It was not worse what newton did to long cos sam got up and played on and wasnt out of the game like long was. Im not condoning what the quins player did it was a cheap shot and derserves longer.

It deserved more but I think it was his first offence, plus he was sent off early in the game.

Is Sam up for going in with the knee's or have we escaped that one? As for the 3 match ban, understandable I suppose he's not a dirty player and it was probably a heat of the moment thing plus no lasting damage for Sam, might have been a different story had he broken Sam's jaw.

i think they do take the injuries caused into account when handing out punishment, which is wrong, IMO. Injuries should be irrelevant - it's the intent that counts.

However, in an 'everyday' situation you punch a man in the face and knock him down, you would get punished. You punch a man in the face and he dies, you are punished more severely, even if the intention was the same (extreme example, but used to exemplify the point).

Its difficult not to take a resulting injury into account on the same principle, unfortunately.

Doesn't the fact that it took place way after the whistle was blown, and there were no aggrevating circumstances count against him. Also, of course he pleaded guilty - how could he not? So, pleading guilty shouldn't make a difference here as if he didn't he would probably get away with it for being mentally ill.

It was only pure luck that Sam Tomkins didn't end up in Wigan Infirmary.

Had Tomkins been carried off on a stretcher it would have been double.

Didn't Howell start the Harlequins brawl in Catalan last as well?
