No chance should Sam get a ban. Briers, Mathers, Myler etc. have all done the same in the past.

He always has a go at the small guys like Luke Robinson, Kev Brown and Danny Orr and when they are on the floor or trying to play the ball.

For some strange reason he never seems to have a toe to toe with another prop. When the biff starts he is at the back away from trouble.

Just after Leeds'/Hall's first try, Charnley is in the backfield, and Bailey comes running in to congratulate Hall. Charley is in the way, but takes a couple of steps out of the way. Josh tries to avoid him but Bailey takes another step towards him, and puts the shoulder/elbow into him. This was clearly visible on one of the BBC replays (the view from down in the corner). Again, one of the smallest guys on the field who shows his class by his skills, being bullied by one of the biggest, who shows his "class" by his snide actions both on and off the field.

No ban required. Fine is sufficient. Hopefully he won't do it again.

The hysteria across the boards is quite ridiculous, but before Wigan fans throw too many stones, remember some of your reactions to Danny McGuire last year.

To be honest, the reaction to that incident from Leeds was even worse - and that was from Leeds officials, not just fans.

To try to cast McGuire as the victim in that incident was ludicrous. Both the Leeds captain and coach tried to imply that Wigan were somehow at fault, which was nothing more than a transparent attempt to cover that McGuire had actually been up to - cheating his team's way into the next round, and injuring himself in the process.

All through that buiness, the Wigan club maintained a very dignified silence.

to be fair what Sam did was wrong and the club and player are right to issur an apology I would now expect at the most a fine from the RFL and lots of stick for Sam when he goes back to Leeds (no change there)

He joins a long list of other players who've finally cracked under the stress of a big match and constant, abusive barracking from certainly sections of the crowd (though not too many who've experienced it from their own fans during an international, I must admit - I don't think Leeds fans should be totally surprised that they were singled out).

However he was stupid, and it was the right thing for the club and the player to issue an apology.

Wigan fans have booed Long and McGuire in the VERY recent past in internationals, so not sure why all of a sudden it's deemed a heinous crime.

Longy was booed by everyone for bringing the game into disrepute in a big way, not because he was a talent. I don't recall McGuire being booed by any England fans in the international arena. I remember him being booed by Wigan fans for cheating them out of a Grand Final place last year. That is all. It was not during an international.

As for it being a heinous crime ... you're right, it isn't. But it still explains why players respond the way they do. King, Eastmond and Briers have all done similar in the last couple of years. You need to be a saint to not respond to constant touchline abuse.

What he did was quite rightly wrong, which is why to set an example, I've downloaded it as my desk top to remind me how wrong it was for him to react in the way he did to those Wonderful Articulate Nice Kind Enthusiatic Really Sensible yorkshire men.

You probably weren't at the DW in October 2009 then? McGuire was booed every time he touched the ball. A year before the "Trip-gate" incident.

But, like you, I can't feel excited about players giving a bit back to the fans. They shouldn't, since they're paid to be there, but they do. It gets a verdict of "meh" from me.

In fairness, Tomkins gets more attention because he's a talent, but I think if he were being honest he would admit that he's fond of the odd wind-up. Personally I think it's quite funny, but I would imagine the booing owes much of it's existence to that side of the lad's character. As I'm sure you know really.

far to many people are calling for his head and a ban simply because it was on the bbc infront of more fans bla bla bla..... a high tackle or a dirty shot wouldnt be punished more severly simply because it was infront of more fans so why should this? The RFL should do nothing but be consistent, which if similar incidents are anything to go by would mean a slap on the wrist and a fine, which no one can have any argument with.

If like us you watched Sam week in and week out, you would be as angry as us if you saw all the high shots and late tackles he takes...

I don't remember that, but I'm not saying it didn't happen. Maybe we're talking about players getting booed because they were simply being played off the park? That wouldn't surprise me, given the good hidings the Aussies have recently given our national sides, and if that's what we're referring to, that also is a different thing. However, if McGuire was being singled out when so many others around him were crap as well, it was bang out of order.

I agree that this is not the major incident it's being made out to be. Players are only human and feel immense pressure in big games, etc.

But Sam was stupid to react the way he did. It's good to see him get fined by the club. If the RFL also want to impose a penalty, then fair enough - I just hope it's consistent with those other case's we've mentioned.
