Six of us are coming up to Wigan next Saturday staying at The Brocket. Haven't been to Wigan for a few years so could anyone kindly refresh my memory with regards the best places to get a drink? I recall the Bowling Green and The Anvil being decent but my memory is a little hazy otherwise. We'll be arriving at The Brocket for 12 and going from there.

Pubs I'd say are worth a visit if you're heading down Wigan lane and through the town centre-

Bowling Green
Millstone
John Bull
Anvil
Raven
Berkley Square
Wigan Central (a new real ale pub just under the bridge and left when walking past Wigan North Western station towards the ground).

Avoid Harry's bar and the last orders!!

I must say I am looking to giving the new Wigan Central a try on Good Friday. Is it any good?

Only been once but enjoyed it. Good selection of ales on and a good atmosphere. The place has been busy pretty much since it opened.

It's excellent, although not very big inside, so you might find it packed. If you like your cask ales, you'll love it! Fascinating old railway themed decor and a great selection of beers and ciders. We love it in there.

As a CAMRA member I can safely say I like my ales. Look forward to giving it a whirl. Can see it being busy on GF though!

Where can you get a decent pie?

Brisk walk on a cold night there after game last night. Really nice pub, great selection of beer at prices which seem very cheap ( I guess) to anyone not from the North-West. My son, who lives in London, home of the six quid pint

Safe to say that The Bowling Green has gone somewhat downhill since my last visit. How long has The Royal Oak been closed? Decent trip.

Yep, the BG has been going downhill for a good while now, sadly. The Royal Oak has been shut a couple of years now, but the ex-landlord has opened a new micro pub called Doc's Symposium, down near the park. Good little place, too, nice selection of beers and some lovely upmarket barsnacks at reasonable prices.
