| True but not when there is nothing to be gained, he threw a 10 yard pass to BJB on sunday who got smashed as he was catching the ball. That was in our own twenty and surely not worth the risk.
Personal opinion is that in recent games he looks scared when on the ball, not just kick returns. He seems to have stopped backing himself near the opponents line even when there is a gap. Also some of his defensive efforts have been extremely poor. As I said, watch the Regan Grace try back and have a look at his effort.

Max Jowitt is probably better at returning kicks than Grix is whereas Grix's strengths are in other areas where Max Jowitt is weaker. Would you rather Grix took all the returns in? I wouldn't, MCB and BJB are both faster and better kick returners and it leaves Grix free to start organising the attack.

Because of course the game plan never, ever changes from one season to the next...? In fact, why aren't we still doing 5 drives and a kick like Kear used to do?!

| Quote ="TheMightyTrin"I said the same regarding Grix and his positioning on sunday,
I feel that if he had made more of an effort to do his job and get to the ball first, rather than trying to block off Makinson for his first, then he could have stopped the try.
Also, why does Scott Grix feel the need to pass the ball on kick return every time?! some were in very dubious circumstances and actually left us in a worse position than if Grix had have just run forwards and taken the tackle.
For me, it is time to give Max a go. I think it has been said regularly over the last 1-2 months that he was our best player early on in the season and I agree, but how long can you give someone based on their performances in feb-may?
Jowitt to start against hudds.'" Totally agree. Too many errors over the past few weeks

| Quote ="bren2k"Do you not think it could be that the game plan is set up in such a way that certain players do avoid heavy contact? Does Liam Finn routinely run into a 3 man tackle for example, or does he preserve himself by spinning the ball out and setting up a move? There are smaller pivots on the pitch who wouldn't last a full game if they were being smashed by forwards on a regular basis - [uand most fb's are now acting as pivots - so it seems entirely reasonable that they aren't expected to be involved in big collisions.[/u
To suggest that Scott Grix is in any way a shirker, is just shameful.'"

So, you suggest that a FB as a position acts as a pivot, so doesnt get involved in the collisions as part of a game plan. Yet when Max has played this season, he hasn't avoided the collisions......

He doesn't avoid collisions though does he? He just passes to a winger if the pass is on, probably since his coach tells him to do that.
I think Max Jowitt is a good player but the way some people talk about him on here you'd think we had one of the Aussie immortals being kept out of the team. There was even a guy on here who knew some Dewsbury fans and he said they weren't particularly that impressed by Max Jowitt when he was on loan there.

There were lots of times in last Sunday's game when I thought we were. How many times did you see the ball pass between more than two pairs of hands and out to the wings? Alright, the defense were very quick off the mark (offside?) and closed us down, but there didn't seem many attempts to move the ball along the line.

Happy to leave this to CC to manage.'"
Can't understand why he's not selected, because I believe Grix is looking a little jaded, I agree with some others on here: why was he dropped after that Salford performance?

| I reckon Jowitt will have gained more experience this season working along side Grix than at any other time in his career and Wakey will reap the benefits of that for next few seasons. You dont have to be on the pitch all the time to get experience.

And that's it in a nutshell.
Personally, I think we'll see Jowitt in the 8's, because as has already been said, Grix has looked a bit fatigued for the last couple of games, which is understandable, given that he's played a lot.
What's the expected timescale on Johnstone's return by the way - is he out for the whole season?

| He nearly gave me a heart attack three times with risky passes on out line after collecting a high ball against Saints but that risky play has brought us some entertaining rugby this year. Grix has been on the whole fantastic this year and hopefully young Max is learning from him.
I honestly thought Grix would be a utility back to replace Hall but he's given us far more than that most of the time.

This sums it up for me.
Grix is a target because it's his turn.

Most teams are using the strategy now of outside backs taking the first couple of runs out of yardage - it works well in many instances - especially with a player like MCB, who can step through tackles and put the hammer down; Johnstone was making a speciality of that too before his injury.
I tend to agree it can be a bit heart in mouth, but it saves some gas for the forwards and creates opportunities in broken play - and I'd rather that, than boring, predictable, 5 drives and a kick; and I like the endeavour of a long pass, rather than that annoying "was it forward, was it not" hand-off kind of pass, that Tomkins favours.

| I agree Bren. Of course it has to be in line with your skill but I will always back endeavour and creativity over safety.
That's been a theme this year and us great to watch.
