It's difficult and it'll come down to what the rules actually say.

A divot is completely different from something thrown on to the field by supporters. Divots on the field can appear naturally so they should be ignored. Players creating divots on the field to disrupt the oppositin should be punished.

From the clips I've seen it's difficult to see whether the deflection was off the ball or Glenn Johnson.

Seen as the ref let it stand id guess that the rules state its a goal. Divots are made by keepers for goal kicks etc. For me Reina has dropped a ballock not stamping on em all, as most keepers tend to do. Just one of them freak occurrences.

Whether Reina or the Liverpool defenders should've done something depends on how long it'd been there. If it was thrown on the field when Sunderland were coming up the field they can't be expected to ignore the attack and clear away stray beachballs in the area.

The ref could have just made an error.

The problem with just allowing play to go on is that it could mean supporters up and down the country throwing tennis balls and more beach balls onto the field to help their side.

I believe thats a replay pal. Looking at the video again im pretty confident that the balloon is a beach ball and has been there for a while. It isn't moving at all so unless a sudden gust has moved it in the build up to the goal its been there for a while. Also the fact it weighs enough to have changed the direction of the ball says to me its not been moved by the wind etc and that it must of been there for a while. Even if all my twaddle above is wrong, i really don't see how it can be disallowed

i was suprised it changed the direction of the ball. i was listening to 5 live on the way back from a game today and Graham Poll said that maybe it should have been disallowed.

not particuallly bothered though gives Liverpool a long way to catch back up on winning the league 4 defeats this early is never good.

Just got back from the game.

First half we could and probably should have been four or five up, berbatov had two screamers saved. Owen looked good as did valencia and giggs.

Second half we were very poor and were hanging on by the skin of our teeth. Glad for the 3 points though.
