| Quote ="Robbo4"You think? Tournament play basically revolves around getting all your money in first and then hoping your hand stands up. Decent point towards the end, but i disagree about 'getting your money in first' in a torny and hoping it stands up. Its all about survival in a tourny and winning the right pots. yes there is luck involves but no more than a cash game.
Just like the better players will prevale over a period in a cash game, so will the players over several tournies in the long run

I see where you are coming from but in a tournament situation you do get some muppets who will go all-in and get lucky simply because they think they are not playing with real money and are prepared to risk it. If they had say £200 of their money sat in front of them they wouldn't do it.

| in tourney play i have been known to fold aces pre flop as not getting involved would cement my top 3 place, last night i was playing a £10 6 player double up game and 4 people left, two guys over 3k each me and other player have 900 blinds are 400 and 200.
so two short stacks fold chip leader raises all in (with ak suited)
And 2nd chip leader calls with pocket queens.
Now with the blinds so high me and other player would have to have doubled up pretty soon and taken a chance with i.e rag ace.
So my point is tourney play is not about getting your money in first and hoping it comes through there is a lot more skill managing positions, blinds, etc imo

Does anyone think it would be a good idea to run a private tourney on a site for rlfans?

If we got a few players together then yes. Even if it was just £5 buy in it would be fun and there would be bragging right at stake.
I play on Full Tilt mainly but also have PKR and Victor Chandler accounts.

Seen that suggested somewhere before, can't remember where though.
Good idea. I'd definitely be up for it.

| I'd play. Only really play on William Hill nowadays as they like giving me free money from time to time.
I love playing forum tournaments, you always get the forum "expert" slagging off other peoples play afterwards after they got knocked out early

I'd definitely be up for that... as long as there was money involved of course!
I use PKR mainly but I have Full Tilt, Pokerstars, BetFred and William Hill.

| Does anyone here play live as well then? I play in a redtooth league but only really go for the cash game that they have after the tournament.
I've been playing at the G Casino in Manchester the last couple of weeks on the cash tables. Plenty of muppets in there! A couple of weeks back I had AQ suited. Raised to £6 pre-flop (blinds £1/£1) got called by 10 7 off suit. Flop comes down Q 6 3... I bet £12 on the flop. This guy calls me with nothing. On the turn comes a 7, I bet £20 he calls. River 10... couldn't believe it. I lost all my money in that hand. I ended up going to the cash machine as there were two really bad players at the table and one guy who was on tilt. Sat down with £40 and ended up leaving £180 in profit. Won a huge pot with A high straight off the 10 7 guy of about £150 then busted him a couple of hands later

That backs up my point about tournament play, some muppet will call you with nothing and luckily hit and your out. As that was a cash game you could continue in the game and your better play came through in the end and made the money back and more.
Me and group of friends set up our own league and we play once a week. The prize money is split between final league standing and then a final one-off table with your starting chips dependant on how many points you accrue during the league.

Yeah if you play in tournaments, especially MTT's you're going to need to get really lucky and win lots of coin flips to go on to win... That's why I play more cash games, they are much more profitable.

In MTT's if you get a big hand early on (big pocket pair/AK,AQ) you should get your chips in. You will more than likely get a call as you, a: get a lot of idiots, and b: have a lot of people who want to steal a march on the opposition but don't have the patience to wait for a good hand. Sometimes it will go against you, that is Poker, but in my experience you won't do well in an MTT by playing passively and building up slowly. You want to get in front early and then use your big stack to bully people out of smaller pots.
The pros no doubt would say I'm wrong but thats the way I play and if you do get lucky early on you will money more often than not.

The number of people won't matter too much as long as we have enough.
To set up a private tourney we will need someone who has unlocked the reward to create them I think e.g. on PKR you have to be a silver member.
Is anybody high up enough to set it up??

I think its the same on quite a few sites, you need a certain number of points to be able to create.

Hmm tend to disagree with pretty much all of what you've said regarding Cash games and tournaments really. Out of interest how long have you been playing the game and what stakes do you play at?
You'll always get muppets calling you for whatever reason be it irrationally with poop cards or a 'premium hand' in either situation. Unless a tournament is a turbo format or a cheap re-buy tournament it is always going to be about slowly building your stack, any kind of deep stack tournament that's not a fiver or whatever to buy into and that's what you'll read in any literature written about tournament play.
Also, regarding cash games I've not met anyone who is aiming to make a profit every hand. The rationale for most is to just finish a session in profit whether that consists of half an hour in a casino our multi-tabling all night at home. Often raising regularly and just looking for that one big pot from the fish on the table or the aggressive person who always tries to steal at the cut off when there's been nothing but a dodgy utg raise or something.
Quote ="Robbo4"I see where you are coming from but in a tournament situation you do get some muppets who will go all-in and get lucky simply because they think they are not playing with real money and are prepared to risk it. Not sure what kind of level tournament you're drawing this comparison to. Either way, if a player is just really aggressive in general or even just holding their favourite hand then they're more than happy to bet with that kind of money. I'm guessing you have little experience of cash games though because the dynamics of it are so incomparable to tournament play they may as well be different card games.
