| The important thing is to continue marketing games like this, it shows it works. The proof is 17,000 home fans all with smiles on there faces leaving the stadium and buying shirts etc. It shows that the fans are out there but they need a reason to get down to the games.

I agree. The hard core support will always be there, but to increase the attendance average significantly, canny moves are required. We've seen that twice it the last month, and the good news is that on both occasions people who wouldn't normally come got royally entertained. With luck, they'll now come again. Of course, to get to Wembley would be the icing on the cake. There'd be massive demand, which hopefully would spill over into season ticket sales for next season. But yes, there are quite a few waverers out there, who still need to be encouraged in various ways before they start to get committed. So more of the same, please.
One thing Wigan undoubtedly HAVE got right in recent years is the reinvention of the club in the eyes of the town. This has happened despite much off-field difficulty - the generally poor form the team has shown, the lack of major-league signings, Whelan's shabby treatment of the club re. the ground, the arrival in our midst of a Premiership football team. All of these things SHOULD have combined to reduce Wigan Warriors to a second rate operation, with nobody paying much attention to them. Yet the exact opposite has happened. The marketing guys have worked miracles, and are really to be applauded.

| I saw several 'lapsed' Wigan fans down there last night. What's important is that they loved the experience. The match, the atmosphere, the whole thing. One of my mates took his kids to their first Wigan game. They loved it and they'll be back. That's the success of these things. Well done to the club

| growing the fan base is easier when you have success on the pitch .. how many would have been buying shirts after the match if we'd lost by 20 or 30 points.
that said, the efforts that the marketing department are making should be applauded.

You're right, but I think that sometimes you've got to take these risks.
We commented before the game that last night was a bit of a gamble. Pitching it as "the big one", and thereby implying that this was going to be an exciting contest of the highest quality, could have backfired badly if we'd been heavily beaten. Another 50-point drubbing would have been catastrophic, but if the opposite happened it would be a huge boost.
Hats off to the club for having to guts to take the chance. You only make big gains at this level by having the strength of your convictions.

| Rugby clubs in general see marketing as an expense and not as an investment, last night shows how a bit of investment pays off.
Considering Wigan's number of ST holders the much shouted about £10 ticket didn't cost that much to the club relatively and more than likely gave a nice pay back in total.

| IMO this is not a full success unless they come back and we can pick up our form but we are half way there. This shows that with some good performances we could be averaging this much every year with huge crowds.

| in essence on top of the great crowd the club probably made as much money if not more off the back of 10 quid tickets than they would have done for a usual leeds game!!!
Without the marketing last night would have brought a crowd of say 15-16k...which taking out the season ticket holders means you would have had 5k walk up on the night paying an average of say £15 ?(bearin in mind junior prices etc)...bringing a revenue of £75k for the game plus season ticket holders!!
Instead what we got was Season Ticket holders + approx 10k paying species.....which of that 10k say 3k were kids....= 7k x £10 + 3k x £5 = approx £85k plus season ticket revenue.
OK so you have to open more bars and employ more stewards and have the marketing costs....but lets say the marketing cost 5k, average steward works 5 hours at £6 an hour...thats £30 quid more for each steward....in the extra revenue alone you could employ another 150 or so stewards (and clearly that many arent needed for an extra 5k).
Plus extra revenue in merchandise etc...all in all I would expect the club have made between £5k-£10k more than for this usual match...plus the fact that you would expect at least 500-1000 will come back to the next game as a result....therefore surely its worth repeating.
IMO it would be worth the club coming out and saying that anyone with a 'big one' ticket stub can get into the wire game for the same price! If we can get 20 odd thousand for leeds im sure we could sell the wire game out on the back of that. The only negative I can see in doing it is that you devalue the season ticket partly.....however surely you can appease the ST holders with say some wigan merchandise or something....for me as a ST holder it wouldnt even take that.....so what i might lose a couple of quid cos they do it for the wire game and even the hull game, but id be appeased enough by seing both of those matches in front of over 20k crowds!! There should be that many on every week watching us!!
something that struck me last night was how much an extra 4-5k fans around the town makes a difference....you wouldnt expect it to be notable anywere but the ground but it was....Every pub in wigan was buzzing last night on the rugby....it was like going back ten years before we lost alot of fans moving to the JJB and like it should be! Lets repeat the excersise next season even if we need to knock a tener or so off the season ticket so not to put the ST holders out of pocket.
Last night showed there is no reason we shouldnt aim to average 17-18k next year if we got a good run together and had some good promotions.....We should be looking to sell out Saints and Wire, 20k+ for Leeds, Hull, Hull KR. 16k+ for Bradford, Cas, Wakey and Salford. and 14k+ for Quins, Catalans, Huddersfield, and Celtic without away support. IMO we could do that on the back of only 3-4 promos a year providing the team perform as they should

That's true with such a big crowd it was imperative that we got the win, a loss or hammering would have undone a lot of good work this promotion has done.

That is so true! Went up town straight after the game last night and the pubs were buzzing with people chatting about the game. Met a couple of old mates who I'd forgotten even supported Wigan, was their first game for years (some who had season tickets in the past).
It's been a while since I've heard so many cars pipping their horns driving away from Robin Park and singing outside the ground too
Well done to the club.

| I'm a ST holder and I don't care if they put that offer on again for Wire as its worth it for the atmosphere and the buzz! I'm buzzing all weekend now so its worth losing a tenner on the ST!

| What I would be really interested to know is the difference in revenue between the game on Friday and what it would have been with normal prices.
I would guess at a crowd of around 14,000 for a match against Leeds in normal circumstances. And obviously around 10,000 of that number would already have paid through season tickets.
I can't help but wonder whether the extra revenue from the other 6,000 spectators on Friday would justify repeating it more regularly.

You have a long track-record of posting uninformed rubbish, but this one takes the biscuit.
You never heard the phrase 'speculating to accumulate'. It's a tried and tested formula for business growth. Just think about it for a while.
