Might aswell retire tomorrow if it can't win that race!
Harbinger was sensational...I thought I'd worked the race out well with deciding to go with Cape Blanco. I know Workforce went on to win the Derby and they made excuses for the defeat to Cape Blanco but one of my number one rules in backing horses is sticking with one that has beaten it's opponent before. I thought it was a poor Derby Workforce won ( I know it won very well and broke the course record) but I didn't see him finishing in front of Cape Blanco today especially at the respective odds!
I thought the weight the 3 year olds got would be the deciding factor today, but for Harbinger to do that to a class field was unbelievable. Bet Ryan Moore is kicking himself tonight!
Keep an eye out for King Of Swords in the last at Ponte tomorrow, been following all season and will be winning very shortly without a doubt, tomorrow could well be the day....

| Wouldn't mind some of the 22/1 with Stan James about Shamalgan in that race Andy, good solid classic form although below par LTO in the Jockey-Club.

| Do both Mabait and Rio De La Plata get paid as winners? Think I'd have backed the latter if I'd had a bet today but didn't look a race to get too involved in.
While I was supposed to be working today I've drawn up a list of Golden Rules to follow in future which will hopefully make my decision making a bit better.

| So if I had twenty quid on Rio De La Plata at the sp 5/2, due to the dead heat and my stake being slashed to a tenner,
I would only receive thirty five back?

| What happens when the stake is halved though, do the bookies keep the other half for themselves?

| the stake isnt halved, the odds are halved
you get your stake back and half the winnings you would get for an outright win

Sadly your wrong...
The stake is halved not the odds, as it works in the bookies favour and yes Andym, the bookies keep the other half too.
So for example.. £20 at 4/1, which dead heats.
At half stake you get £10 at 4/1 = £50
At half odds you get £20 at 2/1 = £60
Hence the bookmakers use the half stake rule as it is in their favour along with many other rules...

Spot on.
I use the returns calcs to work out the returns as they can account for a DH or R4

| Galway 19:00 Mount Helicon 20/1 E/W Ballyhaunis 14/1 E/W
Had been waiting for Mount Helicon to run for a while then bloody missed it just come 2nd at 6/1 in its first race for 7 months hopefully will come on from that only 5yo and came 4th in French G2 and G3 races.
Ballyhaunis hadn't race for even longer when finish 9 lengths behind Bay Willow who boosted the form yesterday.

| Does anyone else expect not to see Workforce run again?
The Derby has obviously taken a lot out of him, as with a majority of other horses. Another bad run would knock his stud value down even further and, unless he wins a top all age race, it will hit his reputation badly.
Not as if Khalid Abdulla is short of good racehorses either.

Mount Helicon would be a cracking bet, but not off top weight for me.

But it is also the correct application of the rule as it is the stake which is relevant and not the odds. In a two-way dead-heat you have half a winner and therefore half of the stake is settled at the applicable odds and half the stake is lost.

| Tomorrows Gordon Stakes looks a cracking group 3 and as wide open as you like. All bar Circumvent and Film Score hold St Leger entries. Just a shame Godolphin's interesting looking Simon De Montfort isn't running for whatever reason. Wouldn't like to try and pick a winner but would like to see Dandino win another. Not a race to get too involved in unless there is a strong whisper.
Lord Shanakill @ 8/1 E/W for the Betfair Cup. Had a nice confidence booster at Chester, and Henry Cecil is a master at giving a horse a confidence booster to get his head in front before moving on to something better.
Stone of Folca to finally break his maiden in the Molecomb. Ran two blinders in defeat at Royal Ascot and his trainer reckons he is the fastest horse he has ever trained, rumoured to be going for the Nunthorpe to try and take advantage of the weight allowance if he does the business here. Almost unheard of opposing the Hannon runners in a race like this but I reckon my selection can frank the Ascot form in front of Zebedee.
In the same race, Lord of the Stars looks to have a little bit of E/W value for Ralph Beckett, at 9/1. On the upgrade and should be one to watch.
