| Quote ="Lord Bruce Burton"There is no momentum rule in the laws of the game. Your undoubted knowledge of Newton's laws are not necessary if you read the rule.
International laws of the game
Section 10
[iThe direction of a pass is relative to the player making it and
not to the actual path relative to the ground. A player running
towards his opponents’ goal line may throw the ball towards
a colleague who is behind him but because of the thrower’s
own momentum the ball travels forward relative to the
ground. This is not a forward pass as the thrower has not
passed the ball forward in relation to himself
[/i
You state there is no "momentum rule", then quote the very rule
.
The bit you highlighted is exactly what I described...and is also why it has nothing to do with where the passer is when the ball is caught, only the momentum he has when actually passing.
You can't impart an impulse on an object e.g. the ball, AFTER it has left your hands.
You can't be a referee, they would surely know that.'"

Im not sure if you are being deliberately obtuse but i will give you benefit of the doubt.
There is no momentum rule.
There is one rule about passing which happens to mention the word momentum.
It doesn't mention Newton, impulse or directional velocity. It is plain to see and applies to a standing passer or one moving at pace...

What do you mean by "there is no momentum rule"? That momentum is not mentioned in the rule or that the rule is not titled "The Momentum Rule"? That's all irrelevant.
And how am I being obtuse?
The rule doesn't mention Newton, why would it? Everything in the universe is subject to the Laws of Physics, we don't have to refernce them at every turn.
A standing passer has no momentum, so if the ball travels forward, it must be through the application of a different force. Why is that so hard to understand?

I think the Chief Engineer's saying is much more apt here..."Ya, cannae change the Laws of Physics".

| Touch judges aren't prepared to call forward passes & the normal position for the referee is nowhere near close enough to be able to call them with any real certainty. Perhaps theres an argument for the ref to stay level with play & for the touch judges to manage the defensive line being 10m back.

There is no such thing as the Momentum Rule. There is a rule about what constitutes a forward passs and what doesn't.

| How hard would it be to put a gps unit in the ball and have the VR able to state definitively if a pass was forward, or not?
That's a genuine question by the way - I literally have no idea.

Cricket & tennis already use Hawkeye. The use in tennis is probably more relevant as it's all about the actual flight path, rather than cricket where there's the element of doubt (about half a balls's width) for the predictive element in an lbw appeal.

FFS, how many times, it wasn't Cas's fault nor, from what I gather, was it a Cas fan.

I quite agree - his performance on Yorkshire Radio the other week was positively cringeworthy; he persistently taunted the presenter with 'gay' jokes, then sed like Beavis and Butthead - most unedifying.

The FIFA have funded some testing of goal line technology, i think they selected three systems, one being Hawkeye and they have rejected it (Hawkeye), I'm not sure why!

| Regarding the 2 'forward passes' (personally I think they were forward, but what do I know?) some of my friends and myself think that you should be able to go the video ref for a forward pass but ONLY if it is the last pass leading to the try.

I think in football they have said they cannot put this sort of device in the ball as the balance of the ball would be affected due to the weight of the tracker/unit or whatever. I reckon if it could be done relatively easilythen the footballers would be doing it already, given the huge financial sums potetially at stake with promotion, relegation, champions league etc.

Apparently next season I have been informed by a young ref that forward passes will be looked at by the video ref but only for tries,as regards touch judges,if they could keep with the game they would be on the field playing the game.too many fossils with flags.

| As in the last pass before the touch down? Would get rid of all the arguments and hopefully they could clear up whether this momentum rule is to be or not to be too. But cheers for heads up pal.
