| Solid game lacked a bit of physicality, but his delivery from the ruck was outstanding. Best I have seen from a Wigan 9 since Martin Hall. Clean crisp accurate and quick off both hands.
Williams was poor in the same department but early days for both.

We must have watched a different player. Most of his passes arrived at head height and I felt they were quite lofted, not at all crisp.

| I thought Tomkins was pretty disappointing. His defence was awful in terms of physicality. I don't think he won a single collision in the entire match. His passing was poor, his decision making wasn't great and whenever he ran with the ball he stopped momentum because he had no strength to trouble the defence and couldn't get a quick play the ball. I think his only positive moment was a good spot from dummy half to go down the short side in the build up to Farrell's try.
Williams' passing wasn't spot on all the time but it's an unfamiliar role for him. In general though he was quicker than Logan and his defence was far better as he had much more luck dominating the tackles. Williams has far more ability than Tomkins in general.

| No it will confirm you are both wrong.
His delivery for me was great tonight. Straight off the deck, at the line and accurate.
As I said in my original post he lacked the physicality, but his delivery fore was outstanding.

| Tomkins very disappointing, still not a Super League player. Just too slow in attack, barely takes a line on, and in defence is found very lacking.
Williams was not perfect but it is not his preferred position. He was quicker, less telegraphed and stood up better in defence.

Me too. I am working tomorrow (ireally should go to bed!) and so won't have the chance but if you do, watch the height at which most of his passes reach the player.

your not..he had a solid game.
Passing was good, got more confident as the game went on and started running then passing, a good hooker performance imo.
Tackling was spot on, text book most of the time, not physical but thats his build, he'll be better when he bulks up.
Still only young for a 9 and i am happy with him as long term replacement for MM

| Watch the first try of the second half. Logan scoots, takes on the line and passes to Pettybourne who continues the play until Farrell finishes the move with the try. Quality work from Tomkins.
Some people , on here, don't like Logan because he isn't Sam. They expect him to have all the skills of his brother.

| I think it was a mixture of both. Majority of his distribution was good but too many occasions smith was catching the ball behind his head. You can forgive the odd one but it happened too often for my liking.
The most frustrating thing for me is his speed of getting the ball out and decision making. There were a number of times where our line was set and he'd take a step then pass which gives their defence that extra split second or he'd go blind when it wasn't on. You need to listen to your halves.
Overall a decent but frustrating at times performance. 6/10

| He needs to work hard on his defensive technique IMO. He goes too high for somebody who lacks size and he can't keep doing that.
Sam Powell is still in pole position to play as a back up hooker when he's back unless Tomkins can turn his form round.

Not sure 'that's his build' is a good enough reason to be weak in tackles. McIlorum isn't a big player but he's dominant in tackles. George Williams isn't a big player but he was more dominant in tackles last night. Winning the collision is an important part of the game, especially for a hooker who has to make 30-40+ tackles per game. That's 30-40+ tackles where the attacking side get on the front foot and the markers are scrambling to get back.
If a hooker is too small to make big tackles then forwards are just going to run at him again and again and make easy yards and that's what Rovers did.
When they had a try chalked off for a forward pass the gap was only created because Tomkins joined a 2 man tackle when the player was already stopped and tried to dominate the tackle by forcing the player over, only to make a mess of it, get himself on the wrong side of the ruck and leaving a huge gap in defence.

| If you look for errors, every player comes up with them at some point.
I think Tomkins distribution was really good. Some of the runs need better timing and that will come but you can't just lay that on Tomkins.
I thought it was clear that his defensive task was to harass and clamp the ball or come in as third man as often as he could, as putting on big hits and getting injured would not be good and everyone would soon be ripping him to bits as to why he was so reckless. I think that he has a great future here at Wigan and hope that he stays and develops to the potential that he has shown.
I am sorry but I really don't rate Powell at 9, he is probably the most natural 6 we have had for years, but should never get picked at 9 in front of a fit Tomkins.

| I really don't understand what some of you have against Logan.
To suggest that Williams was better than him last night was absolutely laughable as most of Williams' passes were head hight or behind the players, which to me is poor considering he is a half-back. Logan was involved in a lot of tackles, and didnt miss many, yes he doesn't dominate the tackle, but not all players do, Liam Farrell didn't/doesn't, Thornley doesn't but they don't get called for it.
No he is not world-class, but he is still only 21, McIlorum wasn't the great player he is now when he was 21. And Logan's distribution was pretty good last night, better than Williams', and probably no worse than McIlorum's. The point I do agree with is his decision making isn't great yet as he doesn't scoot enough from dummy half and attack the line.

| Had a good game last night. His delivery was spot on for the most part. Not perfect by any means, but then, who is? Thought this showed when Williams came on whose delivery from dummy half isn't nearly as good.

Spot on. MM had plenty of critics at the same stage in his career, and I can think of few, if any hookers who are the finished article at 21 years of age. OK he's not as aggressive in defence as MM, but on the other hand he's not the penalty machine that MM is.
