| that Brian Noble is coming to Wakefeld and John Kear is joining Castleford? Shush because it is a secret at the moment, but I personally am very happy with that outcome.

| I think that we would have the better end of the deal but I would not be overly happy with Noble as I would prefer an Aussie to come over and bring some new ideas with him.

Yes I have seen this comment made on a number of other posts. I'm not sure why everyone thinks that untried and untested would be a good thing for Wakefield right now?
Personally I am very happy with Brian Nobles track record and would settle for the same at Wakefield next year. Plus he is highly regarded in RL and would be a clear sign of Wakefields ambition at this moment in time.

| I think Noble would be ideal. He's improved every team he has taken on. He couldn't take Wigan to the next level, but he certainly set them on the way. The next couple of years is going to be a mix of young 'uns and decent signings, and Noble would do nicely for me.

Admittedly, I'm no expert, but I can't honestly see a lot of difference between Noble and Kear, other than Noble has generally had more resources at his disposal and has been more successful because of it. It won't be pretty, that's for sure.

Totally agree - Nobby is another dinosaur, cut from the same cloth as JK; we need fresh ideas, new techniques and a change of culture.
It's not for me - I'm out.

To some extent, I agree, but for every Michael Maguire, you get a Kevin Walters. There can only be so many Aussie assistants capable of taking over. Maguire's replacement won't be ready, and neither will Trent Robinson's. How many other young eager assistants are there who are of their standard, because sometimes people are always meant to be assistants (Jimmy Lowes, "our" Tony Smith, Iestyn Harris, Jon Sharpe, Richard Agar, etc).
We have to be realistic and accept that we'll get no world beaters for a while. We'll bring on some of the kids and maybe pad them out with some experience bought from elsewhere, and Noble would just bring them on enough. By that point, if we have a new stadium and have turned into a top eight side, we will start to attract the bigger names, and that's the time for the next Trent Robinson, not now.

Personally I think he badly underachieved in his time at Wigan and I would not like to see him at Trinity unless it was in a director of rugby capacity.

Think that might have been to do with mindset. Noble improves them and so players coast. Maguire comes in and so takes them to the next level. Noble knew that his brief was to keep Wigan up and remould them, and he did. It must be very hard to say to players that they are still not good enough.
Fitness wise, maybe Noble is a bit old school, because fitness-wise, Wigan are a much different machine.
I just think that we need to stabilise and slowly improve for a couple of years, and Noble would do that, rather than taking a gamble on an Aussie who fancies a go.

It's a whole different philosophy of the game, for mine. I don't think we gain anything by stabilising and improving under Noble, becasue I think that's exactly what we've been doing anyway. You may not like what you see on the pitch, but do you really think Noble would have created a silk purse out of a sow's ear? No offence meant to anyone here, but the fact is we do have the weakest squad in SL, and by some distance. We have a chance now, another 3 years at least. We should use it and do what the franchise system is supposed to allow us to do. Take a calculated gamble to try and improve [iour[/i game.

| I wouldn't want Noble,
When looking in detail at the his previous clubs, talking to players who have spent a lot of time under him, I'm not overenthusiastic about him being given the reigns at Wakefield.
Most of all I do not want to see Jon Sharp being brought in as Nobles assistant which is exactly what will happen.
I would rather see Powell than Noble, I'd rather see Georgalis with Nigel wright assisting, I wouldn't be over enamoured with Karl Harrison either.
We have a superb opportunity to change the culture of this club and take a huge leap into the modern era of coaching, Noble, Harris, Harrison, Agar, Sharp etc do not fit that bill.
Appointing Noble might catch headlines but it wont inspire me.

Noble had one of the best players in the world in Barrett, a player that could have won the title on his own and the only time we saw the best of him was when the game was lost and the game plan went out of the window. The Bradford comeback is a classic example.
Tactically very poor and straight out of the Kear school of thought. Wakefield now have an opportunity to kick on, the game has moved on since the days of Noble and Kear they have been left behind.
I would like to see Millward, or Purthill given a shot, or we go down the route of the Aussie path, which is much harder these days given the visa situation.

Millward? No thank you.
Barrett was unsettled, that was obvious fairly early on. The game was lost against us and he just spat his dummy and was sin-binned for the last ten of the game.
I'm not trying to build a case for Noble, but I wouldn't be disappointed as a stabilisation for a couple of years. I agree that we should think bigger, but no one in the rugby league world will have gone, "Wakefield, got a franchise? Thank God. This is my moment. Where do I sign?"
My thinking is that Noble would be good until we can start to attract the signings we'd like.

Barrett was outstanding one of the best players I have had the pleasure to watch in a Wigan shirt, he was frustrated due to the coaching of the team. If we had him now we would be unbeatable in this league, although Finch is doing a cracking job his is no Barrett.
Noble had virtually the exact same set of players as Maguire did last year but played 1 out rugby and surrounded himself with a poor back room, much like Kear.
I do not get the Millward hate, he is a cracking coach, he failed badly at Wigan but that was more to do with his history prior to taking the job, he is doing a blinding job and Leigh, and has at every club he has been involved with except Wigan.

Not heard a single good word said about Millward the man.
I think Noble tried to carry on the Bradford Dulls kind of play with a side that wasn't as physically dominant as the Bradford team. But you could apply the Millward boast to Noble, in that they've done well everywhere apart from Wigan, but Noble comes out best, in that he turned them around and built the foundations for Maguire. He just couldn't take them to the next level.
As for Barrett, he was very good, but only in patches. You say that he was frustrated by the coaching. I've never spoken to the guy, so I don't know, but I just got the impression that he never really settled in the UK and was always looking for the next plane home.
