| Catalan have beaten Huddersfield which leaves us top with a much bigger points difference.
Certainly makes our game against them in 2 weeks more interesting.

| It's nice to be at the top but it's certainly not the be all and end all of our season. We simply need a place in the top 4 to have a reasonable chance of success in the play offs.
We've got a tough run of fixtures now and barring total disaster in those I'm certain we'll get that top four spot. Our attacking play has added an extra dimension to an already good side.

| I don't think anyone would argue that being top is the be all and end all of anyone's season, but it's better to be there than anywhere else and it's always what we should be aiming for.

| don't forget Dragons still have a game in hand, & i can't see HFC beating them. Although when they're going to fit it in if they beat Wire next week is beyond my tiny brain.
We've got to stop the defense turning off for periods though if we're going to get through the next few weeks.
Nice to be looking down on those lesser mortals again for a change though - looking forward to that dizzy vertigo feeling kicking in.

| I find it hard not to feel a thrill of excitement when I see us sitting at the top of the league.
Okay, I know it doesn't meant anything at this stage of the season, and that it could be short-lived - especially with the programme we've got coming up. But I still remember the horrors of 2006 when I would gaze uncomprehendingly at the spectacle of a SL table with Wigan at the BOTTOM. After watching the team of the late 80s/early 90s, that was almost unreal.
If nothing else, it shows that things are pretty good at present. I wasn't blown away by our second half last night, and we've been dire in a couple of games this season, but thus far, statistically, we are better than we were under Madge. We're all a bit hesitant to proclaim this a new dawn, the way we did in 2010 - I think maybe we're just older and wiser, but barring a disasterous downturn in form this year, we've plenty of reason to be happy. We may not win anything in 2012, but the top of the table, or thereabouts, is where Wigan ought to be.

Totally agree. All we can ask for is Wigan to be in contention for silver each season, we might not always win the finals but we need to put ourselves in those positions. Keep the trophy count ticking. It would be great to win something every year even if it is just the LLS. Keep that cabinet busy!
I think this team is capable of special things, another trophy this year and I can see us carrying on for quite a few years to come, I don't think this team has reached its potential either. Imagine what we could have done to Hull KR had we got out of first gear?

| It's certainly an interesting league this year, but I doubt any team is unbeatable. We've had a really varied top 4 each week and no doubt it will continue to change as the season progresses.
Currently if you take all games in hand into account, ie Catalan beating Hull, Leeds beating Wakey.
Then 5 points cover the top 7 teams. And the top 3 would be on equal points. I just hope it carries on and we don't get a break away in the 2nd half of the season. 5 points covering the top 7 come the playoffs should make for a much better playoff period this year.

So true. This season has been so enjoyable so far with us playing some great rugby and seeing so many young, home grown players coming to the fore. For me we have looked stronger than the last couple of years under Maguire, which isnt to take anything away from Maguire as he laid the foundations and put the structures in place, and looked very well poised to have success in the next few years. It also makes the hysterical reaction from some after one game, as well as criticism of players like McIlorum and Goulding before a ball had even been kicked, all the more laughable. I actually think we have seen a changing of the guard this year with young players stepping up with the likes of Charnley overtaking Richards, Goulding overtaking Carmont, McIlorum cementing the hooker role, and any number of forwards stepping up. There are exciting times ahead thats for sure.

Too right, top of the league is the place to be, I will forever love looking at the 2011 table as it has Warrington on top, there are plenty of tables in Rothmans of us being in a boring middling position.
The table doesn't lie, considering the ups and downs so far, Shaun Wane and Wigan have done a good job to be sitting on top.

Not all true. The table does lie. The teams, players, clubs and coaches all know that the comp is not decided through who finished top of the table. They all know the situation. Would Wane really have rested players for the Widnes game if the title hung in the balence? Not a chance. It is a sad situation we are in that teams don't care about losing games in the regular season. You have to peak for the end of the season and that makes all the difference, Leeds timed it to perfection somehow last year, they would not of had the regular season they had if the champions were crowned by the top of the ladder though.

But do you really believe that Leeds did that?
That is the spin they tried to put on it afterwards, IMO.
The likes of Eddie Hemmings constantly referring to Leeds as 'the Champions' has got an unreal ring to it when you look at their current positon - hanging on by their fingertips at the bottom of the top eight.
Leeds were massively helped to their title win last year by Wigan switching off after Wembley and Warrington running out of steam (not for the first time).
To suggest that the Leeds coach, through some stroke of genius, was happy to sit at mid-table for half a season, lulling everyone else into a false sense of security, and then suddenly striking at the eleventh hour is a bit daft, I reckon - firstly because McDermot is not a genius, secondly because it would be a ludicrous thing to do.
Anyone who doesn't think that trying to win every match is the way to go is taking a big risk with their season.

I don't believe Leeds timed it at all. It is just the way it panned out. No club can afford to lose as many games as they did in the regular season as part of a plan because despite the fact people keep banging on about how unimportant the league is, it is what generates the majority of the clubs revenue and pays the players wages. If clubs were as indifferent to the league as you imply then fans would just stop going, stop buying the season tickets and may as well just turn up for the play offs.

Leeds wont get to the GF this year IMO. What they did last year was freak and as you say, due to us and wire running out of steam at the end of the year.
Remember saying after 15 minutes of the wire game after wembley our season had finished the week before - we were out on our feet and spent- we actually lost as many games in the last 5 weeks of the season than we did all year.
Lessons have been learnt last year from both us and wire and both clubs are rotating their squads well (apart from Widnes when it was overkill!), to avoid any burn out, and ensure both teams are fighting fit come the end of the season. Wire have learnt theres no point in putting 50 and 60 points on 5hyte teams only to run out of gas at the end of the season - which was why they rested players against salford this weekend as we have done in the past.
The more I think about it I cant see those errors being made, and in reality cant see much past a Wigan v Wire GF this year as both will be fighting fit come the end of the season regardless of the challenge cup. Leeds wont get a sniff, and only the Catalans and Huddersfield will have an outside chance of stoping wigan and wire from getting to OT this season IMO.
