all i remember about him is that he was on the opposite wing to Billy B and i hear he used to tie newspapers round his forearm to deaden the blow of his swinging arm tackles...for which he was as famous for as his try scoring.

They are from Warrington nothing deliberate about it at all. 
Here was my input.
February 1960
I was then 11 years old and stood on the Douglas side at Wigan v Leeds in
the Challenge Cup 2nd round at Central Park.
Wigan were losing 9 - 11 with about a minute to go. Sullivan got the ball
about 15 yards out and a yard in from the touchline on the Douglas side
scoreboard end. Somehow he managed to get round the winger and fullback to score just inches from the corner flag (it would have gone to the video ref (today)
Fred Griffiths kicked the goal from the touchline to give Wigan a 14 - 11
victory.
Billy Boston says Mick was the hardest winger he ever played with or
against.

I left the ground a couple of minutes early and arrived home crying because Wigan had 'lost'! My mother asked me why was I crying and so I told her. She told me they'd won. The tears dried up immediately and I've never cried because of Wigan since...but I've felt like it a few times. I remember it as a 13-9 victory after being 9-8 behind but I may be wrong.
The other Sullivan moment was the 1960 Championship semi against Saints when he and Murphy were sent off. Well done, Sully! Great game. |
