Sign him back up!
I have to say there’s some extremely moving scenes at Headingly. Barrie Mac breaking down on and to hear Rob’s voice is just terribly moving. Sad circumstances but this shows the best of the RL world.

| There’s been some heated rivalry with Leeds over the years and I’m sure we’re well down their fans list of favourite teams, as they are ours but you couldn’t help be moved by the scenes of the whole day. Rob Burrow is a man who was and is universally admired across the sport. It was a fitting day for a bloke like that. It brought it home just how devastating this diagnosis is for him but also just how much the sport thinks of him.

| Some very emotional scenes but a fitting turnout, both from the fans and everyone taking part, for a player who graced the game as he did. A class player and, from all accounts, a class bloke too.

| I tell you what it’s no surprise the all dominating Leeds team did as well as they could, they’re not team mates but brothers. It’s a life long bond what they have and has to be the envy of other sports clubs around the country.

| He did very well, thought Kyle Leuluai put in some great shots too...he was a very underrated player for Leeds and remember reading that Wigan had tried to sign him at one point.
Great event.

| Well Fielden put in better drives and hits in defence than our front rowers did last year. He looked strong and aggressive.
I think he actually retired too early. Some bad advice maybe at the time? I am sure he could of done another 2/3 years.

Was it an injury that ultimately retired him? I always thought we should have kept him for another few seasons. He did a job and did it well IMO

| Too many injuries towards the back end for Fielden. On his day he was one of the best and most entertaining players to watch.
A shame he seemed to have lost the fire in his belly for much of his Wigan career - I think there were other things going on off the field for him at the time if I recall correctly.

He had just recovered from an injury and then got a knee infection and called it a day IIRC.

| Missed practically all of 2011 with various injuries only playing in the first game
Missed all of the 2012 season apart from 1 game at the end of 2012 due to injuries.
His contract had expired and he was 33 at that point.
Went to huddersfield and played no more than 10 games then retired.
Correct decision to let him go
Although 2007 was a bit of a damp squib for him I do think that he improved 2008/2009 & 2010 and he definitely deserved his end of season selection for GB 2010.
Whilst not hitting the heights of his Bradford career his 2006 performances and 2010 were very good IMO
And even though 2007/8/9 werent brilliant he still was very durable, steady and played 30plus games every year and his stats for carries/tackles/metres we could only dream of from some of our props of the last couple of years.
When we were under the cosh, under our own sticks he was always first to put his hand up and take a carry.
So for that I will always think of him highly.

I was elated when he got his international recall, it was so well deserved for me and I completely agree with your assessment. In all honesty I’d forgotten the circumstances of him leaving us. For me he still ranked up there as one of the best props we’ve had at Wigan. Wore his heart on his sleeve, stood up and did the tough stuff and never took a backwards step.

| Stu Fielden in his Bradford pomp was as frightening as watching Shane Webke.
Best British prop of all of SL for me, based only on Bradford and first wigan season form.
Obviously his longevity not a patch on others such as peacock etc. At his best though, he was better imo

| The best super league prop in my mind was Jamie Peacock, even the Aussies were scared of him,i remember when he sorted Willie Mason out in the Great Britain test match.I was always surprised he never went to the NRL as he would have been as big a hit as Morley.Fielden was the last true 80 minute prop forward as they now seem to be programmed to do between 15-25 minutes, maybe George Burgess can do 60 minutes, here's hoping

He didn’t sort him out though did he. It’s a myth. After mason sorted fielden out with ease, peacock runs in and him and mason exchange a couple of punches until mason trips over another player

I’d agree with you there. Both Fielden and Peacock in their pomp were terrifying. Peacock edges it in terms of longevity and consistent form but let’s not forget that although Fielden declined from 06 he was still a tough nut and would be generally one of the first names on the team sheet such was his reliability. You could I suppose also put that down to a poor pack at the time but my opinion is the former.

What utter nonsense. Fielden should never have gone on that tour with his personal circumstances. But it is testament to his character he did have a read
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-league/50057123
Also Mason got what he deserved massively off JP thats why he bottled it and took it out on Long as he wasnt getting back in that mixer. He also went missing the week before when Kidwell give him it

I read this when it came out last year and what a superb article. It really hammered home and made you realise the actual trauma he was going through and explains why his form, up until 2010 anyway, was “solid enough”. In other words not setting the world alight but not downright awful either, average if you will.
That for me changed my whole opinion on Fielden during that period and why he’ll always be one of the toughest players we’ve ever had at Wigan. At the time I remember thinking and posting on here actually how awful he was, how we should sack him etc etc without a care in the world to what was really going on. Sometimes as fans it’s easy to forget that.
