| The hard work starts now, we simply weren't anywhere near as good as the 'hype' this afternoon and have many issues to address.
The defence looked like they had just met for the first time, far too many errors (I appreciate it was cold and this can lead to knock-ons but some of the passing was suicidal), little impact from the forwards and the same old lack of ideas in attack.
One problem we can't easily fix is that we seem to be short of one big impact forward, with Manu and Moa gone, we only have O'Meley as a big 'old fashioned' impact player and in a game in weather like today's this is going to harm us IMO. I'm sure our 'agile' forwards will be good in the summer weather, but how many games do we get each year in warm weather?!

I agree that him or Chase were the missing piece of the jigsaw, but we have to make the best of the players we have. And to be fair to the halves today, the forwards weren't getting us in a good position and even the best halves can't play well behind a beaten pack.

I'd agree with that, also Rovers are in effect a week ahead of us in their pre-season, as they went to their training camp before Xmas and have had 1 more friendly.

| I thought our defence in the first wasn't aggressive enough. When we decided to get in their faces, we forced an error and scored our first try. Seemed to me that, though Gentle has to try out different players, it didn't do us any favours and we seemed to have little shape. I expect us to look a lot better with a consistent team playing every week.
We came out in the second a lot better, almost scoring from the first set. We look as though we have the ability now to turn it on and spread it wide, just didn't work today. Their offloading game was a lot better, but we dealt with it a little better in the second.

At times we offloaded it too much, when in freezing conditions the good old tactics of '5 drives & a kick' would have been better!
Chopping and changing the team can't really be avoided in friendlies, everyone needs a run-out to get fit, and everyone deserves a chance to challenge for a first team spot.
I do think today's performance (or lack of!) will mean a few more senior players get a run out at York than we'd have expected.

| the problem in attack is that we try to score off every play and try hollywood offloads that go straight to the opposition. they need to learn to build pressure through the set of tackles and the force another set if necessary

| I'm just hoping Holdsworth will improve, a lot! I was never his biggest fan at Salford and he's done nothing in these 2 friendlies.

agree, we also threw a lot of stupid passes out near our own line. The kind of passes you do when your 2 points down in a must-win game with 5mins to go!

| Are you for real? It's a friendly FFS!. It's one game and it ain't even a competitive fixture. We well still finish above them and the best SL team in Hull. Keep the faith! Amazes me what some people think about the club. You can't judge the club on one game like this and state we have problems and stuff need addressing. Some people need to get a grip and calm down!

Since when did I say it was a 'crisis' and we are doomed? I just stated that we have work to do over the next 2 weeks before we play the Champions away from home.

Some fans are acting like its a crisis. You said we have several problems that need sorting out. I wouldn't particularly agree with that. You can't say we have several problems based on one game. Barcelona got beat the other day, I take it they have problems and have stuff that need addressing. It's just a one game team performance. I'd be worried if it was mid season and certain factors wasn't sorted out by then. Not now though!

| It's only a friendly, of course. But Rovers fans are justified in taking more positives from this game than us, regardless of the scoreline. Our inability to deal with Dobson was glaringly obvious and when you add in Travis Burns, they have a very handy half back combination. We have more options but their first choice halves will be better than ours IMO. They looked sharper than us with slicker combinations and shape, and really the first half was the only barometer as they largely had their 2nd team out in the second. Pretty disappointing afternoon.

| My issues is with the h/backs, why do we keep playing a hooker at h/back, Hereami is a great player but he aint no h/back, I really hope Gentle goes with Holdsworth & Seymour with Horney back up. I am a massive fan of Houghton but he has to stop trying to do the h/back role and take the line on more his play today was far too predictable. Our hookers need to rotate, I thought KR looked the better side today but I doubt SL will be shiiting themselves about either team based on today's performance, still plenty of time though to iron things out, that is what friendlies are for, I do fear our lack of quality h/backs or the coaches constant need to play other players there may haunt us yet again, hope I am wrong though

| Plenty of things to work on, as has every team in the league.
It was a disappointing performance but so was the corresponding game last season which turned out to mean nothing.
The main concern is the half back situation, we have a few options but who knows what the best combination is.

I hope one of the answers about the make up of the side was Seymour at scrum half. Be interesting who starts against York.

In defence of Houghton, I think it's at least partly a by-product of us playing a hooker at scrum half and him trying to make up for the creativity we then lack. Seymour at 7 really is our best chance of solving both problems, so I hope Gentle comes round to that way of thinking.

Quite agree. I thought we looked a much better team when Seymour was on the pitch. Hopefully he and Holdsworth will be the half backs.

It will. Think the intention was to play the second team but after today reckon Gentle will want another run-out for a few.
