| As has been pointed out, basic errors let us down but if you don't put a platform down, you are always going to struggle.
Thought Arona playing at loose and thinking he had to pass it most of the time, rather than running hard and straight was a giddy mistake.
6-4 with about 5 minutes left in the first half, would have taken that at half time, with the wind at our backs in the second half but a couple of avoidable errors meant we were chasing the game.
Frustrating but nothing that is out of our hands.
And I also thought England was MOM.

| On the way out I heard someone say "same old, same old " but I can't agree. As compared to last season we were much faster with ball in hand, better in defensive structures and seemed a fair bit fitter. I thought Miller didn't have a bad game at all - a lot of his attacking didn't actually create a break but he was certainly lively and made Widnes defence think. Where we did manage offloads and short passes with good support we made good progress. Wasn't often enough but it certai ly wasn't 5 forward drives and a kick, or passing the ball and hoping someone else has an idea what to do.
We could have won it and I'm sure Brian Smith will be pointing out how to the lads. We weren't thrashed and Widnes have a pretty stable team but we do need to improve and I'm sure we will. Whether it will be enough only time will tell.

| I think smith will draw some positives from this game...
The fitness levels were much better.and apart from the slack second half try we let in ...the last 25 I thought we tackled well. We missed some opportunities with our attack in their 20,but I'm afraid we are going to have to be a bit more patient .im hoping this will come with the more games they play together.remember our half backs are a new combination!!
individual errors at vital times is the reason I think we lost. Going in 18 4 down instead of 12 4 left us just too much to do,
This was the first game, and there will be a few more go under the bridge before we see some cohesion...but you can't fault the effort.
The mistakes cost us the game rather than Widnes playing us off the park like they did last time out
We play the six fingered ones next (who picked up injuries today)hopefully we will see some improvements in this game.

| The one big thing was the players are at least fit enough this year and not blowing out their backsides after 20 mins and they never gave up the ghost. Last season we imploded big style it don't look like we will this we would have had this one if not for silly errors cut those out and we wont have a bad side with a bit of work

| I thought we were as good as Widnes today on the whole, not much between the sides. What cost the game was the pass from Johnston just before half-time, followed by BJB's howler early in the second half.
If that Wakefield shows up all season, I won't be complaining too much. Remember too that last year, we were world beaters after two games. Can't read too much into anything this early.

Widnes did not get out of third gear today Slugger it was very poor indeed. We may beat sides through effort if the other side doesn't turn up but that's it.

| Just because Betts says it doesn't make it true.
We tackled them and slowed them down. That's why they didn't play better. They didn't choose not to play better.
Their tries came from our mistakes. It's not like they bust us every time they got the ball.
They were good enough and we helped them. That's all.

| Taking into consideration the poor weather with the wind and freezing conditions I thought that BJB had a poor game, he made a couple of errors from kicks (which is expected with todays conditions) his pass selection/choosing not to pass the ball was poor and I really think he is out of his depth at this level at fullback. He doesn't seem as fluent when joining in the attack and these days fullbacks play as an extra attacking pivot. I'd give him a run and see if things change but if not I'd personally be looking at Tansey to slot in at 1.
Thought Arona was our best player on the field, great footwork and strong in his carries although England bar a few brain farts in defence giving away a few penalties was also a handful. Lyne was also solid today, he always seems to be a scapegoat but played well today especially in defence. I can't wait to have Simon back and firing on all cylinders as last season he was our go to forward who had plenty of acceleration and aggression which got us on the front foot. I also really hope that Finn and Miller can combine quickly as our attack sometimes was panicky.

| Coaching didn't cost Trinity that game. Individual errors did. It was a million miles away from the shambles of last season. The defence was generally good and it was noticeable the players rushing to each other to congratulate excellent defensive work. Still plenty to work on, Anthony Tupou looked unfit so hopefully will kick on the more games he has. Miller needs to get back to running at defences, his game isn't about creating opportunities for others. There is still a lack of composure at key times which result in unforced errors which unfortunately cost the team dearly today.

| Basic errors killed Trinity as has been said, I thought we were second best in most departments but for the basic errors we still could have won.
2 observations Widnes were awful defending around the ruck, a hooker worth his salt would have killed them, I think Moore plays we win. Still don't get the hype about Johnston.

| Couple of basic, errors at key times that were punished by Widnes cost us.
Arona worked his nads off.
Miller looked alright, given a bit more time with Finn they'll both improve.
BJB other than the basic error looked fairly handy.
Johnstone - not sure on the lad. Yet to be convinced.
England - jury our although no doubt he will be a crowd favourite.
Widnes had several bodies in motion and with the settled Mellor and Brown pulling the strings will pick up their share of wins so no reason to be too down hearted, although with a bit more nouse in attack and discipline we could have taken them as they had their share of issues defending.

Agree, silly nervous errors and mistakes cost us big time. On the whole the defense was good, fitness has also improved since last year and on the whole a decent 2nd half but just not enough. Ateotd we could have won it, if a pass would have stuck and one of the errors cut out, so I don't buy for one second that Widnes didn't get out of 3rd gear or whatever Betts said, they weren't that good.
We looked like a side at times that's still figuring each other out, which hopefully will improve as they get more game time together.
Without picking anyone out there's a couple of places in the backs especially that I'd change for next game and tbh I bet B.Smith is still not 100% sure on his best 17 yet.
I think if Moore had been playing today he'd have been very useful, he'd have made some real ground from acting half back. Hopefully Simon's fit soon because we need that guys aggression out there. Agree about Miller, although he did alright today, his main strength is running at the defenses, try to look for some space & cause some doubt and overlaps
Someone mentioned in another thread about how quiet and nervous the crowd was. I agree and I bet the players picked up on it out there. It's strange because last year was a real one off turd of a year and it's almost as if people are holding their breath expecting the worst again.

It was on but it was a risky play and ultimately he gambled and we lost.
I don't get the 'not ready' comment on the back if it though. There were plenty of senior pros and former Australian internationals who forced a pass or dropped the ball. Are they not ready either?!

Correct desmond, the gap was there for BJB,I just think Tom run him out and could have let it go a bit earlier.I think there may be a little slip involved.Simple errors cost us yesterday.

| Watch the replay of Johnstones pass, it's on but he loses his left leg right at the point that he's passing the ball and that causes the pass to be poor.
Just a bit of bad luck and a bit of technique combined but it can happen to anyone.

I don't think it was on Avenger. Their number 10 was rushing up to cream BJB.
He needed to pass a few steps earlier or not at all.
I also noticed it was England at fault for their try under the post. He rushed out of the line but went for the ball instead of Brown. That gave them a 2-1 which you took well.
Small things but they are the difference.

We can agree to differ on whether its on or not, my main point was the reason the pass was poor.
Johnstones job when kick returning is to get infield to the edge of the oppositions immediate kick chasers and tie in with his full back or wing from the other side, he did that and the play was to hit BJB with a catchable pass.

| On another note, why don't players wear proper studded boots anymore? So many players were slipping and falling over yesterday and from what I could see the majority were wearing moulded boots or those useless blades. In dry weather fine but when it's like a peat bog a bit more grip would be helpful.

| It was indecision that caused Johnston to throw the pass that arguably took the game away from us. You could see that he couldn't decide whether to pass or not, telegraphing it as he did so, and by the time he did pass it, the play was no longer on.
I can understand the temptation to try and put BJB in a gap, and he'll soon learn that if in doubt, don't. He knew he'd messed up straight away. These things happen.

I agree with you on this, IMO it's laziness!
When I played it was regular to see players check the playing surface and weather on arrival at the ground and then take a stud spanner and swap the studs in their boots to something more appropriate. Some carried two pairs of boots in their bag and even had the extra pair at pitch side.
As a coach I'd be tearing players a new one if they constantly slipped over and didn't do something about their footwear in order to fix the issue.

I do agree the slip made it a bad pass. Which was unfortunate. But that is what will hold him back from achieving his full potential if he can't eradicate those errors in his game. Small but important.

| Johnstone got his timing wrong and BJB's hands were not good enough to salvage the situation. Not sure about BJB at fullback yet but he needs to be given time there, as does young Tom on the wing, the lad is still learning his trade. My worry is though that despite apparently working hard to eradicate them in the off season he keeps making basic errors, either handling or positionally and ultimatley this will severely knock his confidence if it carries on. He will need managing very carefully by Smith.
