| R.I.P Maurice. I understand that Wigan RL existed before him but for me at 37 years old it didn't and he made Wigan RL and without him wouldn't have nowhere near as many fans in my age group. His front running vision has created a legacy that got thousands on board and he engaged with the fans too. Only the best was good enough.. He will be very sadly missed.
He needs a statue somewhere in the town. He put Wigan on the map.

I’m 38 mate and you’re bob on. Wigan Rugby League club has and continues to play a huge part in my life but had it not been for him I’m not sure I would be half as interested. I was mesmerised as a kid watching all the stars we had and he made it happen. One huge memory stands out as a 11/12 year old kid at Central Park that always caught my imagination and it wasn’t even in the 80 minutes! It was Henry Paul and Inga in the warm up throwing 40/50 yard passes to each other, some normal passes, some one handed, some flick passes out the back. I’d stand there and it felt like you were watching magicians.
God bless Maurice and rest in peace.

I remember those passes as well! Bit older than 11 or 12 at the time though...

Am a bit older but the sentiment is the same,he did so much for Wigan Rugby will forever be in his debt.
Kris did a fantastic eulogy befitting a man of Maurices stature.

| Along with Rads emotional eulogy seeing the Challenge Cup dressed in Cherry and White ribbons on the alter with Maurice's framed picture was very moving.
He would have loved that.

He was a "bit of lad" owd Morris.
I met him a few times and he was always a gentleman with me but I know other people who dealt with him on a business footing and one of them in particular is quite scathing in his opinion of him.
I thought KR pitched it perfectly. A great guy but like the rest us humans he had his frailties.
I was unaware of his Irish background but it probably partially explained his love of horse racing.

Jim Mills on twitter wasn't too complimentary of Maurice upon news of his death. Wasn't really the time for it, he should have kept his feelings to himself and said nowt.

I know Mills had issues re the Offiah deal, but didn't see anything from him on Twitter recently, maybe I missed it?
I do know I've never watched a funeral on Facebook before, and was then so moved. I was lucky enough to meet Maurice in the depths of our bad days, and found him perfectly approachable and a decent bloke.
Very telling that at Tottenham everyone applauded his passing. Tears in my eyes for sure.

Some of the replies to that are cringeworthy.
Why didn't Keighley just get promoted the following season if they were SL ready? I don't recall their squad being torn apart like would happen in football. More people looking to blame everyone else (Well, Wigan) for their own clubs failings.

| I notice Jim didn't mention Widnes living way beyond their means at the time ... when he was CEO, I think.
Why else did they sell Offiah and Tait?
Also, as a player he was one of the most brutal I've ever had the misfortune to watch. I remember an unprovoked, very violent attack on Bill Ashurst, which was way more than just a 'bit of biff'. It put Sash out of the game for the next few weeks, and he was one of the few decent players Wigan had at the time.
Big Jim can do one.

That was my reply to him and others on the thread
Gaslighting to avoid the fact they were millions in debt and had to sell not just the players you mentioned. But Davies, eyres and a whole host more
On him as an administrator, can anyone name an achievement of his?
As a player, we'll his game was certainly built around the thuggery and violence of the 70s
As a man, I can tell you for fact he revelled in telling tales of Stamping on another players head amongst others.

I was thinking of the Ashurst last night.
I remember it really well as the attack took place right in front of my mates and myself.
For an "hard knock" Mills took Ashurst from behind and literally beat the shoite out of him for no reason other than he saw an opportunity to make a cheap attack.
I'm very much old school so a bit of rough stuff I saw it as part of the game but the attack by Mills was total out and out a criminal offence if it had occurred off the pitch.
I didn't rate Mills as a player and I always thought of him as just a thug who should have been banned for life after the Greengrass incident which was as cowardly act as you will ever see.

| I'd actually rate that incident worse than Ben Flower. With Flower at least there had been a coming together between each player leading up to punch #2.
With Mills the NZ player had done nothing to offend other than score a try, for which he suffered 12 stitches.
Should have been jailed.

My dad and I were firmly of the opinion it was a targetted attack, designed purely to put Wigan's main playmaker out of action very early in the match. Bill was in a rich vein of form at the time, and Widnes clearly decided it was worth seeing Mills get his marching orders so long as Wigan's main danger man was put in hospital. Disgusting and pathetic.
