I'll believe it when I see it. When was the last time we had a SL game called off? If ever?

| Our last First Team bad weather postponement was January 1991, a cup tie at Salford that was due on Grandstand. Got postponed again in the midweek and ended up being played 8 days late on a Sunday.
The last home match to fall foul of weather was against Hull on 29th December 1985. That was went the clubs brand new undersoil heating system switched on the first time failed!
Of course their have been numerous postponements for cup tie clashes plus 1 for pitch revonation in 2008 and one last year for the World Club Challenge.

Are you sure? I know we had a televised first round cup tie with Castleford postponed in January 1991(because I was meant to go) and it was replayed on the Tuesday night at a still snowy Wheldon Road where we then produced what Shaun Edwards himself described as "one of the greatest performances in his whole Wigan career".
Instead of that game the BBC resorted to showing a tedious Leeds/ Ryedale York walkover from memory where John Gallagher was star of the show....

The Salford one was 1991-92, Cas one was year before 1990-91.

| I don't like having to correct Bilko, but I'm pretty certain that the Bradford home league game was called off in January 1991. Apparently someone forgot to switch on the undersoil heating ( again!).
The upshot was the game had to replayed later in the season and fans old enough will remember it became part of the Mission Impossible when Wigan played 4 games in 6 days in April: Cas on Sunday, Widnes on Tuesday, Bradford on Thursday and Leeds away on Saturday. They came back from 18-2 down early in the 2nd half to snatch an 18-18 draw against Bradford then clinched the title 2 days later against Leeds. Ellery tore his hamstring in that game but still played in the Challenge Cup Final a fortnight later when Wigan beat Saints ( again!)

| That Bradford 18-18 game in 1991 was one of the best matches I've been to, incredible atmosphere and we just couldn't snatch the win to take the title, Skerrett played out of his skin despite finding out that night that he was suspended and would miss Wembley.
In Bilko's defence I think the reason it got moved to April and was part of our fixture pile up was not due to weather but because Bradford had played in the Regal Trophy Final on the weekend we were meant to play this game (they knocked us out in the quarters I think en route)

| I'm almost certain it was because of a frozen pitch - the episode is mentioned in a book ( Mission Impossible?) which relates the events of the 1990-91 season, including this story about a very embarrassed groundsman who had forgotten to turn on the undersoil heating and the massive repercussions it almost had 3 months later.

| You may be right but I always thought the non switching on of under soil heating was a Boxing Day game that did end up going ahead but with a rock hard frosty pitch. It probably happened more than once!

| That's true as well - very late 80's or very early 90's and Wigan hammered Saints (again!). You could see the frost on certain parts of the pitch.

A little voice from the memory bank is telling me that the match that you talk about that should have been called off was a New Years Day match against Warrington.
A mate and myself went on the ground about 1-45 and the Ref and the various officials of both teams where wandering about the field trying to dig an heel in ,some trying more than others.
We went into the bar on the popular side thinking that the match must be called off it was so cold, at 2-30 someone came in the bar and said the match was on.
We left the bar and walked down the pop side to the Whitbread stand and the gate in the corner from the terraces (to let them get machinery on) to the pitch was open, so me and my mate had a wander on to test it and we have never seen a pitch as hard . In that corner it was like concrete and was already going white with new ground frost.
What makes this match stand out in my mind was Edwards went from the hallway line and scored in that corner and a young second row from the Wire chased him all the way. When Edwards put the ball down he turned round and gave the young lad a pat on the back in appreciation for chasing him all the way.
It was certainly the hardest pitch I have ever seen when a match actually took place.

If a re-arranged date fell later then you should join rogue in owd git corner I'm too young to remember that.
