It's almost as if they want nothing more than to keep trundling along, being average.
But then we saw that when Wigan were top dogs. The response was not to try and challenge them, but to endlessly complain and then introduce a salary cap to dumb that soaring standard down.

| Pretty sure that Warrington had stated Sandow fitted under the normal rules of the cap, rather than having to use the Marquee rule.
Don't forget, he was trying to revive his career which stalled after leaving Souths. He didn't arrive as a big money transfer as a current NRL 'superstar'. Possibly also part of the reason he quit early, as the exchange rate may have made it not worthwhile to be in the UK anymore if not on a Marquee-level salary. I'm sure Warrington won't have wanted to increase his pay packet with his increasingly problematic behaviour off the field, irrespective of what he was producing on the field...

| Tony Smith kind of confirmed Sandow was marquee on the radio.
I'm fairly sure clubs won't divulge who their marquee player is to not disrupt other players (despite TS pretty much doing it), may even be a specific rule.

| Quote ="Grimmy"It's frightening really that clubs aren't using the marquee player rule, says to me that perhaps the money isn't actually there to raise the cap. Why haven't Saints, for example, gone to the NRL with an open cheque book and brought in a superstar halfback? Can't blame the RFL for that.'"
Because we can't afford them. Simple as that. Top nrl players earn massive money and we can't afford it just like you or any other club can't afford top NRL players and that's why the is none in super league.

| I dont think he meant you should be going out and signing Cherry-Evans. Think he was wondering why you havent a marquee player like the likes of Tomkins, Sandow and Segeyaro. There would be plenty willing to come over. I completely understand the reasons not to have a marquee player though as i previously stated.

Does the marquee player have to be declared on a season by season basis? For instance is Tomkins now the marquee player for the rest of his contract at Wigan.

| It just doesn't make sense for any club not to use the marquee rule if they have a homegrown player earning more than £100K per year, or an overseas player earning more than £150K per year.
You may as well declare them and have the difference available if another squad player becomes available (FPN last year) Just to put some figures to make it clearer. Suppose you have a local player on £200K per year and you declare him than you have an extra £100K available on your salary cap

But if you're not spending up to the full cap (and by implication, have no intention of doing so) then why bother?

Well it's not... clubs get either 1.1m or 1.3m from sky- cap is 1.8m.
Wakey (for example) as a business just doesn't have enough fans to make the extra to spend on wages.

The new TV deal covers all the cap.

Under the terms of the new contract the annual payment to Super League clubs will rise to £1,825,000 per club, which will just about cover the salary cap.

Not according to Michael Carter - just looked back through his tweets and he's saying we get 1.65m central funding. Higher than I thought, but not all covered tbh.

Central funding is 1.85mil for all teams, if he chooses to put just 1.65 into the first team then that upto him. Bear in mind there are sponsorships, merchandise and gate receipts and other outside sources to fund the running for the rest of the club.

With the greatest respect, you'll forgive me if I choose to take Carter at his word, being actually responsible for dealing with the central funding coming into a SL club. He clearly says its only 1.65m that he receives.
Wakey is no longer losing money, so if we were getting 1.85, we'd be spending to cap.

Sky have stated what they will be giving, if they dont are they not in breach of the contract?...somehow I feel that they would be so stupid.

Why would Carter say we only get £1.65m on a public forum if it weren't true?
Honestly, I don't know the reasons why but Carter is an honest bloke (almost to a fault) and has nothing to gain by saying that if it's not true.
Like I say, the only thing that would make sense is if the rest is mandated by the RFL to go to specific purposes.

You're right, there's far too many 62-0 type scorelines popping up in SL atm.
