| Humberside radio have announced Clive Sullivan is one of a shortlist of 10 that can be voted for tomorrow at Wembley. Any news on who the other nine are?

By the looks of it, it has come from the Hull local press rather than an official statement by Wembley or whoever it is deciding only releasing one name prematurely.

No Jim Sullivan! Why they've put Lance Todd in there from the first winning team at Wembley when he's already commemorated through the Lance Todd Trophy at the stadium and left out Sullivan who captained and then coached numerous teams to victories as well as breaking scoring records is typical RFL.

Jim Sullivan ,if not him then Hanley who is still the most recognised name for people who are not involved with the game

| The statue should [udefinitely not [/ube of either Shaun Edwards or Jonathan Davies. If it was to be either of them most people (and the media) would end up calling it and thus thinking of it as an RU statue.
Other than that I really don't care who is chosen.

Hopefully one of the former Wigan players will be chosen.
My vote goes to Ellery.'"
IMO ellery Hanley should be the one. He's a true legend of the sport and has worldwide respect.
He's got a link with Wembley having played there many times with Wigan, GB and if I recall correctly coached GB to a win over the Aussies at Wembley.

I too am surprised Jim Sullivans name isn't in there, why the eck is Jonathon Davies' name in it? I wouldn't vote for Shaun Edwards as much as i loved him when he played for us he is really a Rugby Union man now, my vote would be Ellery Hanley.

I can just picture the ellery Hanley statue. He should have that British coal GB shirt with his stuck up at the front hairstyle.
It would look class!

IMO I would have Edwards but his Union connections slightly blemishes his record

I don't think Edwards deserves it. It's got to be Hanley for me.

| Lose your wigan bias lads. Sullivan was the first black englishman to captain GB and is spoken of massively by both sides of the Hull divide after playing for both which is no mean feat.

Wigan bias on the Wigan board... hardly a shock. My vote would be Sullivan too.

Even as a great fan of Clive Sullivan the player, and the person, I honestly don't think he would be in contention for this honour if he hadn't died a tragic early death.
His Wembley connections are no more than many players and his case seems to be built around captaining England to a 'countback' victory in the 1972 World Cup in front of less than 5000 fans in France!
I am amazed there isn't more of a push for Andy Gregory to be honoured.
Here is a truly great dual Lance Todd Trophy winner who is completely synonymous with Wembley, having never lost in nine visits - an astonishing and unprecedented statistic!
Having never been sent off on the ground and, having never taken up ranks with the sport's enemy, his case demolishes that of Edwards and Hanley!

There's no Wigan bias in saying that, fine player that Clive Sullivan was, he is not the front runner for this award.
If we take a like for like for instance, Martin Offiah and Billy Boston had better records than Sullivan did.
IMO the shortlist of 10 is too long. There are five names on there that I would discount - Sullivan, Neil and Don Fox, Todd and Davies.
That would leave the voting between Edwards, Hanley, Murphy, Offiah and Boston
I didn't see Murphy or Boston play so for me it has to be between the three Wigan players. A couple of weeks ago I was swaying towards Edwards but now I think Hanley. I think its ridiculous to say Edwards union coaching is a negative, whether he went on to be a top union coach or a taxi driver shouldn't matter, Edwards was a rugby league great.
But I think if we are only allowed to have one statue of a rugby league player then it's hard to look past Hanley. I reckon if you ask rugby league fans who was the greatest player of their time watching rugby league, then 90% of them who saw Hanley play, would choose Hanley and I bet you don't get that from any other player. Even compared to great Aussies like Johns, Fittler, Lockyer, Meninga, I don't think there has ever been a single handedly more influential player than Hanley.

| Personally I'd go for Hanley because he is the only British player I'd have no hesitation in picking an argument over including in a best 13 based on players I've seen since 1981. Having said that, the NRL champs trophy is more based round an iconic image of the game itself - although I'm not sure what message Don Fox in absolute hell says about RL!
