Oh come on Bren, its an event, it's a way of fans supporting the club and a way for the club to raise its profile and make a few quid. Some people like it, some don't but the more events we have the better IMHO, luckily you don't have to go to them so stop being so crusty

I'm all for the event - I was referring specifically to the squad numbers; and it was a genuine question - does it actually mean anything?!

Meet the 2020 Team is interesting .... knowing what number they have is hardly edge of the seat mad keen to witness stuff, the social stuff is good as is getting to see the new team members and catching up with the established ones

Tend to agree with you on this.
If the ethos is to chose the best players and those in form, then squad numbers should play no part in it and in that sense are meaningless.
I personally see no point in them - it must be a bit demoralising to be number 30 on the list.
I would simply announce the squad and number them 1-17 on the matchday.

Then you would't be able to have players names on shirts.

I personally think the squad numbers presentation night is more aimed at a younger demographic than us oldies.

Not really, but as some have mentioned its a way to get names on shirts and therefore money to be spent getting those names on the back of shirts.

I've also kind of thought of it as a way to try and predict what the coach is thinking about his startnig 17, but obviously this isnt 100% accurate (given some players request certain numbers).

Don’t you think it might be a very big deal for the young players who are collecting their squad number for the first time, showing to friends and family that they are on the way up?
