City have today announced that they are getting behind the safe standing in football campaign in principle, and if the law was changed would begin conversations with the SMC & Council.

Hopefully the law gets changed and we get both ends behind the goals converted to the new terracing, giving plenty of room for those who want to stand or sit.

It won't happen, so don't get too animated about it.

The only way the bunch of idiots currently in charge of the country would consider changing the legislation, is if one of their backers told them they could make a pile of money from the deal.

I'm no construction expert, but the dimensions of all the concrete would have to be changed, wouldn't it? Can't see it happening anyway.

Earlier on this year I was invited to a safe standing exhibition by the chairman of Hull City official supporters club and passed it on to Pete Allen, FC voices etc, as I couldn't make it. The gist of the matter is that it is feasible to have standing areas, as they do in stadia across Europe, without having any constructional restraints. The standing areas would be small, maybe 1,000-2,00 places and would obviously necessitate the removal of some seating and the installation of some crush barriers. The section at our ground being considered/looked at was the middle to top tier of the east stand either side of the half way line. It could happen, Aston Villa are at the forefront of this move and the signs are that it may well be trialed in the very near future.

so citys going to talk to the smc does that mean the allams are going going to talk to themselves? Fc Voices did indeed attend a roadshow where a section of the proposed terracing was displayed. It is not a question of open terracing with crush barriers as was the traditional lay out but a sort of caged construction where each row is made up of tip up seats on a high frame which acts as a Crush barrier for the folks in the row behind. It would work well for those who wanted to stand and predominently be for them because those who wanted to sit would either have their view block by the bloke standing in front or would have to watch through the mesh of the barrier in front of them.

having watched the progress of the idea closely as Cod'ead says it appears that this government don't have that much appetite for the issue and are probably put off somewhat by the recent Hillsboro anniversary and revelations. However it would work and activists are pressing for a trial sanctioned by Government, at Villa.

If the legislation was passed then it would be passd onto local licencing authorities and the individual Clubs to make the final decision, so it is still some way off. The last I heard it was being talked about for the South stand rather than the East however and as I say in the end if it became law then the Council would not only have to agree to it as owner of the Stadium but also as licencing authority for sportsgrounds and places of public entertainment.

and also fund the developments, for that reason alone it will not happen any time soon, cutbacks and infrastructure spending on a facility used by a minority of the voters don't mix.

I reckon I could find a couple of thousand who have STARTED supporting the team because of seating.

Putting in a standing area is going back to the 1970's. maybe we need to reintroduce stray dogs on the pitch, like used to happen in the 'good old days'.

I don't know anyone whose stopped, but I know plenty of people, including me who much prefer to stand up whilst watching sport. The FSF brought some samples of the standing that would be installed and it's basically a seat with a crash barrier in front of it, like they have in Germany.

Think you get three standing spaces to two seats. So if applied to parts of the KC, we could easily get up the capacity over 30,000. It wouldn't affect FC oher than those who wish to stand at the games again, but may be useful for City if they got promoted back to the Premiership and future RL Internationals.

I've spoken to someone at City who has looked closely into it and he said to me the capacity at the KC would barely change if they did introduce them, I think it would increase by something like 1500 if the did come in.

It's a while off yet anyway I'd think.

It wouldn't at all they have looked at that issue and it is not the case. It would need considerable structural changes to address more peole being in there because of the need to increase the width of exit isles and steps, the number of toilets and turnstiles and even eating facilities and the disabled seats to capacity ratio would have to rise all of which would mean considerable structural alterations, which the Council would not be keen on carrying out in the present climate.

For those that are saying it's a backwards step or it's just for nostalgia reasons couldn't be more wrong. Just because you prefer sitting and it's safer doesn't mean it's right and the only option.

I far prefer standing. The freedom to move around to a better area if you're stuck with a n0b, or if you want to move to where the atmosphere is, or if you turn up late and want to stand with a group of friends. You can't get that in an unreserved seating area unless you are lucky enough to find spare seats.

The grounds that have standing in (under a roof that is!) I've often found have the better atmospheres. I know of many people that don't go anymore because the KC has been like a morgue at times and they only do away games.

There's nothing wrong or backwards about giving people more options. In fact, it's the exact opposite. Having the option of both would be a forwards step.

Having said that, the suggested method I'm not sure about. Would it still allow for the movement of people? Or would you still have to occupy the same area as your 'seat'?

No and yes.

Looks like the only similarity between Safe Standing and the old terraces is the fact that you're standing up. All the downsides with none of the benefits as far as I can tell.
