| Quote ="100% Warrior"I'm truly staggered. Your condoning the use of drugs in sport?
Let me give you some examples of what drugs in sport can do, from a "entertainment sport" riddled with steroid abuse:
Mike Von Erich - 23
Louie Spiccoli - 27
Art Barr - 28
Gino Hernandez - 29
Jay Youngblood - 30
Rick McGraw - 30
Joey Marella - 30
Ed Gatner - 31
Buzz Sawyer - 32
Crash Holly - 32
Kerry Von Erich - 33
D.J. Peterson - 33
Eddie Gilbert - 33
The Renegade - 33
Chris Candido - 33
Test - 33
Adrian Adonis - 34
Gary Albright - 34
Bobby Duncum Jr. - 34
Owen Hart - 34
Yokozuna - 34
Big Dick Dudley - 34
Brian Pillman - 35
Marianna Komlos - 35
Umaga - 36
Pitbull #2 - 36
The Wall/Malice - 36
Emory Hale - 36
Leroy Brown - 38
Mark Curtis - 38
Eddie Guerrero - 38
John Kronus - 38
Davey Boy Smith - 39
Johnny Grunge - 39
Chris Kanyon - 40
Vivian Vachon - 40
Jeep Swenson - 40
Brady Boone - 40
Terry Gordy - 40
Bertha Faye - 40
Billy Joe Travis - 40
Chris Benoit - 40
The scary thing is, that's not even half the list. For those who do not know, these are all deceased former WWF/WWE wrestlers. All died from complications from steroid abuse. The name in bold is The British Bulldog aKa Davey Boy Smith, a Wiganer from Golborne.
I take your point but this list is highly inaccurate and appaers to be just a list of early deaths in pro wrestling. Marella died in a car crash. Owen Hart has already been pointed out. The Renegade and Kerry Von Erich committed suicide. The role of steroids in the deaths of many of the others, while probable is far from conclusively proven. Having said that, I would certainly not advocate their free use in any field, at least until more research is done and we can state categorically what level of risk is involved.
Newton was a good player, but Cunningham was definitely better, as was Lowes. As for Robbie McCormack, he was well above Newton's class.

Owen Heart died from falling off a gantry, Benoit commited suicide and I'm pretty sure Yokozuna didn't need to use steroids.

Yokozuna used lard if I remember correctly. Also a lot of the wrestlers were taking loads of other drugs to keep them going. They would be doing 5/6/7 shows a week and were loaded up on cocaine, pain killers & steroids.

They were PROPER sportsman as you so elegantly put it before they entered the sports entertainment business. Wrestling is an Olympic recognised sport so back off that high horse of yours.
The point I was attempting to make was that if we allowed steroids in our game that list would be compiled of RUGBY LEAGUE SPORTSMEN.

Benoit committed suicide after steroid abuse over the years led to "roid-rage" where he murdered his family with his signature move. Yokozuna, it depends where you read the information, some say he died because of heart failure due to steroids, other's argue differently. Either way in all these deaths, when it came to the autopsy/post mortem, steroids where found in all their blood streams. Whether they directly are to blame for the deaths remains to be seen and cannot be conclusively proved or dis-proved. What can be certain is that in most of the list compiled (except Owen Hart, it would of taken a miracle to survive that) steroids played a part.
In all honesty I didn't compile the list myself, I obtained it from a website, but the evidence for keeping steroids illegal is there for all to see. I don't know whether the priestman has just lost his head or what but I go to a gym, I see the effects steroids have physically and mentally. Physically, on the outside at least they look fantastic and are all too tempting for those who want to be big now, on the inside the strain being placed on the joints and heart will eventually become all too much.
With Chris Benoit, his mental state had been severely affected by the death of his closest friend Eddie Guerero (sp?), who again died because of steroids, he heavily abused steroids, which eventually made him snap and do what he did. Do we really want that not just in RL but in any sport? Mourning another sportsman every week?

| Quote ="ABP'"The same could be said about Kelvin Skerrett who still to this day holds huge affections from the Wigan faithful. We all like to see abit of biff and the characters that go with it.
Being niggly, dirty and hard players is how Newton and Skerrett played the game from grassroots. It's their Rugby League personality and way of life which lead them both to be reasonable successful players both at club level and internationally, I wouldn't have them any other way (apart from drug taking!).'"
There is a huge difference between Newton and Skerrett and that is Skerrett never let the opposition wind him up to the extent it cost us in a match. He was quite calculating in his thuggery. Newton on the other hand was often targeted by opposing teams because they knew they could wind him up. If it didn't result in him lamping someone he often lost the plot and had to be subbed before he blew a gasket.
Quote I remember when we played Halifax in the early 2000's at the JJB. Big Paul Davidson bullying one of one younger players before Newton stepped in and peppered him with punches whilst driving him back around 30 yards to his try line. After getting sin-binned he recieved a standing ovation. Same with famous brawl at Knowsley Road in 2004, Wilkin being typically niggly in the tackle before Newton giving him a good pasting....I wouldn't swap those moments for the world regardless of the outcome.'"
And Skerrett doing his Super-Kel flying dive into a brawl was an outstanding bit of entertainment but I don't recall him ever getting so wound up in a crucial game he was a liability and IMO Newton wore his heart on his sleeve so much he did and he would let the occasion get the better of him.

Skerrett didn't let the opposition wind him up? Are you being serious? He was notorious for it.
In regards to never letting the occaision get the better of either of them, have you seen the 1994 Challenge Cup game against Saints on You Tube? Watch it and you'll change your mind.

But at least Kelvin kept a clean slate off the park, as far as I'm aware.
Terry was dogged by controversy through most of his career. Weren't we expecting him to be sent to prison at one point for an assault?
I'd have a fully powered, fully fit Terry Newton in my side any day, but I don't think he should be idolised. He caused us quite a bit of bother.

Drugs are the cancer of soceity, most crime commited can be traced back to drugs. Any form of illegal drug use should result in a life time ban if we are to get rid of the menace once and for all.

it is(sorry for sticking my nose in here) but the majority of it is a very good example, i'm currently reading bret hart's autobiography and he's obviously telling at lot about the WWF performers from the late 80's onwards and being 'cut' and on the pills and how easy it was juice up, which looking back you'd have to be an idiot not to have realised(cept if your 10 years old).
Andrew 'Test' Martin in that list is a good example, he got canned from the wwe in 2003(4) with a neck injury whilst working a match, 2/3 years later he came back to the company and you couldn't recognise him, he was always a big bloke but now he was literally a walking wall of muscle, it was almost painful to look at him, another 18 later he was dead.
think it was yokozuna's weight that killed him, he was at about 700 lbs at one point.
And there's not even the deceased, some may remember lex luger, he was a hardcore roid user, had a stroke a few years ago.

| I think it'd be a bit foolish for this discussion to go down the avenue of assuming steroids are the single killer.
In the sports entertainment form of wrestling there is a terrible culture of combining steroid abuse with a reliance on pain killers. A lot of wrestlers are falling into this trap due to the pressures of wanting to be a success and meeting the demands hectic schedules place on their body.
Ultimately this places too much stress on the heart, and can have shocking consequences.
Although these pressures do not exist in RL there is certainly an indication that similar practices exist.

Yes, but that's a civil argument, not a sporting one, which is why I was careful to qualify my statement with "in terms of relevance to RL" and "by the sporting authorities".
I wouldn't have had a problem with separate civil punishment for Hock, for example, but that's a matter for the CPS, not the RFL.
You can't just single out sportsmen for a lifetime ban for drugs, it would have to be everyone.

Very true, although, you could say in a weird sort of way that the owen hart tradgedy was kind of related to this issue, obviously owen was a true wrestler, not a vince mcmahon 'hoss' style monster. Because that sort of thing got vince's dick hard, owen had to revert to his blue blazer gimmick to get tv time and ahead in the business, which as we know, sadly led to his death.
