He has had a dip in form this year but who wouldn't with an ever changing back line. Delighted he played well this week, when the back line is settled Mathers is a decent full back.

Not sure he did. Not a fan never will be, but I thought he was playing reasonably well when inexplicably plonked on the wing. It was this that turned me against Agar a Coach I'd supported for misusing a player I hadn't which is ironic. The more I think about it the more I'm convinced Agar was begging to be let go. For once I must applaud Mathers response, he has returned to his proper position with a vengeance.

Should never have been put on the wing - he is the best Full Back currently at the club, credit RM for playing there as he probably wasn't over enamoured at it.
His attitude etc is top notch imo, notice who is the first in to celebrate tries, think it shows that he's one of the players who really cares.

Well you see this when we score and when we win, but so often he has been the least interested looking player on the park this season.

He played a belter against Wigan and let's hope for more but all is not excused from my perspective.

Richard Mathers....hmmm.

I sort of think he's a good, experienced pro who clearly knows his way around the football field, and is able to read the minds of clever footballers such as Timmy. Being able to do that is clearly an attribute and puts you above other players who can't read a player or anticipate a team-mate. Teams need clever footballers to put the shine on things after other, perhaps more cerebrally challenged of their team-mates put in the hard yakka and the grunt work. Harsh maybe, but certainly true - but the true fans love the guys who do the grunt just as much as they love the artistes who put the final swirl on the canvas.

I don't know RM but he seems like a bright guy who has a will to win and loves being part of a successful team and is popular with his team-mates. Again nothing wrong with that.

I also believe that he is clever enough to judge when to put his body on the line, but importantly and sometimes disappointingly for fans, also when not to. To me he is acutely aware that he won't be a pro rl player all his life, and with that in mind I feel he is protective of both his his body and his face, because he wants them both to be marketable long after his playing days are finished. Other players don't have that foresight, they just put their bodies and good looks on the line every week, and the supporters love them for that. That, I believe is why RM sometimes appears a little uncommitted, you just have to ask yourself whether you are prepared to accept his shortcomings for all the other benefits he clearly brings to the team. Quite simply, do the pros outweigh the cons. For me, the answer to that question is yes at the moment - but it's always going to be a close call, he's that kind of player who polarises speccies. Wire fans adore him.

As for the barking of support and encouragement to his team-mates, and the theatrical gesturing to the crowd, that all leaves me a little cold and makes me worry that he is trying to portray a greater sense of commitment to the supporters than he actually feels. It just looks a little forced, but it might be doing him a dis-service.

All things considered I'm ok with him at the moment. I'm sure he'll be relieved about that....

Don't know if he's out of contract at the end of the season but surely worth a contract now. Best attacking full back we've had for years at Bellevue.
Obviously loves it here and his enthusiasm is there for all to see!

Deserved MoM yesterday. I called it just before it was announced.
He was superb.

Its good to see him getting some deserved praise for a change instead of getting the blame for just about everything that goes wrong at the club.

I always thought he was the ONLY fullback at senior level at the club.
Hopefully his form will continue, after all attack is the best form of defence!
Seriously, his timing into the line is the best I have seen for years and though he's no Gary Cooper yet (for the younger ones acknowledged as the best attacking fullback of the late 60's he's good to watch!

Gary Cooper arguably the best shame he spent too much time at Fev. Just off topic we was talking about him last night Kath Hetherington said her brother Gary played for Wakey and was just wondering if that was him.

Well after last night (and the previous 3 games), Mathers has exonerated himself as far as I am concerned - great performance last night.

Glad to see because he always comes across well and is definitely one of our leaders on the field.

TBH I didn't know, it was Cheshire cat what said it was but you'd expect him to know because he's a lot older than me, cheers anyway.

McShane led them out I think but Mathers is VC so should be him.

He was excellent last night - no arguments from me; his link with Smith adds a real attacking threat and he is one of the few players clever enough to keep up with t'Wakey Wizard.

Seems inspired since Richard Agar left, love his enthusiasm if nothing else and the way he gets the crowd going when he walks back after a try..

Unless we can find a better alternative out there, and i'm not sure there is one available, then i wouldn't be adverse to him getting another years contract. And believe me i didn't think i'd be saying that 6 months ago b

I am with Theboyem on this one, not his biggest fan been awesome since Agar departure. 1 year deal for me.

If he wants to play another year, I'd be happy with that; with Max Jowitt featuring more regularly as his understudy, so he's ready to take over as starting fb for 2016.

As others have pointed out, THIS Mathers is worth keeping hold of.
Hardly put a foot wrong since Agar left.

It's the type of player he is.
Playing behind a pack going forward is key for him. He isn't a defensive full back.

When we play a team with a role on, the usual suspects will be calling him lazy and a coward.
We have to understand what we have with him.

He also responds better with Smith because he gets good accurate passes.
The clever players are all picking up with Smith's play.
