Correct. Without wanting to upset our Cas friends it amazes me they get away with those floodlights so close to the pitch with the boxes around them. No wonder Cas wingers steer clear of the touchline, they are really poor. Suppose we can gloat as our floodlights are the only modern thing about BV. |

It would be a best seller if there were pictures of the old ground and some of the past stars as well could be put into a book. I am sure there are loads of pictures of the ground from the early days out there. There are also some good shots of the ground from "This Sporting Life".

The picture with the south stand reminds me of a 1975 3rd round challenge cup tie v Hull KR. 14000 crammed in to BV. I remember the roar each time we scored; amazing with stands on 3 sides. 27-10 to Trinity I think it ended with a semi-final defeat to Widnes at Odsal to follow.And the other post about incompetent management at Trinity over decades rings so true. The worst decision was pulling the South stand down before adequate plans were in place for the new stand. I recall attending a members meeting in the Unity Hall with my Dad and seeing the plans that included what is now Cats Bar. I hope the Newmarket plans go beyond the paper stage, unlike those! And more great memories from the West stand season ticket we had, centre, right at the back; a narrow victory v Barrow in the '79 cup final run, Trevor Skerrett diving over for the winner and an utter thrashing of Leeds in the 80-81 season when we should have won the league. Great days and I loved Belle Vue |

I remember that game Charlie, I was 10 at the time and I had been taken a few times by my dad too. It must have been a TV game because it was a Saturday and it was amazing seeing the ground packed to the rafters. I'm pretty sure we were drawn at home in every round, been wracking my brain to try and remember who we beat in the first 2 rounds, St Helens rings a bell and Featherstone but am not sure on that one. I'd like to own a comprehensive collection of all seasons results from the 1960s if anyone has such a list of results, teams played, scorers and cup runs I'd be most grateful. I've got loads of footage on video of games but in a lot of cases one season pales into another, certainly when I was younger and lived in Cheshire it was harder then to get to games. If I had a list of results season by season I'd be able to recall those great matches I went to when I was a lad. Hope someone can help. |

hello every body, this is my first post. i started reading the forum some time ago but i am only slowly coming to grips with computers. this bit about old belle vue finally made me pluck up the courage to try an entry. in the early 1960's the proceeds of 2 paper rounds allowed me to watch all the local clubs, trin cas and featherstone. i always found belle vue to be a place of wonderment then as a small kid. every thing about it seemed to affect the senses the team were fantastic from 1 to 13. the pitch always seemed the greenest of green and all the tries seemed to be scored from a long way out. but the one thing that set it apart from other grounds that i visited was the west stand. in those days i didn't even know it was called the west stand but it seemed in those days to rise almost cathedral like. in a way the old photo's have spoilt the memory a bit as i remembered it being much grander than that. i seem to remember the ornate fascia been all done in red white and blue. it always seemed to be full of men in camel hair coats and trilby hats with wives who had high beehive hairstyles and a bit too much make up on. it was one of my ambitions to sit in that stand when i got older but i never managed it before it got knocked down and i have always regretted it. i know most of you would like the new stadium but if i could have the old belle vue back with some more up to date facilities i'd take it in a heartbeat.

I agree. Couldn't give a toss about a posh new stadium other than for the fact without one we appear doomed. A couple of roofs to get some atmosphere and keep the rain off and i'd be happy |

I remember being in BV in the early 60's when there were nearly 28,000 in the ground! We were playing Wigan in the Challenge cup and they won 2nil!
The great South African winger Jan Prinsloo (My best ever winger) could have won the game for Trinity as he was put clear with only one Wigan player to beat and chose to try and use his speed on the wing instead of coming inside but he was put into touch!
How did they get 28,000 in the ground? well they only managed it because i sat on my dads shoulders!

Hello there
I found these gems of Belle Vue a while back – hard to believe that there used to be a cycling track round the ground, which accounts for old the old sunken terracing at the front.

I first attended Belle Vue in 1985 with my Dad and, having been handed my free programme (little realising that this equated to the desperate state the club was in), went through the turnstiles to the left of what seemed to be massive West Stand. I remember walking through the through the corridor at the back of it and also going under the stand. It was a match towards the end of the season and nobody seems to have been bothered. Apparently the stand used to have four chimneys at the rear.
When we came back for the start of the new season it was gone and the ground was even poorer for it.
The South Stand was already long gone with just the retaining wall there and I was told that it was because the houses behind weren’t getting enough light. I only found out the real reason years later. Wish I’d seen Belle Vue as the original four sided ground was.
At least we still have the oldest rugby league ground in the world (and doesn’t it show) and haven’t suffered the loss of a ground like at Halifax, Swinton or Oldham. I’d be happy just updating Belle Vue and have a 15,000 capacity with half standing, half seating, but that’s just me. Maybe the ground’s just in the wrong area for modern corporate needs with inadequate access and parking... |
