| Well, after being confident at half time, I ended up biting my nails all through the second half as updates by text came through from my mate Lee down at Cougar Park. A win's a win and it's very welcome but what on earth is going on with the second half crumble we seem to have developed? It better be sorted for the upcoming York game. Come on COUGARS!!!

| A win yes , a stunning beat anyone first half but what on earth is going on with this 2nd half
rubbish every match.... ?
Maybe it is the lack of leadership on the field...... Maybe the opposition 'suss out '
Our non changing game plan after the first 40 ......The predictable same old kick off every time ....
The same things that have been happening all season , the only thing diff' about tonight
is the fact we came away with the points to lift us from the bottom of the heap.
To give away so many points in the 2nd half is not on , but why waste my breath repeating
the same old comment .
Well done on getting a win but Thats it , nothing else except the second half was a disgrace.

| Quote ="Mr Churchill" it would really help to have a top-class goal kicker so that every penalty awarded in the opponents' half or certainly 40 metre area would result in an attempt at goal. This allows time for the players to compose themselves and agree the game plan for the next ten minutes. With the way penalties go it could result in say three successful penalties each half - which is in itself worth three tries a match.'"
It's as if somebody were listening...

| My first game in a long time.
First half, we were very good. But for the life of me, i cant understand why we didnt go for the kill. Worky were there for the taking, they were giving away penalties for fun. It was the chance to keep the pressure on and go for tries.
Second half Worky changed there game plan. It took us a little while to relies and get a grip of them.
From looking at that team, things can only get better.

We did build pressure in the first half. The combination of two pointers and tries just kept them on the back foot all the time.
They introduced a D/R halfback from Widnes in the second half who raised their momentum. As a result of the increased tempo we gave away penalties but for me the two knock-ons that led to tries nearly sunk us. That we lost such a lead is poor but that we were at least able to hang on under extreme pressure is a good sign.
A lot of the talk on their board is about D/R signings to keep them up - whatever happened to the "Cumbrian conveyor belt" Sides are starting to get desperate and it just isn't good for Rugby League. We played our academy lads agains Leigh yet Leigh played three very good young lads from Wigan. With D/R you just don't know which team you are going to face.

Scoring tries and maybe having one of theres in the sin bin could have built more pressure

Have agree with your last sentence.

Clubs dont need to have a conveyor belt. They can just rely on D/R.
You cannot blame clubs for taking this option.
I dont agree with it. Its a big step backwards by clubs outside S/L.

| Sorry Guess Who, I don't know where you are coming from with the decision to take two points
Since when was a penalty 10 yards out a guarantee of a try. The decision to take 2 points (more or less gauranteed from where the penalties were last night) as opposed to taking the risk of a probably best 1 in 4 chance of getting a try meant the decision was totally justified. Not only do you get the ball back, you are denying them the ball and making them defend. That period of play when we got the four penalties must have lasted about 12 minutes where Worky never saw the ball. If that isn't pressure I dont know what is.
Note the points difference at the end of the game ( 8 points - four penalties)

Not saying it wasnt pressure. I think there was a chance to use pressure in a better way.
Worky were on the backfoot.
The extra tackles, pressure, and demoralizing effect, before half time would have finished them. Instead they had enough time to come back. Which they very nearly did.

| Take two points every single time you are in kicking range is my definite view. avebullswon sets out the arguments well. How many times have you seen teams (inc Cougars) take a tap from a penalty when say only about ten yards out then spill the ball on the second tackle or so? What a waste. Take the points every time.

| How many times have you seen. A team keep attacking the try line and run away with a game, because the other team cannot live with that style of play.
It works both ways.

| There seems to be two points emerging on this topic, penalties and pressure and second half performance.
Firstly, the decision to take the two or not is horses for courses. Keighley currently are low on confidence and full of mistakes and the decision to keep the score board ticking over and put distance between themselves and Workington, considering they won, has to have been the right one. If the situation was different and they were scoring tries for fun then I'm sure the decisions would have been different.
The second half performance was a combination of a few things.
- Workington saw how Keighley were playing and their experienced players picked at our weaknesses, the main of which was choosing to target Parkinson's defending in the middle of the park. They ran over the top of him and made breaks or got quick play the ball and got a roll on... leading to the second point.
- A combination of forced mistakes and penalties allowed Workington to gain momentum.
- The D/R half back they had showed his quality and made a difference near the line, breaking us down when with roles reversed Keighley were well marshalled.
I think that a coach on the sidelines for Keighley should have been able to spot what Workington were doing and tried to change the defensive structure to suit. However they didn't but the fact that Keighley clung on will hopefully give them confidence to put some better performances together.

We have for some time been unable to cope with teams who raise their tempo through fast "play the ball". We seem unable to maintain a clean defensive line allowing breaks through the gaps. Unlike Fev, Leigh and Halifax we are poor at "legally" slowing teams down resulting in penalties against us.

I agree. As I've said in previous posts, Keighley's main issue is the contact area. We don't win the impact, control the tackle, wrestle and get numbers involved to slow down the tackle area legally. I think this is probably down to coaching partly but I also think that certain other teams benefit from Super League experience, partly through D/R but also partly through older players dropping down a league.
If you watch any good teams, they are built on their defence... anyone who watched Hull v Leeds last night would've seen a bit of a masterclass from Hull in how to win a game from a solid defensive base. You need to be ferocious and aggressive but also technically good at holding the man up and slowing down momentum.

| Agree, if my memory serves me correct there was much debate last season about Wigan's tactics in this area. They were dominating the ruck and slowing teams down.
I agree also that this is our area of weakness and maybe something JD offered more than Marchy maybe due his more recent SL experience. Equally as concerning for me is our lack of ability to read and nullify our oppositions game plan. It's clear they are sussing us out. I accept when Marchy is on the field it's maybe more difficult for him to see, but he relies on Glenn and Jeremy for this.
We also seem to suffer when Buster is off the field. Maybe it's not just his presence, but his organisation and influence?
