| From the official site:
Quote Wigan Warriors can confirm that Assistant Coach Lee Briers will sadly leave the Club at the end of the 2022 season to take up an opportunity in the NRL with the Brisbane Broncos.
Briers joined Wigan in October 2021 as part of the Club’s new Coaching Team and has had a significant impact since.
Warriors Executive Director, Kris Radlinski, said: “Lee came to see myself and Matt a few days ago in a fairly emotional state. He said that a dream move to Australia has come up for him and he feels as though he can’t turn it down. In our original meeting with him many months ago, he stated that the NRL was a dream and we knew that if an opportunity came up, we wouldn’t stand in his way.
“In a short space of time, the Club and Lee have had an impact on each other. Lee has embraced the town, the fans and the players and staff. He brings great energy and enthusiasm to work every day. His passion for Rugby League is unique.
“When Lee first told me, I was sad as I know the impact that he has had on the Club. When I reflected further, I was happy for Lee. When somebody achieves their dream, you have to put self-gratification to one side. I am glad Lee came to Wigan, it has been a joy to watch him work. Now, he has a job to do in the next few months. I am sure every Wigan fan will join me in thanking him and wish him the very best of luck. Lee will continue to be a great ally for us on the other side of the world.
“I do not feel as though Lee’s journey with Wigan is over and the way he has conducted himself over his time tells me that he will one day return.”
Speaking to Wigan TV, Briers explained his decision: “It’s come out of the blue. I’ve always had an ambition to go to Australia to test myself and an opportunity has arisen to go to the NRL. Whilst I am excited to move, it is a bittersweet moment because I absolutely love it at Wigan. It’s been a tremendously tough decision to take but it’s one if I didn’t take, I would probably regret.
“If somebody had asked me 18 months ago, you are going to go to Wigan and enjoy it as much as you did, I would have just laughed. From minute one of coming here, I’ve felt wanted and welcome. The coaching staff have taken me in, and we’ve bonded – it’s probably the tightest coaching staff I’ve been involved in. It’s been a super tough decision, it’s gut-wrenching.
“I understand that this opportunity only arises because of the playing group and the staff. It wouldn’t have happened if the boys didn’t buy into what we do as coaching staff – there’s massive credit to the boys. This group of players are by far the most close-knit group of players who want to learn every day. They are unbelievable. They’ve taken me in, trusted me and they’ve delivered. Also, Matt Peet gives me that trust. Me and Matt go further than just coaching. When my mum passed away, he was the first one to come and grab me. He’s always had the trust in me and hopefully I’ve repaid my bit.
“I’ve actually loved coming into training each morning. Some people call it work – this isn’t work when you love it so much. People will say if you love it so much why will you leave, it’s not a case of that, it’s a case of wanting to go and experience something which has been burning inside of me since I was 15 years of age when I first toured Australia for the North West Counties.
“I keep catching myself thinking – I’m a St Helens fan through and through and I worked at Warrington for 25 years, but this is the place that has genuinely grabbed me without a shadow or a doubt. This place is something special and I’ll hold this dear to my heart.”
Head Coach, Matt Peet, added: “Lee has made a really positive impact on the Club since he joined us, not just with his knowledge and his Coaching expertise, but most importantly, him as a bloke.
“I’m sad to see him go and to see his family go but I’m also really pleased for him to get this opportunity, I know it’s an ambition that he’s had for a long time.”
Everyone at the Club wishes Lee all the best for the future after the 2022 season.'"

| Big loss to Wigan that. Its clear to see the impact he has had on the attack and the likes of Harry Smith in particular. A very talented young British coach.
Credit to Wigan also for breaking the status quo of promoting from within. Its something I wish that Saints would do more often rather than the "jobs for the boys" mentality.

| Was hoping it might not be true when somebody mentioned it on here a few days ago. I get the sense he’s played a huge part in this season and the togetherness of everyone. I’ve full faith in Matt Peet to guide us through that loss but it’ll be a challenge I think.

| Sad news as he's been a shrewd signing. It does however open an opportunity for another Assistant Coach, likely from within.....(Tommy)?

If he plays on its not feasible. Would like us to get someone maybe in for a year or part time maybe Deacon? Then promote Tommy. I do like the idea of getting a character like Briers on board. A great player with a real rugby brain

If Martin Gleeson gets let go from England RU (that seems to be something Jones likes to do), then I'd swoop for him. He was noted as making a real difference during his time at Salford.

| I was told about it a couple of months ago. I know from a relation of mine that it'd always been Briers ambition to have a go in Aus. Good luck to him, he's done a fabulous job at Wigan and is well liked/respected by all the staff, I really hope he does well.

Didn’t know who’s posted it but hoped it might not be true. A real shame that he’s off.
Hoping for some positive posts soon around incomings

| His arrival wasn't greeted with universal joy by Wigan fans, but surely all will regret his departure. It's clear he's achieved a lot. A job made a little easier, of course, when you have the likes of Field and French at your disposal, but nevertheless it's clear Briers has done a fine job so far at Wigan, and the high regard Peet holds him in.
Now to complete the job this season!

Warrington jokes aside it would be good to give him his first SL title as a send off. Something tells me he’ll be in Aus awhile

I think it will be a huge loss to the club and Peet who's still finding his feet as head coach I suspect when Briers returns it'll be as Warrington head coach,so next may then

He’ll be back in the Wigan fold at some point you feel.

I feel like this too.
I wish both Lee and Bevan well - they both came to Wigan as outsiders and yet have been far more loyal than many homegrown elements, and yet to lose both at the same time is a huge blow. Let's not gloss over that. It's two thirds of our devastating new attack.

Couldn’t agree more.
I’m bored senseless of the talent drain from British RL to Aus & RU.
I don’t blame Briers - or the likes of Charnley, Mossop, TL, Sam, Gildart, Sutton, Bateman, Williams before him. I’d run off to the money 101 times out of 100 if I was offered the type of opportunity (money).
I’m just absolutely turned off by it and it’s one of the reasons I stopped paying to watch RL a few years ago, now.
I still pop on here from time to time. I’ll watch all the big games and celebrate with a smile from home. You don’t just forget your love for the club, I suppose.
All credit to you guys who put your love for the club first and keep paying, I’ll never question your loyalty and probably right to an opinion before the likes of me who don’t go anymore but I’m so turned off by RL these days it’s sad.

You make it sound like everyone on here goes to games purely because of loyalty and obligation. Iv loved it this year - its been brilliant. Players/coaches leave and players/coaches come in - it'd just part of the game. Wigan always manage to bring in good replacements.

| Will be sad to see him go but the obvious replacement would seem to be Tommy which I assume would also mean his retirement that in turn would free up a quota spot.
I heard a podcast sometime ago with Sam Tomkins and he couldn't praise Tommy enough for his knowledge of the game and his coaching potential.
Hopefully we can give Briers the send off that his commitment to the club this season deserves.
