they are not in the same position to be saying so.
which is wny the whole thing is a riddle wrapped up in an enigma.

| Lets get a few things straight.
1. The new administration will have to work within the budget, they can not increase either spending or put up the tax, that is already set out.
2. No one will be forced out of a job with the counci.
3. No council run care homes WILL BE CLOSED
4. Money will be found to top up funding for the Albemarle Music centre, this will mean.
These are promises that will be kept the Labour party has to honour its debt to the people of the city. No more promises on things they can not deliver, a different breed of Labour is emerging a more caring, involved and one living in the real world. We have to ensure that they keep there promises and listen to the citizens of Hull and do not fall into the traps of the past when Labour had 59 out of 60 seats.
Lets not make any mistake about the increases in student fees, it was political one born out of the middle classes wanting there Uni's back for there children only. Make no mistake about the Hull results this was mainly the population of Hull ridding itself of an unpopular leader and his cohorts.
The No to AV this afternoon sends out further messages to all politicians of all persuasions, they have to tidy up there acts. We need full PR and not some wishy washy AV voting system that allows losers to win. The count has now started for the next general election and in the next few months I expect the Tory's to call a snap one, to rid themselves of the orange clad warriors and get in before the full cuts bite deep.

I know you're fond of this argument but it's utterly specious IMO. You can use the same criteria to argue against funding anything you don't personally benefit from via taxation. For instance, I can't recall the last time I used a library, or public swimming pool, or sports centre. I haven't had need of the fire brigade, I've never used an ambulance or had an operation - the list goes on. I don't begrudge my taxes being used to pay for these facilities though. Even the USA doesn't base your rate of tax on what you actually use.
Oh - and in the USA you get reduced fees if you attend a University in your home state. Because of the contribution your family have already made through taxation and you presumed future contribution. Oddly we seem to have ignored this factor in the UK.

| Listen i dont pretend to know anything about politics at all but what is clear for all to see if they look is that all the labour party will do now in their mass of seats is run the system down so badly that the local folk forget its a local labour government and they will simply blame the coalition thus feathering their own beds for the next general election ..
makes perfect sense , the want to be in politics should ban a person from ever being in it!!

If you meant ruling class, why say middle class?
And if Labour hadn't introduced fees in the first place this bunch of chancers wouldn't have had the opportunity to increase them. A plague on all their houses.

Expro has a point, this scenario has been widely discussed on political programs,
Labour have everything to gain by running councils poorly

My experience of local councillors is that they don't need any extra encouragement to do that.

So where will the money come from?
Labour didn't exactly put the City on the map since WW2.
Does anyone seriously think they are going to sell the KC Stadium and use the money to tart up the old Boulevard ground?
Elliott Morley being a wonderful example of the Labour Councillors that have graced this City.
