True, a lot of the same "fans" would have sent Pat Richards home after 3 weeks! If George Burgess is still performing poorly in two or three months then he will deserve the criticism.

Spot on. An injured player who has played no pre season games doesn’t have the best debut, so what? Judge him when he isn’t injured, judge him after 4-6months.

My favourite comment like that recently was after Clark’s debut in the Leeds friendly when somebody commented ‘he can go for me’



People aren’t happy with Burgess but I’ve not seen a suggestion of us selling him after his 17 minutes worth of action. Had that poster got their way Poor Mitch Clark would’ve been offloaded after a similar amount of game time.....in a friendly!!

He needs to be in the reserves this week if he's not injured though. I'm not writing him off but he's clearly not in shape to play SL right now

I'm not aware of anyone who has written him off but lots of people who couldn't believe how bad he was. He obviously wasn't fit but I'm not entirely sure if it was solely down to injury or a combination of injury and being unfit.

To me he looked unfit coming out to warm up. Missed a couple of easy-ish tackles before he was bounced out of the way for the Wire try. At that point I turned to my lad and said his performance reminded me of Andy Powell's first game for us.

In addition to any injury he may have to me he looks like he needs four weeks with the conditioning team and a further spell in the reserves.

Just to clarify my earlier post, I thought his performance was shocking. He clearly isn't anywhere near game ready. It's the management that we need to be critical of in this instance, there's no way he should have been picked. I see the need to pick him, first home game, Warrington at home, marquee player etc... But he clearly just wasn't ready at all, it wasn't fair on him to just throw him in.

That said, he's 27 years old, which for a prop is coming into your prime. He needs time to get fit and get some confidence back. That's it far as I'm concerned.

Remember watching Scott Quinnell debut in the A team,took a drive in couldn,t get back onside,didn,t turn out too badly.Be more concerned if warmer weather and better pitches no improvements are being seen.

Bottom line is we all agree he doesn’t look fit. Thus he needs a few games in the reserves, it’s that simple. Lam would be a fool to not do this IMO. It’s early doors in a long season and with replacements readily available is the shrewd approach to take

I really don't know why he was given his debut last week, he didn't look at all right even during the warm up, but that said just his size if Wigan can get him fit and keep him that way he will be a huge assets yes an almighty blip but one im sure he can overcome given time.

A bit further back than that was anybody as Naughton Park Widnes on a cold midweek night and Wigan unveiled Inga Tuigamala on debut? One run and a couple of tackles later he was retching behind the posts. He turned out alright in the end like....

Quite correct. I'd say as a % we've probably had more success with RU signings compared to NRL ones. For every Craig Smith & Gene Miles we had an Eddie Pettybourne and Frank Paul.

It was interesting watching last weeks Rugby AM yesterday and listening to Sam Burgess saying George looks in the best physical shape he’s been in for a couple of years. That was obviously before Thursdays game but it give me hope that it was purely down to the hip complaint. I suppose the most worrying part was him mentioning his hip has been a problem for two years now. That sounds like it’ll be an ongoing problem, which isn’t ideal when you’ve tied marquee money up in somebody for 3 years.

The fitness required for each competiton/sport being totally different

As Itchy says upthread, nobody (or virtually nobody) is'writing him off', but there's surely no dispute that he looked miles away from match fitness against Wire, and doesn't look like he should be anywhere near a first team starting 13 for a while yet.

Apples and oranges bananas and pears.Basic core fitness is the same for any athlete,my point being if his fitness is in doubt hopefully that can be sorted if it's injury related we should be worried .

Doing the same sport or discipline. I bet a shot putter can't complete too many cardio workouts compared to a sprinter for example.
