Well done to him for getting in the squad, whether he'll see as much ball out wide under the management of Johnson as he does at Northampton I doubt.

As for Hape, I'm a big believer in you have to be English to play for England.

Hape and Vainakolo for England rugger? Ha ha who next? Scott Naylor? Vagana?

and do people think he would be an England RL international by now if he had stayed at wigan/RL in general?

Depends on whether his form was more akin to his first breakthrough season rather than his second.

I'm sure though with the lack of good English full backs he would be in the England set up in RL.

Its a different kettle of fish being offered 3 times as much from another firm than playing for your boyhood team and then shooting off.

Put it one way if I played for Wigan I wouldn't sign for another team unless Wigan didn't want me anymore, even if it did me out of pocket.

Or if I had won the CC, WCC, GF, Lance Todd, Harry Sunderland, Clive Churchill, MoS and Golden Boot I might think about going to the NRL.



I don't blame Farrell for going but it grates me that Ashton could be our fullback with his defence tightened up and he could be England/GB fullback also he shot off at the first opportunity, Eastmond is next then Wheeler/Owen/Shenton you watch.

This year's six nations is going to be the poorest yet. International rugby union is slowly catching up with the club game in terms of negativity and lack of game speed.
No doubt Ashton will shine though as for Hape...

Ashton plays wing for Union and did for us early doors.
One game at Saints he scored a blinder of a try over 70 yards, inside his man and outside the full back.
Could never understand why he was continued at full back where he struggled so much when he was very obviously better as a wingman.
He went for the money but his contract was within months of runing out.
A talent like him should have been boxed off with a lucrative contract long before his contract was due to expire.
I hope he does well, he made a mistake with that shirt but 19 year olds make mistakes. Everyone knows he's from Wigan and Wigan RL. If he plays badly it'll reflect badly on Wigan if he plays well it will reflect very well on Wigan.

No way will Wigan be praised for the production of Ashton. All 70,000 toffs in attendance will be lead to believe he's a born and bread southerner who's played the game all his life and it was his dream to play for England at Twickenham.

This is NOT the reason why sooo many fans were pis*ed off with him back in 2007. It got very boring listening to some folk keep repeating the same old mantra "But you can't blame him for going for the money" NOBODY did. I aint going to say what the real reason was as im sick of having the same discussion about this back stabbing turn coat.

Ashton comes from Wigan, learnt his rugby in the town, now plays for Northampton.
No one belived Farrell came from Watford when he played for Sarries so why will they think Ashton's from N'hampton?
Hope he does well!
I'm still convinced Wigan RL should have had him on a long term contract some time before his agent was able to lure him away.
IL's learnt from it with Sam's five year deal and all the other 3 year deals for younger players which prevents them from being lured away.
