| Quote ="bellycouldtackle"Any idiot can see that Carney is a real handfull, I think he has 13 tries this season. He would get in any SL team. Putting any of our wingers up against him Fox, Riley, Lyne, Mathers or Tom Johnson would do no good, in order of preference , ie ability to tackle and bottle, you would go with Riley, Fox, Johnson, Mathers, Lyne . So our coaching staff put our best tackling winger on opposite wing and put our least brave in the tackle winger up against the beast that is Carney. A good coaching staff would have put Walshaw on the wing, our own beast, who has a big heart and is our best tackler in the back line ( inderstand that this is not saying much ). You will note that Walshaw made 24 tackles and missed zero. Wella Haraki is having a great season, Walshaw looked after him no problems. Total lack of thought, planning and Rugby understanding from our coaching staff.'"
Think Walshaw on the wing in place of Mathers opposite Carney and Ryan in centre with Collis may have been a good defensive option but have you seen Ryans's stats for the game? They're appalling. Did he play the full 80 mins?

Sorry missed that. Another injury. The difference in fitness between the teams was also noticeable.

| Matt Ryan picked up a shoulder/arm injury very early in the game and played on for a few more sets and then was taken off.

I would agree with that but I also think being so far ahead gives you an extra spring in your step.

| After watching again (from tv this time) the game I had to pause it when Mathers threw that stupid pass on our 10. That was the turning point in the game IMO. Castleford were on top throughout but our heads went down after then.

| In the second half Kirmond puts a great tackle on Carney in the Castleford 20. The Sky team pick up on it and you can see "the Beast" on his haunches getting his wind back into his lungs.

Yes and if Mathers had hit him with a tenth of what Kirmo did he would have put him in touch.

Exactly - I don't expect Mathers to be as good a tackler as Kirmond, but my 76 year old mum could have managed that one let alone a Pro RL player.

Great goal line defence and reads offence support well.

I have just watched first half and this moment was a very telling mistake by a seasoned pro.
Collis had just gone over on his ankle and Tony area pointed out he was having a moment to shake it off and Mathers pops out a pass without looking.
This lead to first try and Siejka kicking out on the full lead to second try.
After this, we are chasing the game and mistakes are coming thick and fast.

Said this at the time:
Quote ="The Avenger"Well done Richie Mathers, 1st tackle 10 yards off our line and throws a no look pass to a player who's just got up off the floor after being treated by the physio, next set sees Cas score'"
The worst thing was a few minutes later he looked to do it again rather than take a ball in but there was no one outside him so he had to hold onto it.

| Agree with all that. The non pass to Collis was a stupid mistake that he should have known not to attempt in that position.
Cost us a lot.
The thing he gives us is a safe pair of hands under the high ball. It's an area we were wide open with Fox and Cockayne.
The problem is he doesn't do the good things that Fox and Cockayne did.
When we get a winger that can catch and run, we'll be fine and Mathers will be moved I'm sure.

We are so missing the yards those two got us - two of the best in SL in that regard.

I agree. In the first season I thought our kick return from back three was second only to Leeds.
Others had individual players who could be argued were better but as a 3 they were excellent and made massive yards for us.

| Makes you miss Cockayne doesn't it; one of the toughest, hardest running, most horrible little bleeders in SL - always looked for meters, never submitted to a tackle and was quite prepared to put his body on the line in every collision.
That tactic worked well for us last season - Fox and Cockayne returning the ball for the first two tackles; the problems came in defence of course, but that's another story.

He is definitely not like that now, when we played Saints he turned his back to the ruck on our line and they scored from his mistake.

| Quote ="Theboyem"I'd have Fox on the wing ahead of Mathers any day of the week. Yes he is error prone but he is at least a natural winger and will always give it everything he has got. Not sure the same can be said about Richie.
That said Owen and Riley will likely be our first choice wingers for the rest of the season.'"
LOOK!!! WHILST I am no fan of Richie Mathers and think he was/ is an inadequate full back for a SL club, he is a full back and the only one we have. If I am going to judge him its on his merits then I would like to do it whilst he plays in his position as our only full back. To stick him on the wing is IDIOTCIC MR AGAR AND TO LET FOX GO WHILST YOU DO IT...YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!! AGAR OUTTTTTTTT!!! So I shall try to finish this calmly. ...Richie Mathers would do us better at full back for all his short comings than the disarray that Agar has designed. Mathers should have gone in the mix of the close season last gone. He didn't. Agar keeps the wrong guys and ignores the right..over and over again. We are sunk with that clueless plank in charge. Tied to him as we are...I despair. But all in all I'd put Mathers back to FB for now till we can ditch him and keep Walshaw and Ryan at Centre as we were not shedding points for fun when they were together. I rate Collis but he needs some time to get back in the groove. If I see Lyne pull a Trinity shirt on again I may self combust. No doubt Mr Bean will have him back soon. I am truly tired to my back teeth of the situation now. This is as bad a place as we've been in years as an RL team
