| Sky have said they play to launch a 3D TV Channel this year with 3D broadcasting looking to be the next big push for Sky and manufacturers.
[url=http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=1087056=#FF0000Sky say[/url they will launch the channel via the existing Sky+HD but to view you would also need a "3D Ready" tv.
I can't see it taking off. Bit too soon to the HD launch for me and many will have only just bought "HD ready" tv's never mind investing in another one.
I know HD has been around since 2005 but only 17% of Sky customers have upgraded to HD so far.
Also does anyone really want to watch TV wearing 3D glasses????

| There are a number of alternative technologies for 3-D.
The best (and most expensive) is still 2 years + away but will remove the need for specs.

| I'll upgrade to SkyHD when they abolish the extra £10 a month on top of your regular bill, at the minute I'll make do with Sky+.
As for Sky3D I didn't even know 3D televisions were available yet, so count me out of that one.
I've already got a mighty battle as it is with the amount of wire's coming in and out of my TV with out adding more to the mix.

17%?
I'm surprised it's that high. I've had Sky since it first came out, but still won't pay extra for boxing or football games on pay per view. It aggravates me that I pay £500 a year for SKy plus the cost of a TV license and there's still a load of e on telly. My TV works ok, so until it breaks, HD is not an option.
BTW, my kids have got big, black, flat screen TV's which are real dust magnets. Anybody know how to combat that?

| I saw the Philips' 3D tv at an electronics exhibition last year and hzve to say it was very impressive, no daft specs, realistic 3d depth of field, looked great. Given that I also saw their 1st generation 12" 'video disc' at the same exhibition over 25 years ago (the video disc was the forerunner to the cd & DVD for anyone under 25!) I'd say it's the next inevitable step forward. I'll give it 12 months max before 3d tv's are on sale and prices dropping accordingly.

| Although the 3D service will launch on Sky next year I've read that TV manufacturers like Sony are only looking at making a major push of it in 2012.

| Well he glasses are the cheapest part...
Times £50 by 4 for a family of four
Buy a new TV
Watch maybe 1 in 1000 programs that may be in 3d
And then if you change your tv for a different manufacturer the glasses wont work with the new one..
Its a mess unless there is a standard 3d glasses that work on all 3dtv's
HDTV has barely took off yet

mmm, I think Feka's big enough in real life without putting him on that!!
On a related note, I went watching Avatar in 3D last week and that was hugely impressive. The trailers included some for the Sky 3D TV service that's being launched this year and, again, it was very impressive. Having said that, it was on a cinema screen so it depends how that scales down to TV sets I suppose.

| 3d TV is the next big thing. It's inevitable. Once we get new technology and it becomes all but standardised, new technology comes and blows it out of the water
Vinyl to Cassette to CD to Mini Disc to MP3
VHS to DVD to Blu Ray
It will take about 5 years for this to be fully integrated but when it is, expect the next big thing to come along - whatever that may be.
