| Errm, they didn't sing any songs. Certainly not as we know it. Perhaps the only exception was Hulls 'Old faithful'. For some unknown reason they have sung it for ages.

| This idea of "atmosphere" meaning lots of singing and chanting is relatively modern. That's not a criticism - I love joining in myself - just a statement of fact. My Dad was proud of the fact that, unlike soccer, you could pretty much tell the score in a rugby league match from outside the ground by listening to the crowd noise - massive cheer when home side scores, big cheer for the conversion or for a penalty goal, lesser cheer mixed with boos/complaints when away side scores, etc.
I actually remember some of the old fellas being sniffy about endless "mindless chanting" from soccer crowds, as opposed to the "knowledgeable rugby fans" who reacted to what they saw happening.
The modern game atmosphere is great, but there was an era when ideas were different.

| I have followed wigan since 1944. There were no sch things as songs to show support, replica shirts would never have been considered. At cupties supporters might wear a cherry and white scarf ( knitted by a loved one) or if you were in the money a rosette. HAPPY DAYS

| i remember as recently as 1980-1981 my ma having to sew a rangers badge on my wee rangers top bought as a package.. great days!
As for watching Rugby or Football in the 40's, they were working mens games and all the gents were classy and wore flatcaps and puffed on woodbines incessantly, not like today were everyone wears a replica strip.
As my old man says, too many wimmen and kids at games now eating hotdogs and drinking milkshakes, in my day we had a pish down a rolled up newspaper (supporting Clyde its a wonder he had to) ... Quite

Oh the joy's of football at Shawfield on a wet Wednesday night , standing 60 yards from the pitch and with so many floodlights around the dug track you couldn't see a bloody thing , just as well really the Jam Tarts couldn't buy a win there in my time. Now it becomes clear why you opted for Ibrox Dave . Rolled up newspapers into McEwans Export tins remenber it well .That where the saying "never accept a warm open tin of beer at a football match" originates from .
Regards , EW
