| I remember him playing against hull.k.rit was a night game, possibly in the floodlit trophy,2 mins to go we were losingby a point or 2,and lampy broke through,20 yards out only millward to beat,he was playing fullback,we all thought he would take millward with him over the line, but somehow roger jumped up around lampys neck and pulled him straight, down, could,nt believe it,if it had been a 15 stoner he,d have taken him over line, great player, shame about his knees

| Came from English RU rather than the usual Welsh. I think he injured his knee in a pre season friendly against Batley. His signature was to throw the ball skywards when he scored.
I believe he appeared on Blue Peter of all things because of the knee surgery he had to try to return but sadly never did.

| I seem to remember reading at the time that it was inability to get insurance cover rather than being 100% crocked?
Lampy and Graham Idle had a good move straight from the scrum where Idle would slip the ball out of his back pocket into Lampy's hands. Lampy then just put his head down and sped through the gap.

| Sure he was capped for England RU had a brill start because he ran with the ball in hand and not kick it very unusual for RU in the late 70s

| He did play for England RU.
Bill Beaumont mentions him in his book, saying that he was frustrated because he always ran the ball.
Says it all. (They didn't like converts in those days)
He is my favourite player of that time (even above Topper if I'm honest)
In the modern day game he'd have been a world class hooker in my opinion.
His knee op wouldn't be a big deal these days but when he had his it was so new he was featured on tv as said above.
Incredibly strong, great pass, fast on the break and a really nice guy.
He tells the story of being pulled out by the ref once and being told turn round so ref could take his number and asked his name.
"Michael Stanislav Lampkowski".........he let him off.

He did play after his op and he was on BBC on a medical programme. It was presented by Graeme Garden of Goodies fame. I remember it but there is a really good summary on Wikipedia about him.

| His rugged no nonsense play was great. If he was involved in the tackle he would more than often come up with the ball. You know what you got with Lampy 100% effort, a full shift , and runs from the scrum that would put the team on the front foot. Never let the team down and was Mr reliable.

| I remember seeing him destroy Bramley singlehandedly at McLaren Field once (which was unusual as we seemed unable to beat them every time we played them) whilst wearing the number 6 shirt. According to the Yorkshire Evening Post David Topliss had a fantastic game! (he was out injured).

| I remember a newspaper headline describing the Topliss / Lambchops partnership as "the sword and the rapier".
You couldn't ask for more from him. Players like him, Nigel Bell, JT become icons from the pure guts and determination they gave.
One of my all time favourites.
