If we're talking boarded up pubs/clubs the list will increase daily. Glad to see vine tree reopened last week

The Black Rock has / used to have, a couple of framed lists of closed down pubs, and that was back in the 70s. 3 more anyhoo,
The Balmoral , Double Up, The Saw.

O was brought up in the Union - my dad was Landlord - until I was 17.

Sad to see it like that, but no-one can make any money out of that site without flattening the pub and re-developing it!

I used to work at the vine tree, and the then landlord Dave Petty ( thoroughly decent fella) used to have a copy of an old document tgat used to list the pubs within tge city limits and it was staggering!!!
And that was more than twenty years ago!!
The pub game us completely on its and tge main blame IMO goes down to the pub company's creaming the off it!!

I also was brought up in pubs my Dad was landlord of the Alec in BV 1965 - 67
I used to serve before games then let off about 3 mins before KO still got in to see the start

My grandma kept the Jockey in the sixties and seventies.She employed Keefy as a barman for a while.He was a really nice bloke who put up with a lot of abuse in those politically incorrect days.

I once saw Keefy in a fight in Westgate and could he fight, mind he had to be able to fight!
As mentioned political in correctness ruled.

Packet of 10No6 fags ended up in fishing nets in the Jolly,got chucked out trying to get them.

He also worked in Frier Tucks,saw him give a lad a right pasting.Built like a second rower.

built a reputation for not being messed about, as a young un up town I just used to give him a wide birth for both reasons

Keefy...Quite a blast from the past, does anyone know what became of him ? On that topic, has anyone mentioned the New York bar?

He passed away a couple of years or so ago I believe.New York,in my eyes,was one of the best pubs in Wakey at that time,guaranteed to pull....what ever gender..!!!!

Keefy also worked at Roundabout when Madge was landlady circa 1968/70 ish.
Always a good laugh and would always have a chat if drinking on your own.

Wakefield Arms, shame no one has taken over that place , been left to ruin.

Not wanting to get in a debate about the rights and wrongs - but I feel the smoking ban was the final nail as it were.

I have always smoked when drinking but for some reason always went outside. However many others did not and with prices of both beer and fags going up many decided to smoke and drink themselves to death at home where they could afford it. Like it or not these were the regulars who kept pubs going through the week and now they are gone there simply isn't the cash flow as far as I can tell.

A group of folk on my street clubbed together and built a bar room (holds 20 and actually has a bar with optics) in one guys back garden. You can buy them off the internet flat pack I'm told! They buy special offer beer at Asda and hey presto - pub life at a third the price with no last orders or any other restrictions.

I've been a few times and it wasn't bad - and I didn't have to wait for a taxi.

It really is such a shame, fun though the above was it's not the same nor does it give folk a job (well at Asda maybe)
