| Why are there set weights for boxing ? I have just watched sky sports news and James Degale has starved him self in order to shed 6lb to make a 12 stone limit, they then go on to say that by the time that he fights tomorrow night he will be back to nearer 13 stone. Is this allowed? if so what is the piont? Cheers.

| This is perfectly within the rules. Ricky Hatton used to put on huge amounts of weight after the weigh in.
They used to weigh fighters on the day of the fight but they stopped this for health and safety reasons. When you lose a lot of weight quickly as boxers do before a fight it's mainly water. When someone's dehydrated it makes them more vulnerable to brain injury when punched as the brain shrinks slightly and there's less fluid between the brain and the skull to absorb the impact of a punch.

| Both fighters (if they've any sense) will put on weight after the weigh in, and therefore it will probably weigh about the same when they step into the ring, be it 8lbs heavier than the 12 stone they were yesterday.
