| Quote ="St pete"It's pretty obvious we are behind Wigan by a little way at the moment and i doubt any saints fan with common sense can't see this.
We are also losing one of our best players in James Graham and he will be huge loss no doubt.
However, wigan are losing the best thing thaw happened to the club in god knows how many Years in MM. IMO the loss of MM is far greater than the loss of James Graham at saints.
If wane does get the job, it's always going to be a step down as MM is the best coach in super league by a long way.'"
We won't have Maguire anymore granted but we'll have a guy who's worked day in day out with him for 2 years so therefore any changes will be kept to a bare minimum. We will still have Mark Bitcom as well who's the man responsible for getting these players as fit as they are now.
We dominate games via our aggression combined with our fitness and with those 2 around we won't have a problem on that score.

Not to mention we will still have pretty much all the same players as now, players like Finch, Lockers, Leuluai and maybe even Deacon will lead us round the park.

Exactly . we don't need change just more of the same . And that's why i think Wane will work .keeping changes to the bare minimum .

| Just as MM learnt his trade off Bellamy so has Wane off MM.
People seem to think madge was a coach years ago he was assistant first

Also I'm sure Maguire has even learnt a few tricks from Wane himself. He is afterall a Wiganer through and through and will have helped Maguire in plenty of ways.
Wane will take all the strong points and processes Maguire has brought in and add his own stamp.
He'll do fine.

to be fair when the last assistant to take over from a departing coach was James Lowes, you can understand why people come to this thick ape conclusion.
James Lowes was a complete cretin, he couldnt even spell clipboard never mind read from one...
Wane does look like he writes in crayon on his clipboard!
However I have no doubt he's a better coach than Lowes will ever be...but Wigan coach ....?? I would be suprised.

I wouldn't say we're dominating quite yet FTV! Wigan are back. But until we've won the WCC and the treble next season under SW I woudn't say we've been dominant.
Still, nice to know that even Saints fans are starting to think that the early 90s have returned.

I'm not 100% sure what kind of coaching track-record James Lowes had before he was made an assistant, but my understanding is that it was virtually non-existent. Wane on the other hand has been involved in coaching at Wigan - with considerable success (as in his teams have barely lost) - for 10 years before he became MM's sidekick,
So your analogy doesn't stand up in any shape or form.
I don't know whether Wane will make a good first team coach or not, but thus far I've not seen a single convincing argument from any Wire or Saints fan as to why he "probably won't". And I'm afraid you are no exception.

Shaun Wane unlike Lowes has had a very successful spell as coach of a reserve team where he helped churn out players like Sam and Joel Tomkins, Liam Farrell, Paul Prescott, Micky McIlorum and so on and on. He knows these guys and they have huge respect for him.
I'd rather look to an assistant stepping up and driving a club on like Brian Noble when he took over from Matty Elliot then a guy with no track record of coaching success like Lowes.
We should also remember Lowes took over a poor side not a champion side like Wane will take over.

Lowes had the same side that Smith won the CC with.
No doubt MM will be a loss it won't be until the big games that Wane can prove he's up to job.

Of course he did but your side was near the foot of the table whereas ours is at the very top.
Totally different situations and characters for that matter.

it was hardly meant to "stand up" as a concrete matter of fact it was to shed some light on why some fans think this way.......
the Assistant continuing the success to my mind has only happened at Bradford When Elliot followed Smith and was more succesful and Then Noble followed Elliot and was even more succesful.
other than that there is a very long list of Assistants that have taken over and not done much and or not lasted long.......
Dennis Betts assitant to Mike Greg and Andy Goodway assitant to the Great John Monie didnt exactly sparkle did they........?
I didnt Say Wane wont make a good Coach just to clarify ...I said I'd be [u "suprised"[/u if Wigan make Him first team coach,. And based on the above track record of assistants not doing so well its hardly a crazy radical notion is it?

Not really a suprise given the start under Lowes and the amount of work Smith had to put in to turn it around after Lowes had taken us to rock bottom, we missed out by 2 or 4 points I think and the CC was the sole focus August onwards.

Fair enough, but Betts basically got the job because he was an ex-player, as did Lowes and Goodway, which was the old British RL way of doing things, and which only now and then threw up a success.
The Bradford example is an interesting one, because there was clearly a 'school of coaching' in operation there as a part of Smith's legacy. The noises coming out of Wigan is that something similar is happening with Maguire. Wane has been a very keen student of Michael Maguire's for over two years. Maybe not long enough. Who knows. But this stuff about him being a "thick ape" is laughable (I'm not saying you have said that). Anyone who thinks he will get the job as some kind of sympathy vote because he's a former Wigan player is well wide of the mark. Wane has had a very long and successful coaching apprenticeship. His credentials are pretty excellent.

TBH, I'm still of the opinion that Betts never really got a chance. He was hamstrung by a massive injury crisis, at a time when our youngsters were still a year or two away from being ready for SL, yet still ended up with a better W/L record than Millward or Noble.

| Wane was also asst to Lam with the U18s and U20s.
Lam was the senior coach and Wane his asst.
Wane will have learned a lot from a quality coach like Lammy!

Won't happen but it would be great to see the lads turn out in a old style Wigan kit ala the heritage round in the NRL.
