| this isnt a sarcastic remark as it may sound, but its bizarre how charnley cant break a finger, play a whole match, have an operation and be fit for the the following week and a broken thumb requires a month out.

| I was told this on Sunday night, well actually that he had broke his wrist, but hoped that it didnt turn out to be true. I wouldnt be surprised if Hughes gets the nod before Gelling as there are big doubts adount Gelling's defence and general positional play.

| Need a big strong lad in the left centre whoever plays there as Watkins looks to have put on quite a bit of muscle over the winter.

Im no expert but I would think the thumb plays a more important part in grip than one finger, or maybe its just a worse break, who knows.

Try hold a rugby ball with 3 fingers and your thumb. Now try the same again without your thumb, you'll find it incredibly difficult.

| He'd never go for it but I still think Goulding left centre, Charnley right centre with Russell on right wing is our best damage limitation.

| Having suffered the same and many fingers. Fingers don't matter that much, strap to the one next too and off you go. Thumbs on the other, err, hand are a pain and are involved much more in everything than a finger.

That's exactly what I was thinking particularly as we don't have Roberts or King available. I certainly wouldn't risk Jack Hughes, but Gelling may get a shot.

| Bad news but on the plus side it should keep Carmont that bit fresher for later in the year.
I'd go for Gelling before having a full shuffle around. He looked good in pre season and the best way to learn is by playing. He'll have an experienced player in Richards outside of him who can hopefully get him through.

| Our lack of depth in this position will be laughed at. Our 2 original 1st choice centres we thought we could go into 2012 with are out. One has left the sport. Shame we couldn't have signed a top player. Hopefully Gelling will do the job.

| I think Gelling will get his chance. He may well be a work in progress but Hughes is an even bigger work in progress at centre. Plus Gelling should deal with Watkins pace better than Hughes would.
It just gets more and more exciting ahead of Saturday's game.

But if Joel was here and Goulding was the centre cover, we'd have been fine. The club can't be blamed for Joel's hasty departure. Granted they could have held him to ransom on a long contract but for me if a player ever wants to leave Wigan, we should get rid!

That'd work for me. Also gives Goulding the benefit of playing inside an experienced Winger.

| If the injury had not happened we would be calling for the club to try someone to replace Carmont for next year. If Goulding is going to prove the doubters wrong then he can have no better incentive.

| And all the negativity on here re: Gareth Thomas and now we are so lacking at centre we will now have the most inexperienced centres in SL for a month or so. Gone from Carmont-Gleeson to Goulding-Any1else.

| I believe Ryan Shaw has returned to Warrington from his loan spell with Castleford. Approaching Warrington to see if they would loan Shaw to Wigan for a month is an option worth considering. Shaw is a great young centre who is needing some Super League experience so it would suit both clubs.

Well that made me laugh. Gareth Thomas retired because he was past it, which he was before he joined the Crusaders. The negativity was simple realism that he was err, rubbish.

| Its not been confirmed yet that Carmont is out, he does have a thumb injury but doesn't yet know if it will stop him from playing or not (from the horses mouth)

Yes he was well past his sell by date a few years ago tbh. Problem is unless Gelling is ready to play in SL then at centres were lacking and Goulding is not good enough at centre. This is not a reaction to his performance on Sunday but overall at centre he has been poor and not even SL standard at centre. He is a decent winger which he has proved. When Gleeson went we should have paid a fee for Ratchford and given him back to Salford last year on loan.
Now we are stuck with no kicking game which many have seen coming this season and no cover at centres or hooker.
Realism now is unless Amos is back at his best and thats not going happen and Gelling clicks with Richards if selected we are going to struggle this season. Not entirely a bad thing Leeds proved that last season but pressure will grow on Wane and when you look at it he has inherited a decent side with a massive hole in 2 areas atm.
