| Quote ="giwildgo"I can't say I agree with you. It's terrible that this incident has happened and I wish Hogan and his girlfriend a speedy recovery. However it not fair to blame or punish their club or scapegoat the majority of their decent fans when the incident occurred away from the ground. Assaults unfortunately happen all the time, including in Wigan town centre pretty much every weekend, some are sports related / some aren't, with most fuelled by alcohol. Serious incidents often occur without any provocation or even reason, I should know having been victim twice in the last decade in two separate towns. Nevertheless these incidents when they occur are best left to the Police, rather than expecting the RL club to intervene or being held responsible in some way. Hopefully in the future, the Authorities will acknowledge the issue of alcohol related violence at local derbies in most sports and have a more sensible kick off time, however I'm not sure that would suit Sky's agenda. Maybe the RFL should be looking at establishing the fixture somewhere specific on the calendar, i.e. a Bank Holiday, like one of the Wigan / Saints derbies.
As far as Warrington Wolves are concerned, unfortunately the idiot minority in towns that normally attach themselves to other sports (i.e, football), don't have that option in Warrington where the RL club is the only show in town. Aside from the victims of violence in this instance, its the decent fans of the Warrington club that I feel sorry for, as I know many personally who will be disgusted with the behaviour of the idiots and the resultant impression that some Wigan fans now have of the town.'"
I agee that warrington doesn't have a football club so the idiots in warrington support the rugby club and that the majority of Wire fans are law abiding citizens.. but lets not ignore the facts that are, warrington has an hooligan element that needs to be addressed....

we've only heard one half of the story. Not condoning it mind.
After the Catalan semi-final (whoop!), some Wigan fans started on us and it kicked off because we were singing "youre not going to wembley". When you played us at home the week after, I saw same wigan fans trying to goad wire fans before the game.

I was gobsmacked seeing it. Can't say if they were real wire fans or not but most did have shirts/ team colours. They didn't care if you were male/ female or what age you were and as a (very) small woman, it was scary as hell. I'm just thankful we all made it out without anything worse happening.

| That is awful
Is there no CCTV in the area that can be used to catch these low lifes? i realise a lot of this cant be answered now but i would certainly check to see if any video footage can be seen of these incidents from the surrounding area.

Unless you can prove the same fans were in the ground, then you will be struggling unfortunately. Yes, they have the self proclaimed 'Warrington Casuals' who populate the Western end of the South Stand, which could be considered a hooligan element - but are they really any worse or greater in number than the alcohol fueled scallies that follow our club? If the incident had occurred in the ground, it would have been a different story, but the best we can hope for is that the offenders in this instance are caught and jailed, with a greater Police presence on Winwick Street in the future.

| Well that's it. I'm up for boycotting HJ from now on, would rather watch it on TV in future.
The worst incident I ever saw was back in the 80's at Wilderspool and a Wigan fan had received a dart all the way into his neck, thrown from someone within a gang of wire 'fans' who were stood near the away end goading Wiganers, looks like things have not improved.

Unless you were witnes to the event you have no idea... I must admit i didn't see it all.... but what I did see has seriously effected me... rugby league is my sport, i love the passion etc and everything about it. if this violence is the future then me, my wife and my son will be looking elsewhere in future for our entertainment! Those of you that didn't see it can all get on with your lives. For me, I think warrington should be made to address their Fan Issues!

How can you slate Wigan fans for goading Wire fans when you did exactly the same thing?
Contradicting yourself.
I don't condone any abuse or violence what so ever not matter how little or big, but how on earth can you compare your experience, where you goaded some Wigan fans, to some innocent people who have not enticed any violence and have had a woman break her nose and some lad beaten to a pulp and then have his shirt set on fire!
Get a grip man. It's not acceptable.

I didn't say it was acceptable, I don't like this sort of thing in rugby, but we've only heard one side of the story, the "victims" side. CCTV etc may hopefully prove that but until then it can't be said either way.
How is singing goading? It's called banter!! Compared to people actually shouting out for a fight and threatening opposition fans.

all I saw mate, was a number of wigan fans getting abused/assaulted by warrington fans outside the Kings head pub.. I have never witnessed such behaviour at a rugby game and hope I never will again... I do believe unless Cheshire police can address the policing in the area around the ground then this incident tonight will be the norm at wigan/witre matches..

| Hogan I'm really sorry for your experience, as a genuine Wire fan it makes me very ashamed. We seemed to have attracted a 'darker' element since before more sucessful the last couple of seasons. In honesty I think it's ben slowly building since we moved to the new stadium. It's nice and accessible from town. Anyone wanted to cause a bit of trouble only has to hang out at one of the 5 pubs within 5 minutes walking distance and are guaranteed some opposition fans to kick off on. Maybe when we were at Wilderspool they couldn't be bothered walking over Bridge Foot. Over the next few seasons we want to start taking our small daughter but to be honest, this kind of thing really puts me off. We certainly wouldn't go anywhere near Central Station after a game. It should not have to be like that. Opposition fans should not have to run a gauntlet just to get home. Any fans who travel away to watch their team should be respected, after all we're all lovers of the same game. I hope whoever has done this is caught, dealt with and banned immediately from any Warrington game ever.
Quote ="Odemwingie"Simply shocking. Wire fans are the scum of RL!'"
Grow up. A few years ago our away bus was attacked by a gang of 'fans' The Willows. That doesn't make all Salford fans scum. In any large group of people there are going to be a few morons, idiots and thugs. That goes for every team, Wigan included.

There was no singing or goading by the Wigan fans. The mouthbreathing mother .s just decided to kick off. In 21 years of watching RL Warrington is the only place I have felt threatened...

| This is very disturbing, Hogan, hope you and Yicker are ok and the same for the guy who's shirt was set on fire.
Absolutely shocking incidents, however, this really is a police issue as much (if not more) than the club. It's a funny predicament really, and why they can say that football violence has reduced. This is as it's happening away from the grounds. It can't even be said if these cowardly scumbags are actually fans or were even at the game.
This sort of dikkheddish behaviour, unfortunately, seems to be becoming more prevalent in modern society, back in the day they'd have been carted off and given a good hiding, but the power's with the scum now. Police's hands are tied, they get nothing more than a tap on the wrist and told not to do it time and time again!
Hope you're ok guys.

I'll say to you exactly what I've just said to Odemwingie: grow up. Do you really think a majority of Wire fans stand in the street waiting for a fight? Do you really think the families there with kids, couple and genuinely nice people go round starting fights. I resent you calling me scum. You don't even know me. I've never started a fight in my life, much less hit someone. I've seen Wigan fans causing trouble. Does that make you scum too? I am genuinely sorry for what's happened to Hogan, I've met him a couple of times and he seems a nice bloke, certainly doesn't deserve what's happened. But it's wrong of you to call us all scum.

I did not say all Wire fans were causing trouble, I said there was enough Wire fans to stop it happening. For example, if I saw a Wigan fan trying to start a fight with a Warrington fan I would try and stop the Wigan fan from fighting.

| Quote ="{Hogan}"I think after tonight there will be a few fans who may reply to this topic, walking away from the HJ tonight was one of the most awful experiences of my life, not just in rugby league but in my life.
Walking past the pub opposite central station (cannot remember the name) where about 20 Wigan fans, mixed sex and mix race before anyone says anything. We got marched away towards he town centre, about 10 Wire fans decided that they would make the situation heated. I foolishly decided to be peace maker between the rival fans only for one Wire fan to run at me and "stick the nut on me".
He didnt just stop at that, after head butting me he then carried on and punched my girlfriend in the face (looks like a broken nose) I have never ever been so shocked in my life, after trying to re gain my sences i pulled everyone away and attempted to head towards the train station.
The police are involved, the warrington club have admitted that they have a huge issue with fans causing problems.
This will be taken further, anyone who decided to hit a woman should expect what is coming.....I will report more after speaking to the police again in the morning.'"
As a Wire fan i am sorry for this and i am totally disgusted at it but i am not surprised i had a similar incident and I'm a warrington fan for god sake, there was a group of chavs who where desperately trying to get a reaction out of us and the stupid thing was they had wire shirts on , i think we are seeing that having the stadium so close to the town centre is not helping things, because there are plenty of people who are looking for fights but don't go the game, this people will go drinking all day and then be raring for a fight, which i don't see why they would want to.
i don't think punishing the club would do anything because there is a good chance that these people properly don't attend the game, this is a matter for the police and i for one hope they find the people who did it and serve them a correct punishment.

But think about it say there is 2 - 3 people fighting, then a group of wire fans try and stop them, am sure this will be taken out of context and then more people will join in, thus creating a much larger problem, i think the only and best way to solve it is increase the police presence down to the station and on the platforms.

| What an absoloute scumbag i hope he gets his comeuppance the dirty rat.
Having said that lets not generalise because not all Wire fans are like that, we were stood near some decent blokes (wire fans) and they were very welcoming and gracious in defeat.
I do believe though that Warrington are the worst in the league for scumbag fans.
