| Who's making the trip over this year? Anyone got any advice on flights, hotels, websites to use etc?
The official packages seem a bit expensive, seems to work out cheaper the longer you stay there!

Might be the first year I've missed over there, it's getting very expensive, with our main holiday coming soon after.

| You've got various options flight wise. You can get to montpellier direct from Leeds/Bradford or Birmingham. Or you could get a flight to Nimes and the train to montpellier.
Depends how long you want to go for. For example you could go thursday to monday leeds/bradford - montpellier, flights are currently about £140. I know quite a few doing this.
Personally I'm going on the Friday, flying to Nimes then getting the Monday flight back from Montpellier to Leeds/Bradford. Flight costs for this at the time weren't too different (not sure what they are now) but obviously one less night's accom and spends.
Acoomodation wise you want something close to the comedi central square as that is where the bars/restaurants tend to be so you'll need somewhere to fall in to . I'm stopping in the Ibis this year. Stopped in citidenes last year which is about a 5-10 minute walk from the square.

| Making this the main holiday this year & I'm driving down & taking my time about it. Setting off Tuesday & getting to Perpignan on the Thursday. Then either driving over to Montpellier, or if the rumours are correct & the kick-off is moved to 3pm, going on the train.
Hotels on the way down (and back) are between £30 & £50 per night & I'm staying in the Hotel de France in the of Perpignan for 7 nights for a little over £400.
Taking fuel and ferry into account I'll have the thick end of a fortnight's holiday for around £700.
How the Dickens the official packages justify £430 for 3 days is beyond me but if you're prepared to go a bit square eyed staring at a computer for a couple of hours & can read a map & know how far you want between stops then it's worth the initial hassle.
Use a cheap hotel chain like Ibis for the motels & I checked 3 or 4 "review" sites before settling on the hotel in Perpignan.
I'm sure you could get down to Montpellier on the plane & into a cheap B&B for less, but unless you're staying in one place (or simply attending the game) you'll need to hire a car to get around & I found that that worked out just as expensive as taking mine on the ferry & driving down & back (plus not only would you be on the wrong side of the road, you're on the wrong side of the car too).

We did Liverpool to Nimes for £50 return Ryanair coach from Nimes airport to train station for €5 and train Montpellier for about €12 and we paid about £100 for digs for 2 of us .
But €6:50 a pint is a killer

The same flight a few weeks ago was well over £200.

I'm doing something similar but it's going to cost a lot more than £700! How much have you budgeted for fuel? We're reckoning it'll cost us a good £400.
We're setting off on the Thursday, stopping for a night near Paris, then making our way down to Montpellier on Firday. Then we're stopping off in Paris on Monday and Tuesday to go to Eurodisney Gonna cost about £1500 between 2 of us once everything is added up

Dont forget most of your motorways in france are also toll roads so driving each way through france will probably cost between 40-50 quid each way. Plus your ferry crossing 50 quid, and fuel (at least £350) you're probably looking at nearer 500 just in transport costs if you drive.
With the price of fuel these days, and the bargin flights that are still available, it makes driving not even an option. Which is a shame because i wouldnt mind the road trip!

We were hoping to avoid as many motorways as we can tbh. I know it'll take a bit longer, and will cost a bit more in fuel, but it'll be more interesting and hopefully cheaper compared tot he price of some of them toll roads!
There's one toll road I'm definitely heading down though
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millau_Viaduct
I'll pay €6.40 for that !

| We stayed in an Apart-Hotel in Montpelier last year for a couple of nights on the way to Perpignan. Very cheap and great value. Tram stop outside and bus to the beach round the corner. If anyone is interested I'll post the details.

| We've booked a four night trip to Montpellier by train after doing the same last year, which worked really well:
- Return train to London (2 hrs) £30
- Return Eurostar to Paris (2 hrs 20) £69
- Return train Paris-Montpellier (3 hrs 20) 60 euros
We're stopping in a 4-bed apartment in Montpellier - Citadines ApartHotel, central and right next to a tram stop, at £20 per person, per night, on Friday and Saturday, breaking the journey in Paris on the Thursday and Sunday nights to do some sightseeing, that will be about £25 per head each night.
Works out as a really good deal for the length of time we're away, and with the timing of this trip, we've got the added bonus of being able to go to the French Open tennis in Paris. The hotel fees are probably the same now as when we booked, but I'd expect the trains (especially within France) to have gone up since we booked 6 weeks ago.
