| After bringing back the traditional kit, and feeling like "Wigan" again, IMO the step is get rid of the "Warriors" tag, and I dont think im in the minority, its all just a bit "American" IMO, I dont see the need for it at all at any club, we are and always have been Wigan R.L.F.C. I know this topic has been discussed on countless occasions but im interested to see peoples present views on it.

Agree 100% but can't see it ever happening. Think we're far too invested in the Warriors name and brand now.
Didn't IL do a straw poll at one of the Fan's Forums a few years ago and the results we're in favour of keeping the name?

It was a 50/50 split apparently, Id like to see a proper vote done on the official site and see what the outcome is, I dont know many people that like it or anyone that calls us "Warriors"

| Also, do you people think if we got rid of the Warriors name our crowds would drop? If the answer to that question is no, then whats the point in it??

But if the crowds won't change, what's the point of getting rid of it?
I'm not a fan of it but my 8 year old and his mates like it. They're the future of this club not me.

Agree.
I prefare RLFC but my 11 yr nephew and his cousins and mates all say they're watching 'the warriors' and not Wigan. It appeals to the kids and like you say they will form the future.
It's here to stay IMO.

| But would these kids stop going if we got rid of Warriors? If not, then everyone's a winner. The older generation dont like it and I doubt the younger generation would stop going just because we are "Wigan" again.

For me it depends who the club see as the most important section of fans. If it's kids then they'll keep it, if it's say 18 and over then I would think the majority would say get rid. I don't see anybody stopping going because we dropped the Warriors tag, we would once again be the famous Wigan RLFC.

I agree, what you must remember is that when these kids grow up and learn about the history of this great club they will probably have the same opinion that most of us have now. Our club didnt become the most succesful biggest name in the game under the name Warriors, it has no attachment to everything that is great about the club, no tradition, no importance.

| But if we got rid of WARRIORS, we would not have the poster or what it stands for W.A.R.R.I.O.R.S. It was posted what it stood for but I cant be bothered looking. We would then have to have one for R.L.F.C
Right
Lets
Fu**ing
Cripple-em
Slight alteration on the last bit, but it would certainly fit in with a few members on the Saints board and their perception of our tactics

Thing is, the team and coaching staff can still use the "W.A.R.R.I.O.R" mentality thing, but the club doesn't have to be called "Warriors"

| I don't like it.
Infact I hate it. But studying marketing at Uni, I do see the benefits.
I call us 'Wigan'. To me we are 'Wigan'. I never says 'Warriors'. It is tacky and weird when you think about it.
The identity of the club is a lot more than just a name though.

To a lot of people I get the impression it does, there are a lot of traditionalists like myself that dislike it and dont associate it with the club.

Then don't use it. Like I said I'm not a fan but I, and I'm sure you, would still watch Wigan if they were called Marsh Green Marshians.
They've had a poll at a fans forum and it was split 50/50 and that would have been the hardcore traditional fans. If they opened it up they'd get more young fans voting and it would probably swing towards keeping it.
There are more important things to worry about like why there's no piping on the new shirt.
C'mon the Marshains!!!

| I think the tags work well for this sport, they certainly do in Aus anyway. My only problem over here is that some of the clubs have ditched theirs/never had one. It should be an all or nothing policy.

I think the only was to find out would be to interview 500 Wigan fans who don't go to the games and only go the big games like finals etc.
I will carry on going as long as we are still Wigan. Other people might be different. Some people might not go because we left central park, or because they don't like what super league has become.
The name change was never needed in the first place IMO. Would Manchester United suddenly become Manchester Magic? Or Liverpool FC become Liverpool Liverbirds. Infact Liverbirds would actually some relevance to Liverpool unlike Wigan and Warriors.
I wouldn't mind too much if the name fitted in with the towns culture and history.

| The name has had no adverse effects on either;
-The crowds
-The team
-The marketing
-The national identity
I call us Wigan RLFC, but my Aussie mates call us the Warriors. The argument is only valid from a personal standpoint. The list above shows why the 'Warriors' brand has worked (or not affected anything at least)

| this should be an easy solution; offere fans the chance too choose what they want on there shirt wigan rl or wigan warriors see which one sells better. Every one's happy then? But i don't see the advantage of the warriors tag if for example nissan or any other company was to pay us money to have the tag then i would.

| Obviously, I detest the fake name we are saddled with.
The club 'belongs' to the fans, regardless of temporary owners, coaches, players etc. The fans should be allowed to decide on what to many, including me, is a serious and important issue.
I would like to see a concerted effort by the current ownership to find out what the fans think about this. The straw poll at that meeting a few years ago was a poor attempt. Printed forms at the next couple of home and away matches, street canvassing, postal polling of registered fans are all ways that could be combined to produce a comprehensive and accurate verdict.
The marketing question is an interesting one. I am sure the current marketing team could find plenty of positives in a return to 'tradition' for next season. The current naff American/Australian tag is not, in fact, actually 'marketed' as a concept in any way, is it? It's just a word that starts with the same letter as Wigan, that is printed on everything the club sells, putting off the traditionalists from buying stuff. Even Max the mascot is not really 'sold' as anything in particular. He might as well be a big teddy bear or something.
Very few of the current rugby league club nicknames are actually used by fans at all, are they? I have never heard any fans at Warrington refer to the Wolves, for example, or Wakefield fans chanting for Wildcats. Arguably, it's only Leeds fans ( ) who use their American-style name to any great degree...and Bradford a bit, perhaps. Must be a Yorkshire thing, though Hudds fans still chant the name of their former ground, for some reason.
Tradition is important...let's recognise that at Wigan by at least making a proper effort at respecting it.

| Personally, I think it's an excellent marketing tool. Of the nicknames in Super League, I think it's the best one (coming from a non-Wigan point of view). It rolls off the tongue far better than something like 'Rhinos' and yet that has become synonymous with Leeds rugby league and their fans.
I'm all for tradition, but I have found that a lot of Rugby League fans would walk around with a club and drag their wife by the hair if you traced it back well enough. Sometimes you have to move forward.

| I personally don't like the Warriors tag but I wouldn't like it to be removed. The club have spent a lot on branding etc and that would be a loss.
If you don't like it you can always say Wigan RLFC or Wigan Rugby or what ever you fancy saying!
